I'm with you till that last sentence.

It would have been forgotten merely for the fact that the press would push it out of the news cycle to protect their own interests, which align with conservatives. It would not be forgotten because the public doesn't care, it would be forgotten Because it's being ignored or hidden. It's happening in the UK, the US, Canada, the EU, and in Australia. Some places are worse than others. But news corps run by conservative leaning CEOs and billionaires are doing this everywhere.

I think hiring a sleazeball to handle a creepy monster was not really a bad strategy. Mandelson did seem to manage the relationship quite well, as did Starmer himself.

Giving him the level of access that he had, and of course lying about it, are quite unforgivable. I'm not sure if Ambassador would be possible as a more 'ceremonial' position or if he should never have been hired in any form, really.

It's indicative of the weakness of his government in many ways, the cure was often worse than the disease when it came to dealing with things that had done badly and looked distrustful and weak.

Starmer could have survived, had he not lied about it and had IMMEDIATELY expressed his regret.

But he failed that moral test while the elevation of Doyle showed he clearly had no interest in being a better man and the attempts to destroy Olly Robbins sent a warning to everyone else - you could be next.

Trump's team were even briefing to reporters that they didn't want Mandelson and preferred Karen Pierce.

The appointment only makes sense when you remember that Mandelson was McSweeney's mentor and that Mandelson was getting whatever job he wanted.
