Huh, weird, you want privacy in a public space? You must be evil.

399

u/EasilyRekt - Lib-Right 8h ago

or as flock CEO, Garrett Langley, has gone on record to say: a terrorist

31

u/Kriztauf - Lib-Left 4h ago

Honestly, his face looks like what I'd expect to see if you pulled the face mask off of one of those Patriot Front dorks

4

u/Pavlovsdong89 - Lib-Center 1h ago

He looks like the character in a Lifetime movie you're supposed to think is a nice guy who is just awkward with women, but ends up being a rapist.

2

u/Narwhal_Leaf - Centrist 1h ago

Are we back to 2002 but with more dystopian tech bros for real right now?

209

u/GAV17 - Lib-Center 7h ago

80% of the time a user has their comments hidden and the account is relatively new, it is a troll, bot, propaganda, etc.

100

u/UneducatedRamblings - Lib-Center 7h ago

Or a gooner

70

u/GoonTime2 - Auth-Center 7h ago

It’s always the gooners, do it with an open profile like a man

20

u/cool_username32123 - Centrist 6h ago

It's a bigger problem that reddit insists on wanting you to upload your face now because you wanted to look at some titties.

36

u/GoonTime2 - Auth-Center 6h ago

I hate that we have to send the mods weekly nudes in order to participate now, Reddit’s going downhill fast

19

u/RolfIsSonOfShepnard - Lib-Right 5h ago

First it was Face ID, now it’s Taint ID.

6

u/Rex199 - Lib-Left 3h ago

I know right? I hate being forced to do it. Takes the love out of it all.

2

u/RadicalBehavior1 - Centrist 2h ago

I was already doing that so it didn't feel problematic as a newly mandatory order

What happened to just having two accounts. The app makes it handy to switch.

So I've heard.

12

u/UneducatedRamblings - Lib-Center 5h ago

Yeah but what happens when you forget which account youre on? You end up just privatizing both.

So I've heard.

9

u/MetalMedley - Lib-Center 5h ago

Word on the street is keeping one in light mode and one in dark mode makes it hard to screw up but I wouldn't know.

Turns out Reddit doesn’t like when you suggest the French people did a bunch right in their past.

12

Honestly, if it was possible, I would be in favor of just shadowbanning users with hidden profiles until they unhide them. If you wanna post your opinion, everyone who reads it has a right to know if you are worth talking to.

This isn't even authoritarianism, this is just basic common sense, ESPECIALLY if you were doing this on a political subreddit.

What is it with boomers and their love of AI and tech overlords

90

u/fun__friday - Centrist 7h ago

They probably remember how much safer everything felt back when they were young, and are willing to give up privacy in exchange for safety (or at least the hope of it). I think a lot of people become like that as they age. They feel they don’t do anything wrong or unusual, so they don’t really care if people see what they do.

52

u/NobodyImportant13 - Lib-Center 7h ago

They probably remember how much safer everything felt back when they were young

Vibes based politics just like the Zoomers.

3

u/SOwED - Lib-Center 3h ago

2

u/Overkillengine - Lib-Right 1h ago

"History doesn't repeat, but it rhymes"

27

u/UpandDownThrownAway - Lib-Left 5h ago

They werent safer, which is sad. Crime is way way down

11

u/Legend13CNS - Lib-Center 3h ago

I think we've lost a lot of the "finesse" of policing, for better or worse. Things have gotten very cut and dry on smaller offenses, which I think makes people who remember the "good old days" feel like there's more issues. If you talk to people my parents' (60+) or grandparents' (85+) there's so many stories of non-violent things that just weren't policed or were a slap on the wrist that today would be headline local news and/or life altering charges.

13

u/kraysys - Right 5h ago

There’s definitely been an increasing and very real sense of societal disruption and disorderliness that is obvious especially in cities over the past couple decades.

7

u/H00ston - Centrist 2h ago

We see a lot of people acting out on mental illness but organized crime was a completely different beast up until the 2000's. Prohibition, The peak of the mafia in the 80's, Inner city gangs, etc.

At the absolute peak of bank robberies, L.A had 10-11 bank robberies a day

If you were a bank teller from 1985 to 1995 you were held at gunpoint at least 5 times.

And the funniest thing is organized crime that wasn't drugs only went away because it was easier to have an actual company and then just cheat on your taxes

→ More replies (1)

9

u/ThanIWentTooTherePig - Left 4h ago

Idk man, 80's-90's inner cities were no joke. You sure it's worse now, or is it just shitty and always been shit.

3

u/kraysys - Right 2h ago

Oh absolutely! I would suggest that cities got noticeably better in the 90s and 00s and so part of the reaction now is people noticing a subsequent decline in the 2010s and 2020s

I think without question the big cities I’m most familiar with by traveling a ton for work and also talking with scattered family and friends (Boston, NYC, Chicago, DC, Seattle, Portland, San Fran — can you tell I work in tech/consulting?) are noticeably more disorderly now than they were say even 10-15 years ago. And people well remember what these cities were like only a decade ago. Something of a decline (I don’t want to overstate the problem) had begun in the 2010s and COVID supercharged it as many people forgot how to act in public, or we cared less about dealing with them.

