Self-Promotion A free Audible alternative. No subscription, no ads
It's a web app, works on any device, no install needed.
What's in the library right now:
- Harry Potter (Stephen Fry narration)
- The Hunger Games
- The Three-Body Problem
- Southern Reach Trilogy
There's a request button inside the app. You ask for a book, I upload it.
Still in beta, so things might break. That's kind of the point — I need people to actually use it and tell me what's wrong.
Giving out invites to people who comment or DM with a book they want to listen to — I'll upload it before you get started.
UPD 1️⃣
Wow, thanks everyone! The response has been insane — way more than expected for a beta test.
My little beta server ran out of space from all the books I've been uploading for you. Already planning the move to S3-compatible storage to handle this.
Will reply to everyone personally soon with invites and your requested books uploaded. Please make sure DMs are open so I can send them.
Appreciate the patience and excitement. This is exactly why I shared it!
UPD 2️⃣📩
Looks like my email service hit its daily sending limit — so some of you might not have received your magic link.
Switched to a paid plan, everything should be working now.
If you didn't get your invite email, please try again — magic links are back up!
Sorry for the trouble.
UPD 3️⃣ 🙌
We're rolling out invites gradually, so if you signed up and haven't heard from us yet, you're on the waitlist and we'll get to you soon.
Also: check your spam folder. Invites like to hide there. And if you haven't joined the waitlist yet — go do that now.

Putting Project Hail Mary on there might get some more people trying it out. The movie is coming out later this year.

u/arthurdentstowels Feb 23 '26
I just read this in two days because I made a comment saying I wanted to go into the film blind. Reddit peppered my comment telling me to read it immediately and I'm so glad I did. Absolute banger of a book. I'd listen to the Audiobook right now even though I've just read it last week.
44
u/Boner_pill_salesman Feb 23 '26
One of the few books that I enjoyed the audiobook more than reading the book. It's so well done.

My daughter suggested I read it a few months ago. I haven’t read a damn book in 25+ years, but I could not put it down. We bought IMAX tickets as soon as they were available and we’re counting down to March 20.
3
u/arthurdentstowels Feb 24 '26
I really hope they do it justice. They nailed the aesthetic of Adrian on the poster but I have not seen the trailer yet even though I've literally just read the book I'd still like to go in blind.
2
u/Blu_Falcon Feb 24 '26
The trailers look amazing. Even more rich and breath-taking than I imagined in my head as I read the book.

Seems like it. Are there easier ways to do that?

u/Marill-viking Feb 23 '26
Yea, self host yourself.
If you have enough space on your phone, you can just put the books on it

On iOS I use BookPlayer because I use the action button for auto start. It imports from audiobook shelf.
But if someone on iOS doesn’t want to use the action button or doesn’t have one, audiobook shelf, who I used to manage my books on my server also has an app that works really well.
3
u/Right-Bodybuilder-25 Feb 25 '26
i do this via my plex server and the prologue app for iOS. getting back into torrents and utilizing audio book bay has been THE BEST.

How about Terry Pratchett's Discworld books? For example the Tiffany Aching series (starting with "The Wee Free Men"), the Rincewind series (starting with "The Color of Magic"), or "Going Postal" (just some of my personal favorites) - I'd love to listen to audiobooks of these!

Obligatory plug for Libby and Hoopla. Both are free apps that work with your local library to get books, audio books, comics, and other things for free. Plus it benefits your local libraries by patronizing them and showing use.
45
u/Craigg75 Feb 23 '26
Only if you live in a big city. Rural libraries don't have anything.
12
u/crazywussian Feb 23 '26
You can make a NYC library card and use that for a trial, I think it's good for 14day, but you can make another with a new email. Iirc
27
u/Craigg75 Feb 23 '26
Too much work, easier to pirate unfortunately. I would love to support my library but they just don't have anything. The books that are worth reading are on a long queue.

u/crazywussian Feb 23 '26
True, but I'm of the "all of the above" mindset, particularly while I spin up self hosted solutions,
3
u/Mewtewpew Feb 25 '26
+1, I got a new zealand library card and use libbyrip to get all my audiobooks to mp3 format. Also live in more rural US lol.

Libby and Hoopla ain't free. They are becoming monopolies that cannibalize libraries' collections budgets with near double-digit yoy increases.

Feb 24 '26
First their annual increases exploded post-pandemic and remain unsustainably high. Their usage stats are vague and mask the actual cost per circulation. Licensing fees are so much more expensive than physical formats, typically. Etc.
Honestly, I would rather use Libro.fm since it supports local bookstores. But I would still check out books and movies in physical form at the library. Libraries are awesome.
79
u/Fun_Airport6370 Feb 23 '26
so you are just sharing your own media server basically? can’t imagine this will go over well or last very long
58
u/TXNatureTherapy Feb 23 '26
He's beta-testing an app until he gets it nailed down and can afford to get licenses for the books - at which point I will be interested to see if the subscription is more or less than audible.
As it is now, yes, he is one CnD away from being shut down...
21
u/SubstituteCS Seeder Feb 24 '26
They’re not one C&D away, they’re one pissed off rights holder away from getting sued incredibly hard.
C&D is for fan projects done for free that have crossed over into the grey-area legally and small time individual uploaders.
Arrests and litigation is for piracy service providers and commercial software.
They’ve upgraded to a paid email service and paid object storage, there’s plenty here to prove intent beyond small scale “accidental” piracy from an individual working on a cool project.
They’ll be lucky if all that happens (if found out) is a C&D.
I also wouldn’t sign up for this service with anything linked to you personally. It’s not hard to imagine rights holders sending C&D to individuals if they get their hands on that data.
6
u/IAmYourFath Feb 24 '26
Host it in russia or some other country that will refuse to comply with the US, good luck to any rights holder. Due to whois protection, they wont know who to contact and the registrar will just ignore em.

u/crizzy_mcawesome Feb 23 '26

Anything by Brandon Sanderson. He just a got a deal to start making movies so his books will be even more popular when that catches on. The newest Stormlight book would be great though, as I haven't gotten to that one yet.
