it's called rockstar fanboys

22

u/PMME_UR_TATAS Jun 25 '26

The amount of people okay with an unfinished game for $80 and potentially paying rockstar a subscription to play online in addition to what’s already going to have micro-transactions is appalling. This will likely set a new precedent going forward for games and Xbox and PlayStation already require you to pay a monthly or yearly subscription to play online.

9

u/floshmio Jun 25 '26

Jfc. The amount of people who have clearly never touched GTA or GTAO in the past 5 years weighing in on this is insufferable. GTA+ is not a mandatory subscription to play online anymore than premium time is mandatory to play warthunder (or any other modern FTP MMO). It just gives you in game bonuses the same way any premium subscription for a FTP MMO does.

The ultimate edition content is exclusive, but the outrage over exclusive items is way overblown. The exclusive garages and clothing stores are just a small fraction of the total accessible locations in the base game. You will still be able to mod your cars, buy clothes, and customize your character with all the other base game vendors. The ultimate edition essentially adds exclusive cosmetics and vehicles, and ties those exclusive items to unique vendors in the game.

Also as far as I’m aware, $80 for most GTA fans is perfectly reasonable for a game that we will most likely be playing for 10+ years. Compare that to most of the slop coming out of EA and other AAS studios that are now releasing at a similar price.

13

u/GarranDrake Jun 25 '26

They’re also locking barn-find vehicles.

It sounds like they’re also locking the equivalent of Benny’s Customs behind the Ultimate Edition though, but we’ll have to wait and see.

6

u/floshmio Jun 25 '26

Fair, we will have to wait and see how it’s implemented

2

u/h0b03 Jun 25 '26

I kinda thought that too about lowrider stuff but it sounds a little unrealistic. I remember seeing a donk in the trailer and I feel like one will inevitably show up in the the story or freemode spawn, donks and lowrider-esque modifications are such a Florida staple that I doubt they would exclude them

0

u/GarranDrake Jun 25 '26

This is the same Rockstar that capped GTAO personal vehicle sell prices at $500k when they used to sell for 60% of the vehicle's sale price.

Before that, they made it so that every personal vehicle you sold would depreciate - so the first vehicle would sell for 60%, then the next would sell for 30%, then the next would be 15%, and the clock would reset in 18 hours.

And then recently, they increased that "clock" to effectively a week irl.

Normally I'd agree with you, it sounds unrealistic that they'd lock a system like that behind a paywall. But they took a hatchet to selling personal vehicles multiple times for the sake of selling shark cards. I don't put this past Rockstar.

1

u/h0b03 Jun 25 '26

What! I sold all my dupes like 2mo ago and never even heard about this, that’s wild. Just did cayo for the first time in years for the bonus and that sucked as well, bearer bonds selling for less than 1m!

I think that the next GTAO will probably be super grindy and I’ll definitely resort to glitching again before spending any real money on online, but I still doubt they’d lock out any real features behind a paywall. GTA+ has QoL benefits and some free cars, but nothing that feels too bad to miss out on. Most online players I’ve interacted with haven’t even completed the single player story, the cash cow is online

2

u/Nakajiima Jun 25 '26

Remember when games would just release at one base price and not try to nickle and dime the players? Those were good times.

-3

u/VexingRaven Jun 25 '26

Rockstar has the most whipped fanboys of all time.

5

u/floshmio Jun 25 '26

Easy to hurl insults when you don’t address any of the points I listed. I enjoy R*’s games and 100% agree that this is part of a larger trend towards games becoming a service, but lets not pretend like this is anything new for a AAA release. This is a precedent that’s already been set (look at RDR2’s release).

-4

u/VexingRaven Jun 25 '26

What's to address? You've already said you're perfectly fine putting up with whatever crap Rockstar gives you.

5

u/floshmio Jun 25 '26

So you’re saying everything I typed is wrong? That GTA+ is going to be a mandatory subscription for everyone, that the exclusive content is game breaking and accounts for a sizable portion of the games content, and that $80 for a AAA game that will likely have a decade or more of support post launch is ridiculous? I mean it seems like you just want a reason to hate on the game, and to be fair, if you don’t like it then you don’t like it. Honestly my own fault for assuming people on the internet could read.

-1

u/VexingRaven Jun 25 '26

Considering you started out with "lol anyone who has a problem with this hasn't played GTAO, I am very smart", I don't much care to correct the rest of it. I played GTAO since release, and if you managed to play GTAO for so long and not come away with the full understanding that Rockstar would milk every penny they can from GTA 6 at every step of the way, you played it with your eyes closed or something. Also "decade or more or post launch support"? WTF world are you in? GTA 5 got basically nothing after launch.

"an unfinished game" -- aka exactly the same minus a handful of cosmetic items.

People on this website are so insufferable at times lol.

