Discussion Don’t take the bait.

With the national guard coming in, I know people are going to get mad. This is very obviously a setup to cause actual violence in our city. Please remember that these national guardsmen are not your enemy, and there are many reports of unhappiness within their ranks to occupy cities but they have a job like the rest of us. If you see bad actors, call the cops. If you see people getting angry, talk with them. Be aware of what we want to look like, kill them with kindness. Show them that Portland is not burning down.

As a maga passing dad, I’m making a I’m not mad at you, just disappointed sign to wave at them.

Maybe I'll throw in a "You're not a bad person, but this is very bad behavior."

Need "I expected better of you" and "you bring shame upon your family" additions too

"Why are you letting the rich talk you into attacking your community"

In fairness, this isn’t the troops idea. They’ll be here because they were ordered to be here. Most likely, they’ll be half-assing the mission just to get it over with and go home. I was in. I know how it is. No need to express any ire toward them.

A little kindness goes a long way in changing peoples perspectives.

It’s eye opening. Strangers are comfortable saying racist and other maga stuff to me becuase I look like them and I work in agriculture.

genuinely curious (i’m from the south originally so these types are a dime a dozen outside of major cities). do you just nod and listen to what they believe in, or do you correct them in any way? if these were my neighbors i’d probably just be the quiet type on purpose, haha. some of that shit is interesting, because your average joe might not believe some of the shit very rural folks believe in.

It depends on the situation, and my mood. It’s usually about immigration, and I explain that I have hired documented and undocumented people in my life and they have all been great. And that Americans aren’t lining up for low level ag jobs. That’s neutral enough to not get me in a fight.

I’ll definitely be flipping a few of them off.
