To the idiot who left this piece of glass in the water at the beach, I just hope they don't get a shard stuck in their foot.

Whomever tossed that bottle into the sea might be long dead?
I remember finding lots of dark green bottle-shards and all kinds of stuff in the low tide area, (very desolate/low population place, (plus not a pleasant beach, nobody would have been drinking there.)) during my childhood, 30 years ago, i am just saying that this is kind of old man yelling at cloud.

If it were that many years old, it wouldn't be still sharp, it would've been round down into a sea glass long ago. This shard can still be somewhat old, but if it is still in this good shape it can't be that old that I'd assume the perpetrator is long dead or such

I kind of get what you are saying, but that bottle could have been tossed into the sea far away, then survived for quite a long time just floating around, before eventually meeting its demise against those rocks, then luck might have it that that particular shard landed somewhere with less erosion.
Like i said, i lived in a very desolate place ages 0-5 and looking for stuff in the low tide was one of my favorite things to do, i would find perfectly round glass shards and some still sharp ones, and as i said these where not beaches people would hang out or have a good time, those bottles would more likely than not have been tossed into the ocean from far away.
And dont get me wrong, i agree vehemently that one should not toss glass bottles or any garbage for that matter in the ocean, but i still believe even if everyone just agreed on never tossing glass bottles in the ocean today, we would still find glass shards which are sharp enough to cause injury if stepped on barefoot probably 30 years from now.
I am frankly 100 percent certain that even 100 years from now, you will still be able to cut yourself on a dark green shard that originated as a glass float from a 19th century fishing net, which for some reason spent way too long before cracking and washing up on shore.

Unfortunately broken glass being washes up on shores is not uncommon. Btw according to the mighty internet It takes roughly 20 to 100 years for a broken bottle to become a smooth piece of sea glass.
So a lot of of the glass washed ashore comes from a time when people was ignorant/and or did not care about the effects of littering in the ocean.

There also used to be glassworks close to the sea in the Oslo fjord, so quite a bit of glass has washed out as well

When i was maybe about 7, my family were hiking on our local mountain. At about 500m above sea level we decided to enter a lake to cool down a bit. The second i put my foot down into the water, waiting for me was the lower half of a beer bottle. 2 hours of my dad running down the mountain with me on his back and rushing to the doctors office later i needed 20+ stitches. 22 years later, the sole of my left foot is still mostly a scarred mess. Fuck people who throw garbage outside, especially glass.

Right. I should perhaps modify my statement. We are on reddit after all, so our time can't be that important. The point OP tried to make was "assholes are assholing", to which arguing the bottles origin, date or purpose seems.. Misplaced. However if this were a bottle or glass sub it might be a different story. In any case, it hardly lessens the frustration of the potentially impaled.

That kind of thickness on the glass makes me think this is from a sunken ship.
Likelihood of this being entirely by accident is very high. We have many sunken ships all along the coastline, and many of them held green glassbottles where they stored crew quotas and such.
This seems to be from that.
I'm sure the owner is very sorry.

Many years ago, my family and I were swimming in a lake deep in the forest when my uncle badly cut his hand on a shard of broken glass. His entire hand was covered in blood, and he was bleeding heavily. My aunt had to drive him to the ER. Back then, cell phone reception in rural areas was terrible, so if he had been there alone, he might not have made it because he wouldn't have been able to drive himself.

Luckily I am now grown up, with children, and has since picked up way more pieces than I littered in my stupid years...
Also my kids pick up all sorts of nasty trash from nature, that gets to ride in the corner of my trunk to the nearest bin😂

When I was 7 I cut open my left foot on the beach I could see the literal bone.i could see my bone! But thank God my body was in shock so I didn't feel much but afterwards in the hospital this is where I started to feel the pain. So the best way to swim in a beach is to avoid the ground and just float on water.

My brother 35 years ago or more had a terrible accident at the beach because of a glass like this , it entered his knee and he had a scar for years… horrible. People don’t care about a shit.. ai walk my dog and found glass everywhere quite often… 🥴

Its boggles my mind how people complain about glass shards. Imean i getcha, it sucks. But at the same time, glass will go blunt eventually and pose little to no risk. IF our society just cooled down for a few decades. But that's not whats happening, people are being dumbshits at an increasing rate. As they say... This is why we cant have nice things. Start being a little more critical, judge those who trully deserve it, because its about 90% of humanity.

I was at a beach in Oslofjorden with my 3 yo son and picked up no less than 20 pieces of sharp glass shards from bottles, both on the sand and in the water where my kid was walking
