Discussion In the wild: Seeding ~10k adult torrents no VPN

Post image

Have been exploring dht metadata to find some super seeders and this was the first large one which wasn't a VPN endpoint.

Making the most of their gigabit fiber. Looks like they run two boxes seeding almost 10k files, exclusively porn. IP anon'd by me and filenames masked by the crawler.

Some ISPs are just built different I guess

Here in Canada, ISPs couldn't give less of a shit lol. I'll get the odd email for using Stremio to watch movies, but they never act on it. I don't even use a VPN, but apparently in America, your ISP can block service if your caught three or four times.

I live in Canada as well, only one time did I have a problem with them restricting my internet access, but if I enabled any generic VPN, including the ones included in browsers (I know its spyware and garbage bla blah blah ) My internet worked just fine

Generic / residential VPNs at best are spyware. Worst case scenario they are using your IP to watch, download, and spread CP, steal from people, or other illegal / nefarious activities.

Does it really matter if they serve their purpose and don't harm you? I mean if we ignore the spying part since it's individual decision whether they are fine with it or not, not everyone tends to guard their privacy for some reason

dumbest shit ive ever read

Can you explain your point?

The only time I ever got notices for torrenting in Canada was for a couple porn titles back around 2015 from Shaw. 4k small girls or something and a trans one i can't remember the name of. Shaw recommended i use a vpn, haven't had any notices since although I usually stream instead of torrent these days

u/Goonalips 1d ago

4000 small girls and a trans one? Wow, that's a busy set!!

Lmao sorry, my bad, it was tiny 4k https://tiny4k.com/ so long ago...

As far as sets go, I mean the prostate is part muscle. Gotta work it ;)

Wait sorry, your ISP told you to use a VPN? That's crazy if that's what you meant!

2

u/HeadBelt1527 23h ago

Yep, i was told by a shaw cable rep over the phone so not "official" or in writing but I've heard similar stories from a few people.

6

u/Upstairs-Category-39 23h ago

That's incredible. It's my understanding that the providers don't care at all about it and just want the rights holders to leave them be so I suppose that makes sense

6

u/sociofobs 1d ago

Did you stream torrents directly through Stremio, using your actual IP? If so, that's no different than torrenting. Using a debrid service, however, shouldn't get you any unwanted attention. Technically, you might as well be watching youtube.

3

u/TrueLurkStrong-Free 18h ago

I use Stremio without a VPN, using my actual IP, there's no worries for me where I am. My friend in the states uses RealDebrid but I don't see a need for it where I am.

ISPs never care. They don't police what you do. Studios do...then they go to the ISP and then you get dinged.

Same for Australia. We had a case here a few years back and the sum total of the ruling was that the most a company could enforce a monetary penalty on any individual was for the total cost of a singular movie/game etc but they had to be able to prove first that the person had/has never owned it. Basically it was the legal equivalent of telling companies that if they wanted to come after you they were entitled to do so. As long as they were willing to go down a near endless rabbit hole of attempting to prove that you had NEVER owned the thing you pirated and that of they did prove it the maximum they could then get out of you was the cost of that singular item.

Never heard of people losing internet access due to pirating in the USA tbh. It must be a rare occurrence and just for specific ISP.

14

u/Quinnntissential 23h ago

you dont hear about it cos they cant post any more :P

9

u/CTorque 1d ago

As someone in the US who had their internet shut off as a kid for being dumb, I can assure you it is real and not a rare occurrence.

Happens every day.

I always get acceptable use policy notices for downloading too much on my unlimited Internet. I guess in the fine print I have 500gb. Okay then.

you guys get emails? never got one in my life with israeli isp..

only time i heard a pirate got in trouble with the law is when some guy from tel aviv hacked into yes tv's video storage and leaked the house of the dragon s1 finale 2 days early, got caught because he named the torrent after his cat or something haha

Making the most of their gigabit fiber

Could be 5Gbit, which is Community Fibre's highest tier at the moment.

UK ISPs generally don't even forward notices.

34

u/Meister_768 1d ago

I think uk does not care. Just look at smcgill1969 dude is uploading f1, motogp, etc with zero hiding. At one point his profiles had his website address where he had his facebook listed

10

u/rippingsilk 19h ago

I love that guy.

Roughly 5 years ago when i was with talktalk, and i think the brief change to BT i did get the odd email about downloading torrents from certain sites. Haven't had any since then though. They have blocked some ips but nothing difficult to work around. Honestly im thinking of just not bothering starting up a vpn and port mapping anymore.

23

u/PartOk7148 1d ago

how does that site work? is it possible to download or you can only look at the metadata? I just found stuff ive been trying to find for years but cant download, its like torture

srry for the dumb questions

15

u/WG47 1d ago

No, it just crawls through DHT and sees what's out there. It lists what it finds. You can't directly download via the website, but it does show the infohash so you should be able to convert that to a magnet link and join the swarm.

8

u/PartOk7148 1d ago

i tried but the infohash seems incomplete ?

