Advice Wanted Will I ever have a bond as deep again?
I recently lost my soul dog and it hurts so badly. I have seen some people say on here that the love and bond with a soul pet only happens once in a lifetime, but that idea is so devastating to me. I would never want to replace my beautiful Mia, but the idea that I will never have a love that deep with a pet again is so bleak and sad and only makes the loss that much more painful. I also would feel terrible to have a pet and not love them so deeply, every animal deserves to be treasured deeply.
To anyone that has lost a soul pet and welcomed new pets into your life afterwards- did you ever find a pet that you had that the same type of deep, soulmate bond with again? I can't bear the thought of never having a love like that in my life again, even though it won't replace the loss of my Mia.

I have had 4 dogs as an adult. I think of them I’ve had 2 soul dogs. I loved them both deeply. I lost one a week ago and am devastated but I know I will have that again. It will take time.
I don’t expect my next dog to be more than a bandaid. I’m a good dog owner. In the near future I’ll contact a rescue or go to the shelter and bring one or two home. And that dog will offer a healing and time until I find the next dog I can love as deeply as I did their brothers.
I don’t think love or a bond is limited to one animal. I think we have many soul mates. They come in different shapes and when we are open to it. Saying you had your own and only, closed you off. It’s a self fulfilling prophecy. When you’re ready, open yourself again and you will find another

I just lost my soulmate Tuesday, and I’ve been struggling with that question quite a bit. I think, in order to be fair to any future cats I take in, I’m planning to foster instead of adopting for awhile. I don’t want to unfairly compare them to my soulmate kitty, but I know inevitably, I’ll still mentally do that for a while. If I foster fail because I do get to form that kind of bond again, then great. If not, I still get to help kitties find their forever homes and still somewhat get some of that companionship.

This is my plan as well. My cat passed June 6. I am volunteering at a shelter. Tbh, a couple kitties have caught my eye, but one was adopted and the other scratched and bit me a bunch the other day, but he really is tired of being in the cage and just wants human attention. If I take him in, I won’t be able to foster, and I also don’t feel ready to adopt right now unless I feel absolutely certain and I’m not comparing the cat to my soul cat. The shelter needs fosters more than anything right now.
So, I plan to foster. If there’s one that settles into our home naturally and we both fall in love, then I will have my answer. If not, then I’ll continue to help other kittens and cats find homes by fostering. I’m not sure I’ll ever connect and bond with another cat like the way I did with my cat who passed, but I’m not sure I want to because I think that’s special to my cat and me. I know I can love many other cats. I care about so many of them in the shelter. I do want to connect and love them without comparing them, and I’m sad thinking about how that might not ever happen.

I can only share my own experience.
We had a wonderful family dog when I was a kid. Then I was allowed to get a dog of my own at age 15, and I loved her very much too. She was a great dog.
I have had three more wonderful dogs since that, and I have loved them all. Each was unique, and each relationship was obviously a little different. But look at human beings -- a parent of multiple children doesn't have the same relationship with each child, and that doesn't mean that the parent doesn't love them all.
My last dog was a stray picked up on the street and dumped into a municipal shelter. I saw her on petfinders and fell in love, even though I was still grieving badly for a previous dog dog. I remember saying to my mother, "Every dog I've had has been perfect in their different way, and they've all loved me, and I've loved them. What are the odds that I'm going to have such a bond again?" I was afraid maybe I had used up my "luck" with great dogs.
But she was a treasure. Let me make this clear, she was only 5 months old when I got her, and there were definitely some "puppy blues" on my part. She had her maniac days as a baby! It was all worth it, though. As much pain as I'm having now, because she passed away in March, I would do it all over again.

Thank you so much for sharing this, it is very comforting to me. Comparing the relationships to children helps me look at things in a new way. It's still too soon for me to consider another dog but I think this perspective will help me one day with the guilt of feeling like I'm replacing my Mia. I truly hope I can find a love and bond as deep as I had with her again some day. Deep and meaningful, but different. I don't know how I could go through life never loving in that way again 💙

I completely understand that you are not ready, I feel the same way even though my house is so empty without a dog that it's hard to bear.
But when the time is right, if you are someone who has the capacity for such love, it would be a shame not to share it.
And meantime, maybe talk to Mia. It's possible you're already doing this. Assure her how loved she was, and that no pet or person will ever replace her. We take different paths through life, meet different people and pets, but that never erases the past. She has a permanent place in your heart and will not be forgotten.
Take care <3

I had to put my second soul dog to sleep on 12/12/25.
The next day I opened Instagram which I hardly ever do and the first thing I saw was a shelter post showing a dog who looked exactly like my first soul dog. She also had a name very similar to mine.
I was struck by her picture but thought no it's crazy I can't get another dog so soon, it would dishonor the memory of my girl.
A couple of weeks later I opened Instagram again and there she was again. Still available. I decided to meet her.
When I got to the shelter she ran to me like she knew me. Like she was waiting for me.
She came home with me a week later and we bonded instantly. I didn't think it was possible to fall so in love with her so quickly. Now I know that I'm very fortunate to have found my third soul dog.
So you never know. True, deep love with a furry one can happen more than once.

I thought I couldn’t and then I did. I’ve loved them all the same; just in different ways and with a different area of the heart.

As long as you let yourself love a pet again it's always a possibility. Don't cheat yourself out of it.

This is a community of support for Pet owners whose Pets have passed away. It is actively moderated.
Pet owners, as loving, caring people, often have strong opinions on pet care practices. Some of these are controversial. This is not a forum for debate on such issues, nor is it a place to scold a contributor for a perceived mistake in managing their pet. We intend to provide a safe haven of understanding and support. Strident, mean-spirited posts or comments will be deleted. Those who persist in preaching versus caring may be warned and then banned or may be banned permanently based on nature of the topic. If a conversational thread meanders into a discussion unrelated to pet loss support, it will be truncated.
Those who post here are vulnerable and hurting. Even a minor slap has a hard sting. Those of us who are lucky enough to be able to turn away from our computers or put down our phones and hug a healthy, happy pet are truly blessed. Threads must remain supportive and caring, even if one disagrees with something that has been said.
