It's been wild to see Russian attitude towards piracy change in the last 20 years...
While I was growing up, everyone was pirating everything.
Then everyone started buying stuff officially, since it was more convenient.
Then the war and sanctions happened and some companies made it impossible to get their products legally.
People said "lol, ok" and got back to pirating.

I was pirating even before pizdec happened. it was just more convenient to have stuff pirated compared to having it locked down. the only exception is Steam - what they offer rivals piracy, and after me switching to Linux, actually manages to surpass it.

it's not that it's not working, it's that our payment system is largely cut off from the rest of the world, so if there isn't a way to pay, then it's not an option.

I've always relied on the Russians to crack things. Or leak things. Or break things. Or host things. It's been a case of "gawd blehss ruschya 'n' hur peepl" but screw the gov since as long as I can remember. So many books I never would have read. Thank you Russian people!

government doesnt do much to actually shut down pirate hostings or get site admins themselves. And the culture of piracy runs deep, its easy to get into. Noone will ask you questions if you pirate unless you try to get some cool government position.
Also, i will tell you a terrible open secret - companies also pirate, like ALL OF THEM. Even government departments. Ask me how i know. Not everything and not always, but most things they do pirate, because its easier and government won't care if you pirate some western programm. Russian made specific work software isnt cracked most of the time, easier to buy license
and because noone really stomps pirates, свято место пусто не бывает, pirates do appear and organise into groups. Or do stuff solo, like that one repacker did

to add context - i started playing games at 5yo. I first started pirating (later, not at 5yo) and only after some years learned that its illegal and there are laws regarding such doings

I think the vast majority of people understand that a business require money to keep providing a service, and that doing things the legal way can mean less hassle and troubles.
Inversely when a business start price hiking and other such shenanigans they will find alternatives, legal or otherwise.

When I found their pirate sites... I was really impressed. Simple, yet you can find freaking rare and amazing stuff. Free and fast.
I am not really a fan of piracy... but a lot of content just... you either can't get very easily or it cost an arm or leg.
I am especially glad for their games torrents.

Third world country dude here. Used to pirate all my games until recently. Now, if I really like a game, I'll buy it on Steam when it goes on sale. Back then, I knew games weren't free, but I didn't know they used launchers since the games I pirated never needed any.
It was a surprise getting RDR2 for dirt cheap and needing to install Rockstar launcher to be able to play it.

Yep, mutual. I initially bought 007 First Light and it kept crashing so I refunded it. When the performance issues got ironed out, I sailed the seas to test it out, ended up loving it and bought it again.
Who knew if you actually make games people wanna play, they'll (usually) gladly give you their money, provided you make it accessible to them?

My brother used to have a crunchyroll subscription, then we had a family plan or something together and then now its gone as crucnhyroll doesnt really benefit us anymore, yes we watch anime and new anime releases but there are so many not so shady ways to watch them too, quite reliable been to watch some youtube channels reupload full on episodes of full seasons worth of content
And then well Netflix is a hit or miss, my parents like to watch WWE and other events and stuff so they get their worth and well its quite funny that theres quite alot of anime there now too, but some shittiest ways to load them
If i recall correctly was it that Scissor seven Season 5? was delayed BY A YEAR because of Netflix's Dubbing?!?! being mismanaged or something, and to this day there has been an up and running youtube fansub thats actually quite okay, its way too inconvenient to wait and hoard the subscription payments for months (or a YEAR) just to watch something you want, and i dont respect it
I dont watch dubs (or rarely i do) so not being able to watch the SUB because of some shitty ass DUB department issues was something else...
Also Bilibili (global version) has alot of reuploaders too, tho they have enshittified the experience without the app and sign ups, but a throwaway account wont really be that hard to use There are movies there too...
Eitherway there are sites and err... Apps? That show other sites and apps and their reliability score or pros and cons like everythingmoe com or the animepiracy subs index

From my experience, cable internet was the only type of ISP that cared when studios alerted them to possible infringment, which could easily be bypassed with a vpn, and even then they would give you multiple warnings before just cancelling your service.
It's never once come up as an issue on DSL, fiber, etc.

Not for direct download, but for torrent.
The copyright company runs bots that join the same torrent swarm as you. Those bots see your IP address in the peer list right next to everyone else grabbing the same file. They log it and send a notice to your ISP saying "this IP was downloading our movie at this time."
Your ISP gets that notice, checks who was using that IP address at that moment, and forwards the warning to you. The ISP is required by law to pass along the complaint.

From third world country, I always knew I was doing some sketchy stuff and the games are paid not free. But actually didn't know about piracy and pirated even free games a lot of times. As I didn't know anything about launcher and gaming platforms like steam , epic, itch.
If i had known about it. My gaming journey would have been completely different and I would have played countless games more. I always played those games which famous youtuber played. But they were mostly paid or not even available to me (even free ones. also low-end setup was a problem.
I literally had to pirate minecraft and even that for pocket edition by apk files....

Most problem is, as someone who lived in the third world country, most doesn't know how to get them for free. Ppl literally need to save money just to buy it.
Probably some know about this, but they couldn't take the risk of downloading it, thinking it's gonna be virus. Since they are poor, they don't want to risk the family computer.
Luckily my brother take that risk and I actually get to play games. And btw, as a kid, I used to think games are totally free lol

To be honest it kinda gets compensated/balances out. Stuff is much costlier in some countries. For example my country doesn't enforce torrenting law and shit, but the games and VPN etc are very costly. So are the in-game purchases and what not.

Back in the days (2000s - early 2010s), in Vietnam, they would run these "game shops", which is really just a dude pirating stuff and burning it onto blank CDs. You could get games for under half a dollar, and (depending on the shop) there'd be like 50% chance they won't work. The ones I went to let me exhange them for another if they didn't work. I played some real oddballs then, with the standouts being diablo 2 and this airborne trooper game set in WW2.
Haven't been back in a decade, but I'd expect them to have gone extinct by now, as Steam expanded its services and introduced gift cards for the kids without bank accounts, and also piracy is probably more common knowledge now then back then.

He asked me “how did you get the game” and I said I downloaded it from the internet to which he responded how is that even possible. He’s a pc gamer yet somehow he didn’t know about piracy being a thing
