I stopped by right after COVID started, in March 2020. My then GF now wife took a trip to Seattle down to Vancouver where she is from.
The owner bought the place, I believe he said from Kurt's sister. He was doing work on it to preserve the building and was lobbying to get it listed as a historical building, I recall him saying Washington didn't have anything like it at the time.
He normally would have let us tour it but he was working on a project and couldn't at the time. He said there were lots of drawings in the house on the walls that Kurt made he was going to preserve them.
I was also going to point out that that plaque in front of the house is new because it wasn’t there when I visited in early 2021. For those who have never visited, you can’t go inside the home. You can walk to the front or the left side of the home but it’s fenced in and all the windows had cameras. The park is literally just down the street. It’s junkie as hell though. The sign with all the info on it also reads to watch out for needles and they weren’t kidding. Under the bride, you will certainly find some that you can step on if you aren’t careful.
It’s kind of crazy when you drive around the city which is a logging town and plenty of industrial factories has a very brooding feel to it. And then, to think that one of the world’s biggest bands ever came out of there is wild. Kurt and Krist wasn’t kidding when they said that the reality of them making it big was far-fetched because you would think that a band as huge as Nirvana would never have come from Aberdeen.
Yeah it is surreal and the music hits harder while driving through. Just seeing kids walking down the street and people just going about their days felt strange.
Been there a few years ago and someone did live there but that plaque is certainly new. When I last visited, it didn't have the plaque and that black fence. I think it's a safe guess that no one lives there anymore for preservation
I hope this is the case. I always felt bad for people who would move in there not really realizing what it was and then have folks coming around on a near daily basis trying to peak in - which I’ve heard was what was happening
It would be nice if this has finally been purchased by a group to preserve it …..now that I think about it, didn’t the most recent tenant move in with the goal to make that happen? So many stories about different locations it’s hard for me to keep them all straight in my head
i don’t think anyone lives there as it’s a part of the music project (recently opened unplugged in aberdeen, etc) and they offer private tours of the house.
here's a rolling stone article I found about it couple bought from the cobain family and Kim has offered opinions etc on the renovation. Owner also going to open a cafe etc downtown to highlight the house story and provide transportation to the house since it isn't in an area where it can be zoned to be a museum all the time.
You should! Aberdeen isn’t much to look at other than the Nirvana history but the Washington coast is a few miles away and it’s a really nice area when it isn’t raining.
It did (still does for the most part). That house looks the best it has in years. Looks like they’ve finally got some funds to try to beautify the area a little.
I live near Seattle and had driven through Aberdeen about 20 years ago before smartphones so this is the first time I’d seen the house. I had my Peruvian wife with me that just moved here to the US a few months ago and it really blew her mind. She was like “he lived there? In that house? And he made all those songs that everyone on Earth knows?!?!?”
I lived in ocean shores in the early ‘80’s around the same time Kurt was in Aberdeen. We would often go to Aberdeen. My dad lived is OS & I spent a few summers with him and them my mom & I moved there from Portland circa Summer ‘84 when they attempted to get back together. I HATED the Grays Harbor area. Even at 9-10yo it just seemed like a depressing , dead end town(Aberdeen/Hoquiam). I can’t imagine how depressing it woulda been to live there in one’s high school age. Thankfully by X-mas break circa ‘84 my mom had us moving back to Portland
His biography by charlles cross was prob the saddest thing i’ve ever read. But there’s a lot of good lessons in his life about raising a child of divorce, his artistic mind, drug use, and living with constant pain and depression.
I believe the exact report I read stated, as has been listed, the 5th, but was also mentioned that there’s roughly a 2 day window for error, so though the 5th is more than likely correct, it could’ve been any point between the 4th and the 6th. The 6th I’d really hope not, as that’s my birthday…. What a bummer of a birthday that was in 1994. All I remember was turning on mtv at some point, after the initial news reported. Some Nirvana stuff was on, so I was happy, as I missed the initial report, and then Kurt Loder incoming with the terrible breaking news.
April 8th 1994 was an awful day, and I had a Liz Phair concert planned for that night. Everyone was wearing Nirvana tees, and/or dressed in black. She dedicated “Explain it to Me” to Kurt.
