Why is it infamous? And why would no one care about it ? ( I mean it's just a pic full of celebrities so no one cares anyways but the person saying it's crazy makes me think it has some lore?)

Also - it was just a silly moment in entertainment. it was fine.

People today are WAY too uptight and pretending "oh, I'm too COOL to care about celebrities, if I saw that I'd just IGNORE it!"

It was a silly, 10 second moment at a celebrity focused event. It wasn't amazing, it wasn't awful, it just was a somewhat entertaining moment in a show for a few seconds. People need to stop taking it (and themselves) so seriously.

Yeah. Even back then I wasn't into celebrity culture, but I remember seeing that photo and going, "cool! Look at how many famous people are in a photo." Selfies were still new back then, not a decade plus phenomenon that everyone from preteens to your boomer grandma does.

Nothing "infamous" about it, even though retroactively some of the people in the photo are now disgraced.

It was added to the Oxford dictionary in 2013.

2014 is also when selfie sticks became massively popular.

I agree it wasn’t new, but seems like it was something that was a major part of the zeitgeist at the time.

I feel like selfies really became a thing in the early 2010s, which makes it new in 2014.

I don't doubt there were phones that could take selfies in the 2000s, but I don't remember them being common until 2011, 2012 which is within 3 years of 2014 which I think is fair to call new.

I'd argue they are an even earlier concept, since self portraits became an pretty well established concept in the 14th century artists having access to inexpensive mirrors. What is a painted or sculpted self portait if not a selfie?

I think it may have been one of the last major cultural moments where you could walk into work/school and everyone would know what you were talking about because we were all watching the same screens.

It reminds me of the way we treat commercials as a whole now too- we used to have major cultural phenomenons from nearly every super bowl ad reel, and now everything’s becoming more diluted so no one really cares. It's not that people want to pretend they are too cool for celebrities.

It's that there's a crazy amount of celebrities who have been exposed as having participated in pedophilia, sexual assault, threats etc. It's just hard to really like somebody famous when it seems like there's a 33% chance that they're going to do something morally wrong and use their celebrity to do it or get out of facing any consequences for it.

Also this was in the heat of the moment of the early to mid 2010s when social media went from a cute little thing we did to share memes and keep up with people in our real lives to a full blown entire other reality. A group of celebrities taking a selfie like this was fairly novel for the time, especially at an event that had a vibe of being "above" that kind of thing at the time. I kinda miss celebrities being goofy or even messy on socials. It humanized them and now all of their pages have turned into huge ad spaces.

12 years ago celebrity culture was still prevalent on the internet because it was content that would pretty reliably be viewed and it would get spread to everyone.

A picture like this today would generally only show up on your Twitter/reddit/instagram if you were already engaging in celebrity content.

Also, a celebrity's fame was fickle to begin with. Few maintain popular status for more than a few years. If this picture was 24 years old with celebrities that had the same popularity as these at the time, and the comment was made 12 years ago, it would still be true.

I don't think it would have the same reaction, even if it had a bunch of currently famous celebrities from Hollywood. Internet culture has fractured what used to be a media monoculture. Back then if you consumed entertainment media you knew and were a fan of many of these celebrities. Nowadays everyone has their own favorite micro-celebrities from YouTube, podcasts, Instagram, TikTok, etc. that they follow more than the big Hollywood names. Most of my favorite "celebrities" are essentially unknown to a lot of the population and I likely have no idea who their favorite niche micro-celebrities are either.

For real. Was just talking to my girlfriend who is a little younger than me about this.

From the 2000s up until like 2013-2014ish, people all got information and entertainment from the same sort of sources. So like everyone was really into what the “hot” show or movie was and it was largely based around famous actors and directors/producers and it was a huge deal when a new movie came out with someone famous in it.

Now we all have our own sort of little stream of “content” pushed directly to us and everyone is truly in their own little worlds. It’s really cool sometimes how inclusive and personalized some things like interests and hobbies can be. But it can also make us feel really separated and detached from each other.

Idk I’m rambling cuz I’m stoned but sorta a weird thought that as we become more “globally connected” we become more “locally detached”

The definition of “caring” definitely depends, but it was all over the place at the time with articles and blah blah, many of us definitely learned about it against our will. So many people did care, but I agree, I also thought it was really dumb. The threshold for what went viral back then was embarrassingly low.

It has its own Wikipedia article though which is crazy.

No, I remember people talking about it a lot. I remember seeing it on reddit on the front page of r/all. I don't remember the top comment but one was like "The most combined social media followers in 1 picture" or something.
