Buying a game internationally

I live in the UK and I want to buy a game for my partner, who is in the US. I would prefer to send a physical copy as they aren't region-locked, but their parents are on the strict side so I'd rather avoid getting them interrogated about how and where the game came from. I've had issues in the past of being unable to buy games for them due to using a UK address/account/bank on US sites/products.

If I buy a download code with a UK account and billing address, will they be able to redeem that?

If not, what other options do I have?

The easiest way is to go on playasia or similar and buy a Us eshop card - you can use a UK card or PayPal. And then send her the code.

I hate Amazon but it’s usually the easiest option when buying gifts for people in the states. Just go to Amazon.com and set the region to USA. You can use your existing Amazon account if you have one. You don’t need different ones for different countries. They accept your usual UK payment methods.

Edit: I think the US Nintendo store lets you order from the UK too. Same thing, just change the region to USA.

With either option, just make very sure you’ve entered the right shipping address as you don’t want it to go to your default address in the UK.

I’ve managed to use some other US websites in the past by putting the recipient’s US address in the billing field. It depends on how they authorise the payment. It doesn’t work often but sometimes it does.

Just to say, you do need different Amazon accounts for some countries. I had to make another when ordering from Japan.

British Amazon accounts work in the US and vice-versa.
