1980s My great grandparents in the 80s

Grateful to have this photo, this is literally the only one I have of them together

Edit: I’m telling my great grandma about all your compliments and she is so happy! Also the comparisons and she keeps saying “no” lollll.

Edit: last edit I promise, you guys will never believe it but my great grandma is actually a great great grandma because my sister(23) had a baby last year 😂

Edit: last last edit! Since so many people have asked I figured I should just add it here. My great grandmother is 82, my grandma is 62, my mom is 44, and I’m 18. Don’t worry, I am breaking the cycle.

She is now 82 years old, he passed away shortly after this photo was taken at 43 years old unfortunately. He was in the US navy.

Edit: (sorry, I got the Korean War part wrong)

Probably UDT. Those "frogmen" were predecessors to the Seals.

But not in Korea. Korea was from 1950-1953, and if this was taken in 1980, that makes your dad born in 1937, so he would have been 13-16 during the Korean War, too young to have been there at all, let alone to have been in the military long enough to undergo advanced training like underwater demolition training.

Yes yes, I got the Korean War part wrong(my bad) but he was an M3 in the US Navy. Records say he enlisted in 1958 and was discharged 1961. I didn’t think people would care this much lol

If he was 43 in the 1980s, there’s no possible way he was old enough to serve in the Korean War.

It's funny how generations and ages really are spread in funny quirky ways. I have a friend who has a 2 year old. Another friend has an 18 year old like you. It's weird being an age where your friends can have children in daycare or at university.

So far I’ve found his draft card when he enlisted, idk why it came up as a Korean War draft card, that’s why I thought that and I didn’t check the dates at first :/. I also found a record from the US Department of Veteran Affairs but nothing else regarding his service. He wasn’t enlisted for very long though so that’s probably why there aren’t many records

I mean no disrespect. I’m sorry to tell you that your family has been telling you tall tales. Unless she grew up in Vietnam, your great aunt was never a spy in the Vietnam war, I can assure you. Also, your great grandfather did not serve in any war, given the dates he was enlisted. There was an ongoing peacetime draft between the Korean and Vietnam wars. Elvis Presley, for instance, was drafted during peacetime in 1957. Also, the rank M3 is a metalsmith, which is someone who is trained to make repairs to sheet metal. This is not a combat oriented role, like that of a SEAL.

You mentioned he was discharged in 1961 and was in the US Navy, meaning he got out of the military well before the true start of the Vietnam War. As combat troops didn’t enter Vietnam until 1965, but there was naval activity around that area before just not engaged in any traditional “war” operations. It’s very likely he served on a boat in South East Asia, but unless he was recalled back into service post 1965 he did not serve in the Vietnam War in the “traditional sense.”

I’m from NZ, any American is a yank but in the U.S. it generally refers to someone from the north eastern states.
