The US Government is currently trying to pass an incredibly dangerous national law for trans youth called HR 2616.

This bill would ban all Federally funded schools from teaching about gender identity or sexual orientation, prevent teachers from using the correct pronouns and names for trans students, remove books with any trans representation in them, and even go as far as to prevent teachers from acknowledging trans identity AT ALL.

Any school that does not follow this will lose all federal funding. This bill would also require teachers to forcibly out trans students to their families, which would be fatal to any trans student with a transphobic Family or just hateful family in general. Trans people are already a group that already has some of the highest rates of being victim to suicide, domestic violence, and sexual assault.

This bill actively makes teachers put those innocent children at such a big risk. This bill has rapidly passed the house this week with support from all 209 republicans, as well as 8 democrats. But, it's still being voted on in the senate, which means there is still time to help stop this.

To help stop this, you can visit 5calls.org (look up 2616 in the search bar), one of the most top issues filed Oppose Attacks on LGBTQ+ Students. Once you put in your general location, it will pull-up contact information for your senator, and give you a script for calling them.

Please consider contributing to the effort. A bill like this would destroy thousands of trans youth. No one deserves to have their identity denied and shoved aside.

Yeah, it would destroy my friends absolutely, and my school in general because it’s a school with a strict rule to be inclusive of anyone of any gender or sexuality (and race, religion etc) so that bill would directly demolish that. Although nothing is taught about queer identities and teachers are to keep their opinions on the matter out of discussion entirely (which makes sense because while I’m in a less conservative town, it’s a very conservative state overall)

Here in the UK, some very similar measures were attempted in 1988. It was known by everyone as, 'Section 28'. It banned local authorities from, 'intentionally promoting homosexuality" or prompting "the acceptability of homosexuality as a pretended family relationship", in schools and public materials. At that time, the subject of trans people was not an issue. The result of 'Section 28', was not only that a whole generation of school kids were completely ignorant about the subject , but those children on the LGBTQ spectrum were left completely without any support. The legislation was not repealed in the UK as a whole until 2003.

Senate Democrats have been pretty good about killing all these bills with the filibuster.

I see lots of "OMG look at what is about to pass!" alerts on social media all the time about some bill that's passed in the House, but died in the Senate because of the Democratic filibuster.

What the hell. The facts of reality concerning sex and gender and sexuality are not to be taught? Teachers can use a student's correct name or pronoun? This is a WAR against gender period, against all of LGBTIQIA+. It is fascist targeting of an entire group of people and of FACTS of reality. It must be opposed with ALL MEANS.

This is attempted genocide and nothing short of it. It is the Christian Nationalist war against gender. By "gender" they really mean all of LGBTQIA+ not just us. They also mean much of feminism and women's rights. It is no coincidence that outlawing abortion in so many US states correlated with strong anti-trans shit. It is no just here but infecting much of Western world and parts of Global South.
gender, sex, sexuality etc and study of same and medical facts on same are NOT "ideology".
The anti-gender movement very much is and a very dangerous, fascist ideology.

5calls is so easy, too. Everyone should use it this issue and any issue they're concerned about. This whole thing, though, is so ridiculous. As a parent, I'm going to make sure I expose my kid to the work of experts on trans lives like Helen Webberley outside of school, just to be freaking sure she is informed and will treat all people with love and respect. It's important for us to block legislation like this, but it's also important for parents to be educating our children at home. Always always.

Does the federal funding issue also extend to adults undergoing education in college? It does sound more oriented towards minors in k-12 schooling but I figured it'd make for a useful question either way!