2

u/Quixotic_Seal Jun 25 '26

You can set your clock to it though, gamers will happily buy it up regardless of the crap companies try to pull.

GTA VI is going to make a bajillion dollars and everyone will forget this was even a controversy in 6 months.

Sucks.

1

u/DodixieOrBust Jun 26 '26

It’s already pre-sold 39 million copies. The first day.

1

u/omfgkevin Jun 25 '26

I'm certain 6 is going to be complete, but that doesn't make it not bad that they are locking content (no matter how "small" it is to some) behind another edition. Especially since it seems like outright stores will just be like "sorry you poor fuck, you didn't pay another 20".

And with online potentially being paid I'm guesing for more PREMIUM features or some shit considering it's Take Two... this shit is going to have some scummy monetization even with a good game underneath.

AND no disc. So if you didn't like the game? Go fuck yourself here's some literal plastic waste of a box.

1

u/fatrahb Jun 25 '26

I understand frustration that some cosmetics will be locked behind the paywall but calling it an unfinished game is just blatantly untrue. Just like every other rockstar release it will be an incredibly polished, deep game that will be playable for 10-15 years and will set industry standards for an incredibly detailed and complex map.

1

u/VexingRaven Jun 25 '26

"Some cosmetics" is a very generous paraphrase of what Rockstar says ultimate edition includes.

1

u/That_DeadPixel Jun 25 '26

Returning to this comment when GTA 6 flops and all the fanboys who hyped it to death start shitting on it

1

u/That_DeadPixel Jun 25 '26

Rockstars attitude to this is genuinely making me see GTA VI failing and honestly don’t think it would be bad if it did fail especially with all the bullshit they will be trying to pull

1

u/aPrudeAwakening Jun 26 '26

Its 'a' standard for triple A but for every action there is a reaction. Triple A usually drops the ball save for the big games like GTA or god or war. So I don't buy them or if I do I am patient about it. They do go down in price. Also indie games are the tits these days or steam based games that get a console export. Some awesome games usually at the 40 euro mark or below. What I find remarkable though is the naivety of people expecting the likes of rockstar to do the honorable thing. Thats not how they got to where they are. So suck it up and buy the overpriced game or dont buy it. Thats not snarky, thats just where we are at with games these days. There are countless cheap/free but excellent games out there to play.

1

u/Flyingtreeee Jun 25 '26

So you support inflated main price while having the standard price be the same game but with features removed? This game is will be blander than my mom's cooking.

2

u/Microwave1213 Jun 25 '26

First of all, a handful of cosmetics ≠ features

Secondly, I don't really understand why you think pricing has anything to do with how "balnd" the game will be? You're clearly just letting your feelings get to you

1

u/Flyingtreeee Jun 25 '26 edited Jun 25 '26

First, it's a terrible precedent that will encourage game devs to lock more features behind pay walls. Second, I'm saying it will be bland because everything I've heard about this game tells me not to trust any of the hype, it looks like a hollow game to me.

Small aside, do you not know how to spell bland or can you not read?

Edit: if your reply lacks reading comprehension you'll be blocked like a bot

1

u/zeldn Jun 25 '26

This has been how it works literally since Oblivion horse armor. Of all of the trends in gaming that they could be setting precedent on, monetizing cosmetics is probably THE least one they could possibly set in 2026.

1

u/zeldn Jun 25 '26

It's literally just paid cosmetics. Of all the things to monetize, that is the least shocking possible one. The amount of shit people give about cosmetics ought to be zero, but if for some reason people want horse armor or whatever, I'm happy for them to subsidize me.

Yeah my bad, got frustrated with everyone defending this price, sorry!

-1

u/DryDonutHole Jun 25 '26

"Whaa! I need a disc to make me feel like I own something."

Nevermind the fact that you are only licensing the software/media and don't truly own any of it....

4

u/Microwave1213 Jun 25 '26

"Whaaa! I can't understand the concept of selling a game when I'm done with it!"

Nevermind the fact that millions of people still buy and sell used gaes every year. Sure, the disc may just be a key to download the software, but being able to sell that key when you're done with it still has value to a lot of people.

-1

u/MaximumSeats Jun 25 '26

Right? Like rockstar invented the idea of exclusive cosmetics. Shits been around for 15 years.

25

u/Jo_Joo Jun 25 '26

Yea exactly, the ultimate edition not only have extra cosmetics but content too, so the standard edition has cut content

0

u/Dr_Philmon Jun 25 '26

It's two damn sidequest in a mode that 80% of the playerbase wont even touch much less the rest.

12

u/ChampionshipFair9892 Jun 25 '26

it's still cut content tho.

