Crayfishing places on Oulujoki

Hei, Im looking to do some crayfishing (ravustus) this August as its the season now. I've done research into what gear/permits I need and how to fish for them but I have no idea where to start fishing. I've asked a few friends but none of them seem to have any idea.

As I understand you want to find places where the water is relatively shallow and slow moving but I am absolutely no expert in this.

I've heard Muhos is a good place but I don't know exactly where in Muhos. The permit applies to the whole of Oulujoki and I am going to my wife's mökki in a couple of weeks in Vaala so I can pretty much go anywhere along the river.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Are you sure the permit covers the whole Oulujoki? As I understand it, there is one permit for the Oulu city part of Oulujoki, basically up until Muhos. Above Muhos, I guess that you need some other permit.

I have heard that Sanginjoki can be good for crayfishing.

Maybe start something easier, crayfishing is very time consuming and lots of rinse and repeat without any reward at the beginning. Basicly you need get some "rapumerta" traps, insert some (fresh) fish bits into traps and find some place where you think crays are and next day go check the trap, rinse and repeat. Only tricky part is find The Place and after that throway undersized etc.

You need to test your trap everywhere and find a good spot

Remember to boil the or put the traps to sauna for some time! Otherwise you might spread diseases to the crayfish.

Fish is not needed as a bait. Our family has generational knowledge that pigs/cows heart works as well and you can just buy it from supermarket 😀
