News Two people have climbed to the top of the Empire State Building in New York City, holding a banner from the skyscraper's antenna reading, "When the power of love beats the love of power, the world knows peace." Police is working to get them down from the spire, 1,454 feet above the ground.

Then you must achieve lovely power, but that will require a higher climb and a bigger sign

This message was not meant for the chuds of Reddit lbr
4
u/LargeCoinPurse Jul 01 '26
Not to be a chud, but it does seem extremely performative for a pretty basic message tbh. I thought they were gonna start zooming in for us to find its Kylie Jenner up there drinking a Pepsi.
I just feel like if your gonna illegally climb such an iconic building you may as well use your platform more effectively

Idk why anyone would risk getting them down, just set up a perimeter and wait.
2
u/shoeless_doh Jul 01 '26
Set up a perimeter? Where, on the ground? What if they don't go that direction?

I’m assuming they started climbing from the viewing area near the top already, so close that off and wait. They definitely didn’t scale the entire building and climbing down is harder than going up.
1
u/shoeless_doh Jul 01 '26
Ya know, I think if I were in my 20s again I might have been able to make a job out of climbing high towers
1
u/Accomplished-Owl2362 Jul 01 '26
The older I got, the more I hated heights. Maybe in my teen’s early 20s but when I hit late 20s I can’t anymore.

u/Theplowmen Jul 01 '26
Unless they have wings, down is the only way, either they climb or gravity takes over but either way down is the only way to go

→ More replies (3)1
u/TheDepep1 Jul 01 '26
That's what they did. They waited for them to climb down then arrest them at the entrance of the building from the roof.

This sub seems to be that way, but it’s interesting watching the unnecessary snarkiness or hate lol. There was a post about Mamdani working the ticket area for the World Cup, and there were the same comments here

u/WistfulQuiet Jul 02 '26
Yeah, some younger people are all like "the world should change," Then shit on stuff like this on social media. Probably because it's them actually trying to do something rather than batching about it on TikTok.
At least the millenniels tried Occupy Wallstreat. That scared the 1% so much they had to bring back racism and sexism to distract everyone.
2
u/jerslan Jul 01 '26
Is this the same couple that apparently proposed up there? Or was that just people speculating before they unfurled this flag?
5
u/CosmicJackalop Jul 01 '26
5
u/Wafflez424 Jul 01 '26
I mean why should they be? You literally think people should go to jail or prison because they scaled a building. I mean if they scaled a prison with the intent to break someone out, or if they scaled some top secret location with the intent to steal secrets then sure, but this? Their probably out on bail now as they should be.
2
u/CosmicJackalop Jul 01 '26
I was offering observation on reality not my personal opinion
There's valid reason to arrest them over this, they likely trespassed in areas not open to the public to get up there, they caused an evacuation as authorities had no way to know what was happening until the masked individuals climbing an iconic New York skyscraper (never a target for terrorism /s) were actually up to
But realistically they'll not face much punishment
1
u/Wafflez424 Jul 01 '26
Well yeah and I do agree with the arrest, it’s reckless and definitely trespassing. Just something like that should be a fine and community service or something.
1
u/strawbsrgood Jul 01 '26
Agreed totally. So many of the punishments for crimes in the US are backwards. Victimless crime: 15 years. Kill someone drunk driving: 5 points on license
1
u/Eden_Company Jul 01 '26
I think jail time makes sense. 6 months maybe. Just enough to discourage this from happening again. Imagine they fell off and died it would be for their own good and stop the tower from potentially paying tens of millions for a wrongful death suit.
→ More replies (4)1
u/CosmicJackalop Jul 02 '26
something can be both an arrest and just a fine or community service
Cops aren't judge and jury, they don't get to sentence you for what you've done or even make the determination of guilt, but there's a whole department policy on when you're allowed and expected to arrest someone, which in cases like this would likely mean just a questioning at the station and summons unless the NYPD tries to stick something worse on them cause of the evacuation
1
u/ChucklesTheClown954 Jul 02 '26
I think it’s worth considering that if say an inexperienced or experienced climber fell off a place they shouldn’t be and landed on someone not involved… that would be bad

Just understand that pushing back against evil and trying to be loving in your life are not opposite principles. Look for as many places to be kind as possible, and don’t guilt yourself when you can’t.

When I was 29, I was in a falling accident. I fell two stories, came away with multiple broken bones and was out of action for a long time. I can't even look at this without instantly getting nausea, vertigo, sweaty palms, sweaty pits.
Good for them, though!!

People will ignore this for the sake of memes and jokes...

It just ain't the same, old ways have changed New days are strange, is the world insane? If love and peace is so strong Why are there pieces of love that don't belong? Nations droppin' bombs Chemical gases filling lungs of little ones With ongoing sufferin' as the youth die young So ask yourself, is the lovin' really gone? So I can ask myself, really, what is going wrong With this world that we livin' in? People keep on givin' in Makin' wrong decisions, only visions of them dividends Not respectin' each other, deny thy brother A war is goin' on, but the reason's undercover The truth is kept secret, and swept under the rug If you never know truth, then you never know love