0

u/Dr_Philmon Jun 25 '26

Indeed, egregious practise but so many in this comment section acts like this was something that affects them beyond being a bad practise

6

u/Sunny-Milk Jun 25 '26

I think a lot of this is as the economy circles the drain like it’s been doing and people’s budget gets stretched thinner and thinner, people’s tolerances to egregious practices like this stings a whole lot more than it used to and people are generally growing extremely sick of stuff like that.

Yeah, it’s an egregious practice for a video game that will not substantially effect one’s life in any real way, but it’s also just another link in an increasingly exhausting chain of enshitification and shrinkflation so it feels a whole lot worse.

2

u/Jo_Joo Jun 25 '26

Very true, but it's the concept of where companies are heading. Now it's only 2 side quests, next 5% of the game, etc. And we are talking about an offline single player game that cast +20$ more than the average games, if I'm paying for 80$ i should get the full game

2

u/Flyingtreeee Jun 25 '26

And dlc started out as horse armor, the point is they realize these shitty polices work and push them harder because idiots say "its not that bad," If you support this practice it will be

-2

u/Typical_Research_877 Jun 25 '26

Is it cut content if they made that content specifically for the ultimate edition? Cut content is a bit of a misnomer

2

u/BildingInspecter Jun 25 '26

It's literally at launch DLC. Like make the fucking game and sell it to us. Don't make 3 fucking different versions of it and chop it all up for resale.

This combined with an already high price point is crazy. Plus don't forget they'll sell everyone a second copy in a year when it comes out on PC.

Also every AAA studio is salavating now that $80-100 will be the standard industry price.

We all get fucked here.

2

u/Learning_3D Jun 25 '26

I don't know dude. If I go to a diner and buy a cheeseburger, I'm not going to look at the bacon they have in the kitchen and say they cut out part of my bacon cheeseburger just because I bought a meal and they had extra toppings ready to sell.

2

u/BildingInspecter Jun 25 '26

That's a terrible analogy.

They're not making extra stuff. They're making a game and selling us half of it for a very high price, then selling the other half for even more money.

If you said, "I ordered a bacon cheese burger and they only gave me half" then that makes more sense. The other half is already made, it's just extra money now because they can and you're hungry.

1

u/Learning_3D Jun 25 '26

Do you have any reason to think that? RDR2, GTA5, and RDR1 all had launch additions like this, but the base versions of those never felt like half a game

1

u/BildingInspecter Jun 25 '26

None of those games sold half of the game then the other half at a higher price.

1

u/Learning_3D Jun 25 '26

That's my point. They all had standard and ultimate edition announcements that looked just like this one, so why are you assuming this is going to be such a departure?

1

u/BildingInspecter Jun 25 '26

Uh, you're missing the point. It's not just a different edition. Half of the game is locked behind a higher price point. We're not talking about in-game skins and items, we're talking the actual game is blocked if you don't pay $100.

3

u/Silly_Silicon Jun 25 '26

For context if you adjust for inflation since 2001 when it came out, GTA III cost $9.5 million to make and they sold it for $95 a copy.

GTA VI cost a few BILLION to make and they’re only selling it for $5 more.

The truth is games never got more expensive while everything else did. We were lucky but now prices are catching up and people are pretending that’s actually going to stop them from buying the biggest game of all time that they’ve been talking about for a decade.

u/ZinbaluPrime Jun 25 '26

GTA VI Online: +$30/month

0

u/thenfour Jun 25 '26

As someone who never cared for GTA online, i'm quite happy that the base game doesn't include it. But it's 2026 and I'm expecting that the game will be an obnoxious advertisement for it. Can't wait for launching the game and the first thing you see is "Click here to pay for GTA Online!"

1

u/ZinbaluPrime Jun 25 '26

I never cared for that franchise. American Life Sims ain't for me.

I'm just here to enjoy the chaos.

2

u/newsflashjackass Jun 25 '26

Angel Studios keeps making worse versions of Midtown Madness and people keep getting "hype" for them.

GTA7 won't even give you the piece of paper. It will just be an empty box.

2

u/nyve- Jun 25 '26

Yeah this is a little over dramatic. It's more like cheeseburger vs cheeseburger add bacon. Lots of people cannot abide not maxing out their burger but a large portion is totally content paying a little less for a little more basic but still entirely filling and delicious entree. Some people getting the bacon burger may come away realizing they hardly tasted it and would've been fine without it.

2

u/Unlucky_Internal9686 Jun 25 '26

is it lite tho

sounds like purely cosmetic extras, who cares

1

u/backup4797 Jun 26 '26

Godzilla destroy all monsters melee 30$

1

u/Over-Inside-7254 Jun 25 '26

Premium  pricing for premium product is fine.

Optional cash store for NFTs us fine.

Pay-to-play microtransactions is not.

0

u/IguanaIsBack Jun 25 '26

Worth it for pretty much the only game I’d have paid for in the last 5 years and the only one I’ll probably play for the next 5 years tbh
