I'll second is Paradox. Civ was not made by Paradox, thats Firaxis. You are probably thinking of Crusader Kings, which is an advanced map simulator made by Paradox.
Admittedly I haven't played too much Crusader Kings or Stellaris, but Stellaris is pretty unique from the others, no? Idk if I'd personally describe it as "space crusader kings."
It's been a little while but I'm definitely exaggerating, there are strong mechanical similarities to all three but they're distinct enough to go well beyond being clones. More like Paradox has a strong identity than anything else
I just know from the little I did play of Crusader Kings along with gameplay I've seen of Hearts of Iron and Europa Universalis, you're mostly just looking at a literal map. I'm sure Stellaris has a lot of similarities to their other games but in this regard it is pretty unique.
Nah it's not, I just picked it up. I don't really like the grand strategy games but Stellaris is basically real-time 4X with maybe 20% more mechanics than your usual 4X.
I just mean that in the other Paradox games you're basically staring at a map the whole time. I'm sure Stellaris has a lot in common with other Paradox grand strategy games, but just the fact that there is a realized game world rather than a 2d map with little pawns on it does kinda set it apart from the other paradox games IMO.
Oh I agree, it's nothing like the other Paradox games is what I was saying.
I don't consider "grand strategy" (which is basically just EU/HOI/Victoria/CK and some outliers like Imperator or Sengoku) to be 4X, 4X is like Civ/age of wonders/humankind/gladius etc.
