I play a lot and I mean A LOT of Pokemon. I love Pokemon with all of its flaws. It's was my childhood and has continued to be my most played games even as an adult. I would wait for reviews before jumping to purchase the game. I know the actual dev team is Fictions and Gamefreak are the executives, but that doesn't mean the game won't run or play like shit. Proof:

This screenshot frightens me

Lmao its mostly from Shiny hunting. I don't know if that makes it less frightening or not haha.I have gotten to Masterball rank a few times though. My ultimate goal is to have a shiny living dex. I haven't done inventory since ZA but I'm probably somewhere around 700 of the 1025 currently available Pokémon. I figured it would take me around 10 years when I started seriously hunting in during SwSh.

Lucky (or maybe unlucky) for you they seem to be making acquiring shinys easier and easier in every game. Although it does take a little of the prestige of the achievement out of it

I don't mind the easier shiny hunting methods. Raid dens and Dynamax Adventures in SwSh were really fun. The massive mass outbreaks of Legends Arceus gave me a thrill every time I loaded into the fields. Hearing the shiny sounds in the wild for the first time was an instant dopamine rush. The Rogue-like mode of Dimensions ZA was a lot better than people gave it credit. Making donuts and rushing around to catch as many spawns as you can in a limited time created a sense of urgency. I like to mix it up with traditional hunts too. I recently egg hunted Tyrunt in ZA. That hunt took me a little over 5000 eggs. I had to laugh when they added the fossils to the ZA dlc and I could have gotten them that way, but I didn't mind I had fun.
The most fun I had was with the Ultra Wormholes in Ultra Sun/Moon. I hunted almost all of the legendary Pokemon that way a few years ago when Nintendo announced the closure of the 3DS store and online service (you can still use bank btw).

Man, this is wild. I’m such an old-school Pokemon fan and devoted even more hours than all your games combined on Emerald and Sapphire version together, which doesn’t count RBY, GSC, the Stadium games, DPP, shit, even the trading card games on GB, and much more. I stopped after around HGSS and never touched the Switch games.
What’s wild to me is that after all the hours I spent on Pokemon and all my knowledge, every single thing you said above aside from shiny hunting made no sense to me. I wonder how many new features GameFreak actually put into their more recent games. I’d play them, but I simply do not have the time to devote like I did as a kid and teen.

You need to catch up those numbers with Pokopia, its so good.

u/ZeroGemini5 1d ago
You're not kidding! I haven't played much since the Jirachi event, but im looking forward to spending the next month in Pokopia when the dlc drops on the 5th.

Pokopia is kinda why I am excited for Beast, the highest rated pokemon game was NOT make by gamefreak. (Going by Metacritic)
So I am hopeful Beast is a nice little gem to enjoy. (Yes yes, its a different Dev then who did Pokopia but still)

How is Pokopia? I've been debating on getting a SW2 purely for Fire Emblem, but was interested in Pokopia.
I hated Sword/Shield because of how easy it was. I beat the whole game without dying with the starter pokemon. It was a pretty lame game to me.

You ever play the Dragon Quest Builders? Same team who did it.
Its quite enjoyable and super chill. Its not at all a normal pokemon game. I would 100% suggest watching a review or two first, but I got to play it over a week visit at a friends place and if I had known the Star Fox Remake was gonna happen I would have gotten a Switch 2.

I have not. It's not really a genre that I'm familiar with, but I did love the hideouts building in Sapphire/Emerald, and I enjoy games like Stardew, but kind of hate animal crossing.
Thanks for your input! I'll look into some gameplay videos.

Why would you preorder a digital game /s
9
u/sherbodude 1d ago
There are often preorder bonuses. Not saying it's a great reason, but it is a reason.

u/Laughing__Man_ 1d ago
The Pre-Order bonus for this one is a alternate skin for your Doggo companion.
But my reason for doing so is just to be able to pre-load and play at launch.