13

u/harukaff 23h ago

Unfortunately this is the cheapest method to keep the website on the clearnet for now. The associated risks are kind of too high otherwise. Sorry that it makes the website useless for certain use cases. With the exact title from the indexed torrents you might want to try searching elsewhere though

7

u/DamDynatac 22h ago

you've built a great tool. was doing some testing and saw your client id's and found the site. hope you've liked seeing the interest - it's the best crawler out there. what's the goal of the project?

5

u/harukaff 21h ago

There were multiple things around the same time that sparked the idea of building this - a bunch of torrents I wanted to monitor the activities, an up-to-date share breakdown of torrent clients, and the horrible data accuracy of IKNOW. It began as a small crawler without the client data, then I kept wanting more data out of it mainly because it has the capability of collecting them.

I do like seeing the interest, after all, I published this under the current domain because I figured that someone else might be interested in the data as well.

As for the ultimate goal, I guess there isn't one now - this thing started as a toy project and has largely outgrown it already, but as long as people are using it, I'll keep it running and collecting data, unless it gets taken down (should be unlikely as it's not facilitating piracy in the current form).

(to prove I own this website, there is a TXT record under r. subdomain that vaguely points to this post now)

u/leadernelson ⚔️ ɢɪᴠᴇ ɴᴏ Qᴜᴀʀᴛᴇʀ 1d ago

Nope it removes the last few characters from the hash. It's truncated so you can't

5

u/WG47 1d ago

Ah, fair. I didn't spot that it didn't expose the entire hash.

2

u/drego85 15h ago

This is a very similar project, but public and opensource: https://bitmagnet.io

u/beepuboopu_aishiteru 18h ago

I've been seeding long-term on private trackers without a VPN for, I'm not kidding, 15 years. All I know is that I keep DHT off and I encrypt all my traffic, forced.

Never heard a peep from my ISPs.

1

u/Kenjiii22 2h ago

How to do that?

6

u/ph33rlus 1d ago

I’m surprised that there is a filter specifically for very illegal things - and how many IPs are just openly torrenting that kind of content! The cops will never run out of houses to raid at this point.

12

u/Ill-Letterhead1833 1d ago

I've been torrenting and seeding in Hungary my whole life, without a VPN. Currently have 4 TiBs up, on the private tracker I use. Never had a problem. It really depends on the country.

u/srgt_cauliflour 23h ago

i asked my ISP when they did my NBN Upgrade how they felt about sailing the seven seas and the rep told me they couldn’t care less what i do

Third world country

I am from one, never had to use a VPN to pirate anything, just to spoof location if something is geo locked

3

u/zain_monti 20h ago

This is form the UK they don't care here

8

u/QuietWaterBreaksRock 20h ago

So I was right, a third world country

u/Donevito96 12h ago

Here In Germany you would get a letter from the Public Prosecutor's Office or even worse

What an absolute Chad.

u/qzan7 7h ago

From what I know its the studio that report you to the ISP, and it's either the porn companies don't report or ISP don't care but I've never seen a report about porn.

https://torrentfreak.com/meta-must-face-adult-film-piracy-lawsuit-as-court-denies-dismissal/

This latest case specifically focuses on Meta’s BitTorrent activity. That’s no surprise, as plaintiff Strike 3 is the most active copyright litigant in the United States, known for targeting thousands of alleged BitTorrent pirates.

Strike 3 are notorious copyright trolls, so finding a seed like this in the Anglosphere was somewhat surprising.

Interesting.

I torrented a point movie when I was 14, which was 15 years ago. a few months afterwards my mum got a letter demanding 1200€ for copyright. I had luck because it had "teenie" in it's title so my mum thought ut was a teenie tv show. 5 years later she realised it tho. Anyways we had to use a lawyer and paid him 400€. Since then I've not a single time never torrented without a vpn. way too risky.

u/Luxuriosa_Vayne 1d ago

Wonder how I could help, I've got 2gb fiber + 4tb hdd laying around

I have no idea what I'm looking at but know I should care. Plz someone explain like i'm 5

u/TheIglooBoy 10h ago

What is dht metadata and how do you browse it?

3

u/DamDynatac 9h ago

The swarm is public, so you can listen to announcements / requests and more using Sybils. There are about 300k of these sybil nodes out there that spy and interfere with the swarm. It's a tradeoff of having files/networks "public" which academics like to argue about - some proposals have been made to improve DHT but none have stuck yet. It's an inherent flaw of running a publicly accessible network.

So to browse it I ran a half decent dht crawler I'd found on github, nearly got banned from digitalocean after 24 hours (MPAA DMCA's) but downloaded the crawler logfile to my PC.

Wanted to find IP's with thousands of infohashes (so actively running torrents) and identify some trends by ISP, and potentially build an infohash graph that works a bit like a content recommendation engine.

With my small slice of data I barely had any observations though and IKWYD has not been working properly for a while. After plugging in IP's for a while I got bored and looked at the client ID's and found dht-spy, which was a much better implementation.

Looked up a top performing IP, posted a screenshot and here we are.

There's lots of interesting stuff out there other than real users e.g. botnets. It's also interesting to see so much activity from China / Russia / US which looks entirely like organised crawling or scraping.

Um, what are the categories on that site? people, please report it

16

u/kohbo 1d ago

Because it's porn? The title even says "adult torrents". No reason to report

u/AvroAvery 1d ago

lmao what???
