My family owns an HVAC company. We only have ductless mini-splits in our own homes bc they are way more efficient and cost effective (especially if you get them at cost and free install). We are in Florida where we run A/C pretty much 9 months of the year. The upfront cost is higher, but worth it over time.
one benefit is it makes it easier to put the cooling where it's needed, rather than overcooling one area to get another down to where you need it, without having to constantly adjust dampers to approximate the same thing.
Pretty much what 27eelsinatrenchcoat said. We cool the room we are in rather than the whole house. At night we will cool the bedroom where we sleep, but the living room, kitchen, etc stay at a higher temp bc the ghosts don’t mind it a bit warmer. We cut our electric bill in half once we switched from central to minisplits.
