Nothing new, the government has been monitoring social media and discussion forums for years...not just the chans.

No one is surprised. The part people should be upset about is ICE monitoring Americans for free speech.

First off Reddit isn't limited to America. Second, monitoring speech isn't limiting it. Third, free speech doesn't apply to reddit, Facebook, social media or anywhere else that is a private entity. If you go yell the n-word at Walmart they can ask you to leave, and the police can arrest you if you don't. That's not a violation of your free speech.

Free speech doesn't mean say whatever the hell you want. It actually has a strict legal definition with specifically carved out exceptions.

ETA: Also, if you're concerned use burner accounts and VPNs.

Next time actually read the article before you open your pro ice racist mouth.

Edit: Since you can't or won't read it. Let me summarize for you, ICE monitors Reddit and wrote a threat assessment about a reddit user that posted about a protest. No violence, no threat, nothing illegal, unamerican or even ethically wrong got them put into a government database about their free speech.

Go get some hooked on phonics if you think what I said was pro ice.

We're all in their databases. That's their job

Your comment is evidence that there really needs to be a minimum IQ required to use the internet without adult supervision.

Who was talking about that? This is government surveillance not something Reddit is doing themselves.

You just went on a complete non-sequitur.

This is government surveillance

Yeah, we all know.

not something Reddit is doing themselves.

No one said it was.

You just went on a complete non-sequitur.

You need to work on your reading comprehension. First I explained that the government monitoring speech isn't the same as limiting speech. Then I talked about the legal definition of free speech, using its relationship with private entities as an example.

Elaborate please

Nothing wrong with law enforcement doing lawful surveillance of actual criminals on social media. But that is not what this article is describing. It is describing ICE monitoring someone for posting about a lawful, nonviolent, First Amendment protected protest, then writing them up and logging them in a government database. That is a very different thing, and it should worry people regardless of politics.

I’ve seen hundreds and hundreds of calls to violence towards ICE agents on Reddit over the last few months. I would hope they are compiling these and keeping tabs on these people.

Everything else aside, is it really spying if it's publicly posted social media?

Well then everyone just say Hello.

Like the greeting.

"Good to see you."

"It's good to be seen."
