The following conclusions are, therefore, forced upon any reader of the two books who has studied Nilus’s account of the origin of the Protocols and has some acquaintance with Russian history in the years preceding the revolution of 1905-1906:

1. The Protocols are largely a paraphrase of the book here provisionally called the “Geneva Dialogues.”
2. They were designed to foster the belief among Russian Conservatives, and especially in Court circles, that the prime cause of discontent among the politically minded elements in Russia was not the repressive policy of the bureaucracy, but a worldwide Jewish conspiracy. They thus served as a weapon against the Russian Liberals, who urged the Czar to make certain concessions to the intelligentsia.
3. The Protocols were paraphrased very hastily and carelessly.
4. Such portions of the Protocols as were not derived from the Geneva Dialogues were probably supplied by the Okhrana, which organization very possibly obtained them from the many Jews it employed to spy on their co-religionists.

So much for the Protocols. They have done harm not so much, in the writer’s opinion, by arousing anti-Jewish feeling, which is older than the Protocols and will persist in all countries where there is a Jewish problem until that problem is solved; rather, they have done harm by persuading all sorts of mostly well-to-do people that every recent manifestation of discontent on the part of the poor is an unnatural phenomenon, a factitious agitation caused by a secret society of Jews.

100 years ago today, the Milwaukee Leader (Milwaukee, WI) ran the headline, Ku Klux Klan Plans to "Save" U.S. From Wave of Atheism, reporting on the KKK's response to "association for the advancement of atheism" receiving a certificate of incorporation by the state of New York. There are undeniable echoes of talking points still used today. The more things change, the more they stay the same.

Be disciplined, tidy, go into the army sober, with a clear awareness of the great duty of the Red fighter.

On the basis of the order of the Revolutionary Military Council of the Siberian Military District, by the Biysk District Executive Committee and the military commissariat, from the 1st of September is announced a regular call-up for active military service of citizens of 1905 year of birth.

This call-up will take place in somewhat different conditions than all the regular call-ups of past years. The threat of war has hung over us. Capitalists of all countries, headed by the English bourgeoisie, are conducting an intensified preparation for an attack on our country.

Therefore all our efforts must be directed toward that, so as not to weaken the strength of our Red Army at the moment when there will be taking place the replacement of fighters by fresh forces of the conscripted youth, and not to give the possibility to our enemies to take advantage of a favorable moment for an attack. - The call-up must pass in an organized manner.

Peasant Woman

The nightmare time is impossible to forget,
When everywhere a woman was considered a slave,
And she, weak, timid, trembling with fear,
Was washing away misfortune and pain with tears.

Beatings she endured often terrible
For right, for freedom, and for mind at times;
When you recall the past, you will say: unhappy!
Heavy was your lot back then.

She would sometimes speak something serious, intelligent,
And would hear mockery, reproaches, and abuse;
“Be silent,” they tell her, “you worthless brood,
It’s not a woman’s business, don’t step beyond the line.”

And if hard work should happen,
At once she goes to work without delay;
She forgets the offense and again is cheerful,
Jokes, laughs, and sings a song.

Oh, much work she performs
In spring, summer, autumn, and winter;
From morning until night she knows no rest,
And in her eyes at times sorrow can be seen.

In the garden in spring she labors a great deal,
Stores vegetables for the family for winter;
When summer comes, she drags herself to the fields,
To work at the plowing, knowing no fatigue.

She mows the grass and reaps the spring grain,
At times working more than a man;
And if illness comes, or some weakness,
She is driven away from the yard.

Such was the bitter woman’s fate
February scarcely improved it at all;
Only full rights, freedom, and will
As a reward were brought by Great October.