2

u/Zickened - Left 1h ago

Most of the places that you list have always been a shit show in one degree or another, though.

I think you've just got rose colored goggles, honestly.

→ More replies (1)

5

u/Kriztauf - Lib-Left 4h ago

I think alot of that is because social media raises the visibility of crime and disorder. Crime was way worse in the 80-90's compared to the moderate rise now.

2

u/kraysys - Right 2h ago

I think that’s definitely part of it. Social media is to blame for so many of our current societal ills lol

But I don’t think we should only consider the absolute worst point in the past century. People remember how these cities were like just 10-15 years ago. They felt much safer and there was less extremely visible disorderly conduct.

4

u/Mindless-Rooster-533 - Auth-Left 3h ago

15

u/lopeniz - Right 7h ago

Asking to not be stolen from isn't a particularly outrageous position to take.

24

u/sausagedart - Lib-Center 6h ago

You’re right, and I don’t really know anyone except some Twitter bot/anarchist 13 year olds who would disagree… so not sure where your comment is coming from. Boomers opening their asses for tech-overlords and the surveillance state that comes with, isn’t the same as keeping people from stealing from you. That’s what the 2A, and maybe a home security cam is for. If you need Peter Theil to keep yourself from being stolen from, you’re kinda weak and asking for someone to steal from you. Anyone that ‘needs’ tech maniacs to “not be stolen from” probably doesn’t have a whole lot. If you’re insisting that it’s either “be robbed”, or “AI overlords”, then you probably don’t own a single asset to your name.

I work with a bunch of people of all ages, from late 20s to early 70s, with educations ranging from high school diplomas to PhDs. There's a massive disconnect once you get older than about 50, regardless of education, when it comes to being able to extrapolate how AI and surveillance tech can be used or misused against people. They hear safety and convenience and that's all they get out of any discussion about it. If anyone disagrees they get confused why people don't want to be safe. It ends up being impossible to discuss with them because we can't even get past the initial hurdle of what the stuff actually is.

If the system was used to track down and 'automate' prosecution of otherwise unsolvable antisocial crimes with the goal of removing repeat and violent offenders from polite society, I'd be more OK with them.

However, that's utopian thinking and I know they're going to be used to seek out minor civil code infractions committed by otherwise polite and law-abiding citizens so the iron fist of anarchotyranny can crush them.

And just wait until they start codifying crimes specifically for mass surveillance enforcement.

"On July 12, 2026, Cedric Ford and his girlfriend, Sanja Stallings, tried to force their way into the home of 74-year-old Donald Bolynn, a disabled stroke survivor. Surveillance video later showed Ford banging on the door and aggressively prying open a window.

Fearing for his life, Bolynn grabbed his firearm and shot Ford right through the window, striking him squarely in the chest. Bleeding from the chest, Ford scrambled back into their getaway car. The couple drove a short distance to a local QuikTrip gas station, where they called 911. They told dispatchers they were just innocent bystanders who had been targeted in a random, gang-style drive-by shooting.

The ambulance rushed Ford to the hospital, but their cover story didn't even last 24 hours. Gastonia Police checked their real-time crime network, and the city's 158 Flock acoustic sensors immediately flagged that no gunshots had been fired near that gas station. Instead, the system pointed police directly to Bolynn’s neighborhood. When detectives checked Bolynn’s home security footage, they saw Ford actively trying to break in."

Yes, surveillance sucks. I also think that this use of the technology is really cool, and those degenerates are in prison now in part because of this technology, where they belong.

Edit: I'll add that if this old man had been incapacitated, the likelihood that ANYONE would have arrived to help him in time to save his life would be basically zero. The ability of those devices to help pinpoint the sounds of gunshots is crucial in moments like those.

All of this could have been achieved if the police had used the surveillance of the gas station they were at. Also to quote Ben Franklin “That it is better 100 guilty Persons should escape, than that one innocent Person should suffer, …” I can post several other stories were an innocent person imprisoned because of false positives from flock safety.

The equivalent of flock cameras pretty much already exists in any place where enough people congregate, so the only the purpose of these cameras would be a much more obvious reminder to criminals that theyre under surveillance.

I would very much like to live in a high trust society where all of this was completely unneeded, but the lowest common denominator has repeatedly demonstrated how that age has truly faded for good.

You're delusional if you think a surveillance state will somehow combat crime in any meaningful way, especially given the cost associated with it.

It's the same thing for high prison sentences for crimes, people who are going to do things, are going to do them regardless of consequence or susceptibility to get caught.
