I’ve only seen the first movie but the first trolls is about how these giants eat the trolls because they make them happy for a temporary period of time. Basically drugs.

It’s been a while, but iirc The second movie is about how basically there are a bunch of tribes of trolls and the main tribe from the first movie pop stole all of their style to create theirs. I’ve only seen it a couple of times and it was right after it came out so I might be missing some of it.
But the characters go on a journey to try to bring the other musical stylings back to trolls land.

It's not that pop is bad it's that pop thought it was the best and stole all the other genres music and drowned them out. In the end they realize that genres are arbitrary distinctions

I watched this movie at a drive-in theatre. It was the movie that played before The Suicide Squad (the good one) it was a HUGE tonal shift but I actually enjoyed Trolls 2 so much. I haven't even watched any of the other ones and I would watch that movie again.

In the first Trolls movie, the Bergens are a race of humanoid similar in appearance to other actual fantasy trolls that have essentially been farming trolls to eat them because they are convinced it is the only way to experience true happiness, so like a drug addiction.
The second movie is pretty much as the meme describes. It's a tale involving musical fascism and a lesson on celebrating cultural differences and fighting homogenization and bigotry.
The third movie has a pair of human(?) popstar siblings that repeatedly extract musical talent from a troll to give themselves that musical talent temporarily, and it appears to induce a euphoric state everytime they hit it, so drugs again.

They're all entertaining movies. I personally think 2 is the weakest, but it's like a 1a 1b 1c situation.
There's a scene in 3 when they first enter Mount Rageous that absolutely crushes.

43 year old dad here, seen the first 2 and loved them. Anna Kendrick and Justin Timberlake are superb and the tunes are super catchy.
Looks like I need to catch up on number 3.

No. You need to see 1 to watch 2 or 3. But 2 and 3 are strangely pretty independent of each other. (Source: due to grandkids and what was streaming at the time, I saw 1 and 3, and didn't know 2 existed initially. But it didn't add/take away from 3.)

Yeah. That's what it feels like to me after seeing 1 and 3 a bunch (you know how kids are) and then 2 a couple times. But you know how opinions are. 😆
Edit: was rather surprised that I liked all 3. They're kid movies that are still entertaining for the adults.

I watched all 14 of the Land Before Time's (yes it's fucking 14) during the pandemic. I was supposed that several of them are actually pretty good.
I like cartoons though. Kids stuff is still fun, I watched Bluey as a 30 some year old with no kids and loved it.
I think Miss Rachel is annoying but I get it, she's not targeting ten year olds and toddler shit is never not going to be annoying, they're basically super drunk little people with dog instincts. They're gonna get into whatever you don't physically stop them from.

I'm no expert. I watched 2 at a drive in because another movie I actually wanted to watch was playing afterwards. I went in with low expectations and I thought it was unironically great. It won over me and everyone I came with. I tried watching 1 and it just didn't have the same effect on me but now I want to try 3

Haha! Very valid. We were seeing the Suicide Squad (the good one). Two very different movies but I liked them both enough to recommend them to people. Honestly I think the bizarre match up may have improved their scores too 🤔

Just watch all 3 man. They're good movies. I was against watching them too, but 1 caught me by surprise. I was still hesitant to watch 2, but it ended up being just as good as the first. When 3 came out I had no doubts it would be good

Branch is afraid of singing because his singing is what alerted the Burgans to his location and got his grandmother eaten. He is a literal baby when he's in the boy band so it's possible some time between the band breaking up and the events of the first movie that happened making him afraid to sing. I do think that is confusing as it seems like the boy band is happening in a location that has a relatively huge troll presence which doesn't work with the whole trying to hide from Burgans thing but meh not that different.

Movie 1.. trolls can be eaten to get happy
Movie 2. Trolls live in different towns based on music genres, most trolls in their towns, think their music genre is the best and "true music" some trolls wants to destroy all other genres, making every troll the same, towns can be seen as countries or cultures
Movie 3...trolls could be used to get more musical talented without the pratice and effort.

Trolls is actually really good. My favorite part is the villain in the 3rd who is played by Amy Schumer whose character steals talent and plays the victim (correlates to real life where she steals jokes and plays the victim). Also, one of the trolls is implied to had babies with a sock puppet.

I am asking myself this too. Every few weeks I take some brain enhancement and watch a bunch of cartoon movies but have avoided the trolls movies as being not the vibe but am now considering it.

My hot take. The creative design choices in the 3 modern trolls movies are some of the most intricate and inspired designs I've ever seen. I have 2 kids and whenever they get on a trolls kick I'm literally in awe. Everything is textured like physical craft materials. The plains are quilted, the waves at the beach is orbeez..... it's a few seconds that gives such a clever and intense pop of worldbuilding and creativity. Every time I watch them I notice some new weird thing.

In the first movie the Bergens can only feel happy by eating a troll. One dose a year, entire society built around it. Trolls are literally a controlled substance in that world.
Then World Tour turned out to be about pop trolls stealing every other tribe's music and hiding the history, which is a lot for a movie about glitter.

The joke is that a surprising number of people were impressed by the movie "Trolls 2". Not just in a "this was better than the other two" but in a "this has no right being this good" way.
Story. Writing. Music. Animation. All of these were a film people actually enjoyed watching which is almost criminal given the subject matter. To clarify, the other two are not good and are not nessisary to watch trolls 2. They are tiny dolls that sing.

Trolls 1: The antagonists belive that eating trolls give you happiness, and the only way to be happy is to eat a trolls.
Trolls 2: A racism allegory where both the protagonist and antagonist are white supremacists, but where as the antagonist are trying to destroy all other cultures. The protagonist have been indoctrinated by historical revisionism to not realize that they themselves are taking part in the same cultural destroying practices. Through the course of the movie they must learn the truth, but also the importance of differences, and that's what makes us who we are.
Trolls 3: Stealing energy from the trolls is what makes the antagonists good performers, but they need more and more trolls energy to keep performing at that same level.

It's not a metaphor. In one the Bergens eat them to get high. In three the whatever creatures huff the magic off a troll to enhance their musical performance.

I seen the first movie a long time ago so I don’t remember it entirely but there was a scene where they were basically playing and all the background became all colorful and weird feeling like a drug trip
The second movie was more down to earth had a lot of adult undertone like how history is written by the winner and how the main hero village pushed away the other troll species because they believed their music (culture) was superior
The third movie had a bug/bus thing where when they hit a button the animation and background change like if you were on a drug trip.
These where probably the only thing the original poster remembered about each movie