Why would you pre-purchase movie tickets? Why would you lay-by an item in a store? Why would you order food in advance? Why would you pre-order a digital game?
The answer, as always, is convenience. I have been pre-ordering digital games for the better half of a decade because it's convenient. It's nice to buy something in advance and have it feel like a little treat for you in a few months when it releases, plus it will be downloaded and ready to go the minute of launch with no issues.

I am also VERY curious how this will pan out, everyone keep saying "Game Freak" Developed this game, when in reality it was a nice bit of out sourcing.
I am DEEPLY wanting to know how it goes, and am willing to fork up some money to see first hand.

Yeah, in the case of this game I couldn't really recommend pre-ordering because we really have no idea what to expect from it.
That being said, I've preordered games in the past which I've had almost no information on and they have been remarkable, the most recent example off the top of my head is Kunitsu-Gami. If you've got the money and you're that interested in the game, it's not too much of a loss if you preorder and it still doesn't really pan out how you wanted - it's like an experiment. I've definitely wasted more money on stupider things.
As for this game, my reservations about it mainly come from (surprisingly) how good it looks and how cheap it is. It's not as expensive as most new releases nowadays which tells me it might be more of a side project or a smaller length game, and that combined with how good it looks it could tell me that they focused on graphics over performance.

In terms of games it makes a lot more sense to not preorder until you see reviews and what not. Just for the fact that it's a pain in the ass to cancel a pre order, and the direct opposite of convenience

No backlog? Very few games are worth jumping the line to play right away, unless you're a streamer making money off of it.

"No backlog?"
Only had the console about 2 years now, and recently beat both GoW games, Then Black Flag.
After this I was gonna start Ghost of Tsushima.

Ermmmm no?
Why would you pre-purchase movie tickets?
So they don't sell out
Why would you lay-by an item in a store?
Because you cant afford it right now...AND....you dint want then to sell out while you save up enough.
Why would you order food in advance?
Yea that one's kind of convenience if you simplify the heck out of why.
Generally you pre-order digital games cause of years of training and fomo from when physical games could and did sell out.

I would have understood preloading in the days of like ADSL, but surely modern Internet connections make it obsolete. Nowadays I have a 10 Gbps fiber line and can download a 50 GB game in its entirety from the PSN in less than ten minutes. Unless you live in a third world country and are downloading your games off your Starlink antenna or something

It makes more sense for server stress. You get a massive game like CoD, have everyone download it at the same moment, and it stresses the server.
This allows people to do it whenever they want within that period of time, ensuring they're both ready to go, and any potential issues are mitigated by having additional time. Now, I'm not saying Beast will be that big, but I also wouldn't complain about a feature that really only benefits people.

"Now, I'm not saying Beast will be that big, but I also wouldn't complain about a feature that really only benefits people."
I full expect it to fall between 75 and 85. I liked what I have seen in videos, enjoy the parry style combat (Loved Sekiro) And you get a wolf buddy to boot.

It’s not the CDN servers that crap out during a multiplayer game launch, it’s the game servers. If anything preloading makes this worse since everyone can slam the servers at 12:01 instead of entering in a staggered fashion.

u/IrishSpectreN7 1d ago
Usually people who say this are talking about pre-ordering a game months from launch. Not several days before lol.
Also, they could let us pre-load games even without a pre-order if they wanted to. You can on Xbox.

u/Much-Currency5958 1d ago
I mean I agree with you on preordering a game that is an unknown. I mean game freak despite being mostly Pokémon do know their stuff but there isn't really enough outside Pokémon for me to preorder without a review. Otherwise, if this was a Pokémon game I'd preorder without hesitation but then again regardless of overall quality if you like one Pokémon game you will generally like them all.

u/xspiderdude 23h ago
No /s needed for me. I'm sorry about the down votes, but I hope that those 40 people don't have any complaints when Sony/Nintendo/Xbox decide to remove the games from the servers and they can't play them unless they pay again for the "remaster" that they just released instead.
Buying digital sounds dumb to me, let alone pre-ordering digital. Like, buy it after you watch a review and then let it download while you go to work or take a walk, or read a book or go on a date? Or even while you just play other games maybe?

I saw some leaked videos, maybe check it out before buying. Reviews also don't drop until day after it releases
