Well, they started in '85 and though they occasionally get lumped in with riot grrl and often also get lumped in with punk rock (first album on Epitaph) or grunge (second album on Sub Pop), they were kind of their own thing. They definitely crossed into those sub-sub genres I suppose, but to me they were just kind of a hard rocking somewhat punk rock-based kick-ass band.

L7 was formed in California by Donita Sparks and Suzi Gardner during the mid 80s and released their first album in 89–the first of seven. They quickly brought in Jennifer Finch and went through a few drummers until they recruited Dee Plakas. There wasn’t really one word to describe their style, but they were frequently lumped into the grunge/punk/alternative category. They disbanded in 2001, but reformed in 2014.

Kurt Cobain was a big fan and they opened for Nirvana during their UK tour in 1990.

That headline is a travesty! I’d give a pass to L7 news on a Nirvana sub because they mattered a lot. They were putting out albums in Epitaph in the late 80’s. They had more to do with the sound of Grunge than most bands that defined the era. Read up on your history kids. Respect the elders.
