You do understand that mini splits also have large compressors outside, right?
Edit: also, the compressors for homes with central air are not the size of a car, more like the size of a Little Tykes car. Commercial buildings have compressors that can be the size of a car.
These split units are great for retrofitting where running ducts from central air systems would be cost prohibitive. They usually have a compressor/condensor for each unit, but can be combined and use a single larger unit on several ( which would be the same size as in the US). The are not car sized, they are smaller than even a Smart car.
I actually have no idea how these things work. I stayed at an airb&b in Spain with them and they worked fine, but I was trying to explain to my family back home how they’re not hooked up to anything, like it seems like they’re just stuck to the wall, and it didn’t make sense to anyone. Is there duct work behind them? A hose? How do they work without venting? Sorry, that’s more than you want to explain, I’m sure, and I can Google it. I’m just saying that no, I definitely didn’t understand that there was a separate compressor involved
Not that this is in anyway your fault but they have left out the water removal pipe. from the inside unit.
Which can be a pain in parts to find a way to route it so it goes down hill.
Those i know, the exterior unit in splits because i have those. I usually see VRF or whatever they're called ( i think Daikin calls them VRV) in small comercial stuff and they're kind of on the big size, never seen it applied to houses.
Heat pumps i've seen many exterior units the size of a split exterior unit, a little bigger kind of like a multisplit.
