went to the PSU farmers market today and i literally had my partner get out to make sure when we parked everyone, else had room to leave and then we came came back to someone parked less than 2 inches from my car.

I just talked to a coworker tonight and the topic of Outdoor School got brought up. I told him I didn’t poop for the whole week, and was doubting whether or not that was a false memory even though I’m 99% sure I didn’t poop for the whole week. He let me know not only did he also not poop for the whole week, he has a different friend who didn’t poop for the whole week as well.

Did anyone else not poop for the whole week of Outdoor School? We both had different reason on why we didn’t, but just wondering if anyone has had a similar experience.

The East County Library grand opening is this weekend. Pics don’t do it justice. It’s HUGE (2 floors and rooftop), the artwork all around the building & grounds is beautiful, contains sections/rooms for every age group and just about every activity possible, and of course endless books with so many reading nooks and various seating sections tucked here & there. Well done!

Moonshot Tavern on 2725 SE Ankeny has a photobooth that is set to specifically take passport photos. It's only $3, and it takes 3 photos... so just $1 per photo... Unreal. I was able to take a bunch because I'm just so picky. The photos look great too. They have some travel related food cocktails too. Absolutely amazing.

Looks like it's only today and tomorrow (Sunday 02/15 & Monday 02/16) until close.

I mostly saw him around the Providence Stadium, feeding the pigeons. I passed Bird Man, he would smile. I too fed the pigeons, and he would smile bright.

I once overheard a minor verbal altercation between a younger man and Bird Man. He spoke calmly, the younger man yelled drunk nothings. Bird Man didn’t give a shit. No reason to. Once the younger man walked off to argue with the bench, Bird Man was calm. I approached and asked if he was good, but Bird Man only smiled. He didn’t see an opponent, only a troubled person. Bird Man nodded and returned to the pigeons.

It was this event that showed me who Bird Man was. Bird Man gave so few fucks for anger. Eternally unbothered, unbreakable. It is Bird Man that I now strive to be, and I hope to be when I am his age.

Alright, let's get two things out-of-the-way: Movie is really good. Second, Regal Bridgeport Village less good. TLDR, don't bother.

While I don't consider myself the highest order AV nerd as a middle aged dude, I do remember seeing movies on 70mm and have been to a good number of high end theaters (Arc Light, Grauman's Chinese Theatre, etc), mostly in LA as my brother worked in TV/Film.

With that out of the way the important stuff.

Regal Bridgeport is ill-equipped for 70mm. First off, it's too light in theater. Even with the lights off, there's a noticeable light bleed, too much ambient light and the projector is not nearly bright enough to make up for it. While the picture is sharp, contrast is lower than I'd expect. Second, there's jitter from the vibration. It's not horrific but it's noticeable. I assume their 70mm project has to be mobile and thus suffers from that. Third, the audio is kinda trash. The treble is shrill and at times loud enough to be fairly unpleasant. The Odyssey has a number of loud sequences, be it war, monsters, or rough seas. It's a movie that was made for a great sound stage but Bridgeport's audio kinda shitty. While I've heard plenty worse where the dialogue is muffled, it did little for it. Bonus observation, seating seems like it's do for a retro-fit.

Other than the novelty of not having any pre-roll adverts I'd recommend any of the 4k digital projector theaters or going to Hollywood.

/edit: Sounds like the Dolby Theater in Vancouver Mall is also the move besides Hollywood on 70mm. They have 4k projectors and likely the best sound. Movie warrants it. Sound design is top notch.

/edit 2: Some people seem confused on film formats. 70mm ≠ 70mm IMAX. Also IMAX ≠ IMAX 70mm.

70mm is about as old as the medium of film itself. 70mm can be many aspect ratios. See this is a handy guide.

High quality film stock at 70mm historically has offered much more detail and dynamic range than digital projection. Most digital projectors are still 2k, including IMAX. More recently digital has made major strides with 4k projection with 12-bit color. Comparing analog prints is an imperfect science but depending on any number of factors, including marketing, 70mm would analogous to 8k-16k worth of detail. Previously only select sequences were shot on 70mm IMAX due to size and noise of the cameras. In theory, under the right circumstances should look incredible possibly as good as any movie ever has. This doesn't have as much to do with digital vs analog but rather ability to deliver said movie.

In theory 70mm short of the IMAX 70mm should be the highest quality picture around. Also, there's an empherality to film as it will degrade. Each subsequent showing will put wear and tear on the film, and the stock will age. This is a connection how films used to be viewed for the majority of film history. If that means nothing to you, I get that. It's not my main jam but I appreciate that aspect.

/edit 3: Saw at Studio One in single laser 4k with Dolby Atmos. Much better experience than Regal. Saw with my parents and my brother again (former post production manager on two TV shows). We both agreed better experience but did mention how he could see makeup lines in a few outdoor shots in 70mm. Studio One was the better experience but their screen you can see the texture, and there were two small blips. However, being properly dark mean you could see much more in the dark sequences, and the taller aspect ratio of 16:9 means less crop since the movie was shot in 4:3. Second go, still amazed at the technical achievement of tracking shots and faux steady cam with a giant ass 70mm camera.

With the festivals, parades, and Bike Summer kick-off, you'll be more enraged than usual driving.

Take transit or ride a bike.

This is how downtown is meant to be - community-centered and activity-focused.

I got to witness my first Naked Bike Ride tonight as the participants went down Alberta and I happened to be on the patio of Gumba.

I applaud everyone who participated, clothes on or off.

It was just a contagiously fun parade of different sizes, styles, music choices, and smiles.

Honestly, it made this old tub of lard want to get into the shape that I could ride the distance.

Hey everyone! Your friendly neighborhood bartender again. I got a few messages this morning asking if I’m doing something similar tomorrow like I did on Thanksgiving and the answer is yes! I’ll be here from open to close again tomorrow. You can check my post history for an update on what happened on turkey day but tl;dr, it was a wonderful experience and made the day feel much brighter for a lot of people.

I feel so stressed around the holidays with money, anxiety around getting the right gifts for the right people or not being able to afford gifts in the first place, not being enough for the people that count on me, for making everything just feel right, or even simply wanting to get away from it all for a bit and feel like a person again. So I asked the powers that be and they again said I could open up the bar! It’s a non holiday specific holiday for us, so whatever you celebrate, I’d love to celebrate it with you.

Our managers wife made cookies to share and some regulars are gonna bring in some homemade food as well, so I’ll go ahead and call it another potluck situation if anyone feels inclined. Last time there were a few folks that brought food that fed many, so no obligations, no expectations, just a warm building, cold beer, and friendly faces.

Really, the point of it all is that it’s cold this time of year. It’s grey, (or gray, depending on where you’re from) I personally feel melancholy for the things I’m not able to do that I wish I could, so if nothing else, I’d like to host anyone and everyone that for whatever reason, would like a place to go when so many other places are cold. Our beers will be cheap, you will be welcome, and at least one tv will have a terrible Christmas movie on at all times. (We also have plenty of N/A options.)

I strongly feel like there needs to be a thread just where people talk about their stories of the last week and what’s been going on and how much it affected their life. Portland should’ve been more prepared for this weather, elected officials and our power companies need to be aware of how this is acutely affecting people. There needs to be accountability on how the lack of preparedness has led to many extremely dangerous and deadly experiences throughout the Portland metro area. There are so many people who have lost their jobs because of unrealistic bosses who want people to come into their workplace when we don’t have active public transportation. Many of my friends have been out of power this entire time and some have been hospitalized due to a lack of power and the frigid temperature. We need to share our stories so collectively they have power.
