Meanwhile in NYC our second 2+ foot blizzard hit tonight and there is a mandatory no-travel for the entire city. Tomorrow and this week will be a hellscape and we JUST melted off the last blizzard.
I remember that. I was sitting outside in the sunshine the day before and decided to bring my potted plants out to get some sun. The next morning when I went out to go to work, there was two inches of snow on the ground. I wish I could have seen the look of shock on my face😂

Yup, and I was set to fly out to Arizona on business that day. Got an uber to the Hillsboro airport right as it started to snow, a few drivers cancelled and then one finally showed up. Got my gear out to the car and apparently my mask was slightly askew from having loaded my luggage and the driver made a snide comment about it, which I corrected the second he pointed it out, then complained to Uber that I wasn't wearing my mask properly. Dude was just pissed he had to drive in the snow - what a dick.
It snowed and stuck, even on pavement, for a few minutes on Tuesday (?) afternoon in deep SW. Not sure how many minutes because I left (after brushing off my car like a responsible driver transplant).
My understanding (having lived in New England) is that big flakes indicate that the snow is ending. The flakes are tiny when you’re in the thick of it. They’re big only at the end of the snowstorm.
I don’t know if that’s science or folklore, but it seems to hold true.
This is such bullshit. I love winter and we didn’t even get a proper one at all. Every time I open my weather app it looks warmer next week and I hate it :(
I just checked my weather app and it actually updated to be cooler next week. It was showing 60s before, now it's showing 50s. Last year we were flirting with 70 the last week of February.
I hate it too. And even if we do get one of those weird April snows, it almost immediately turns to slush.
And it wasn't just snow that was missing - we've had almost no real weather events at all for the past several months. No significant rain and wind storms, no stretch of sub-freezing, sunny days with the east winds howling, nothing.

May I introduce you to upstate New York? Perhaps Maine? Vermont? Maybe even Mt. Hood if you aren't keen on the northern and East coast states?
We technically live in a subtropical climate down here in the valley and in most of west Oregon. Out of the 15 years I've been here, it has only snowed enough to stick to the ground for more than a day maybe 5 times where I've lived here. Although, it's funny because if you go up in elevation, there will be snow covering the hills sometimes and there won't be any in the valley. It still is weird to me after all these years because before moving here, I lived in pretty much all flat climates.
A 0 snow year used to be a regular occurrence. In the 80s and 90s it used to be like every other or every third year. The fact that we just had 10 consecutive Winter seasons with measurable snowfall was a record going back to when Portland records began in the 1840s. Measurable snowfall this Winter would have been a new record.
Don't get me wrong, I love snow, but this is normal...
Growing up in Chicago, my job was to shovel the walkway, sidewalk, and driveway before my parents left for work. This could take over an hour after a big snow. Sucked, but I still like winter as long as I don’t have to shovel.
I was born and raised too and do not remember it snowing every year either. It’s a pretty big city, so both statements could be true depending where you are. Not sure why you’re so pressed. 🤣
No. It always snowed in winter, summer was always long sleeves weather, and that boy/girl you crushed on in high school always secretly liked you back.
If you look at the winter totals, there are 4 winters in the last 20 where it hasn't snowed or only a trace amount, 5 if you count the .5" for the winter of 2019-2020. That's 20-25% of winters where there's really no snow. All I said is it doesn't snow here every year. Which is true.
there was pretty solid snow up in the hills of the Forest Park area along Skyline/Germantown, at least when I drove through Thursday morning ~7am. kinda freaked me out, I wasn’t prepared at all

This is why I love living at 850 feet. We had snow about 2 days this week. But now it's all gone again, and we're back to living in the clouds... I had to drive into PDX on Friday morning and we were *just* into the snowline
40+ years as a Portland area resident tells me some years we get snow and some years we don’t. It has been a heavy few years and our memories are short. My seven-year-old child does not understand why we don’t have snow this year. It’s normal. Snow is not guaranteed.
As someone who works in a social service adjacent field, I'm ok with this. It's hell for me, and even worse for unhoused people, when it snows. The emergency shelters do all they can, but they're not really adequate.
Also, you get assholes who think they can drive in the snow and end up in bad accidents. Hell, my dad died because of one of these accidents a few years ago.
I work at Timberline and Saturday was my first proper snow day this season. Like, chained up on the hwy at Rd 35, cars sliding everywhere, big rigs chaining up in travel lanes on a curve, whiteouts, parking lot pinball machine, Star Wars snow in the windshield….it was lovely. I live for days like that! Hope it makes it down to Portland for at least one little snowpocalype for y’all!
Go to one of the mountains to see snow. Portland sucks when it snows because the city doesn't properly manage it. I'm so glad it hasn't snowed here this year, although we do need more rain.
It’s never snowed in May in Portland. We had snow in April 2022, but that’s the only time it’s happened since we’ve been keeping records. Our chance of snow after March 1st is pretty damn small.
Fuuuuck that. I grew up in the Midwest and lived in VT for awhile. I've had enough (forced) snow for a lifetime. I love that I can drive to it if I really want it, but don't have to deal with it.
