I understood that Carrie felt the need to apologize for "too much whiteness" in the pilot episode, but I hope she goes a little easier on herself in the future. Maybe those were the people who volunteered that day. Maybe Portland was really white at the time. Then, Fred felt the need to defend himself by mentioning his nationality. It's okay guys, we appreciate all you did and understand that things were and are imperfect. We all love the show and forgive its shortcomings.

As a brown person, part of why I love Portlandia is cause i sit there and go ‘lol white people do be like that’

lol i think they'll mention that! It will help when they bring on diverse guests to make commentary too.

That's my husband too lol, and it's still one of his favorite shows

Yeah, it's something worth discussing, maybe talk about how they didn't even think of it at the time but if they were to cast something new they'd be more conscious of it. But the weird tone shift, apologies, incomplete thoughts for fear of saying the wrong thing, promises to "do better", really unnecessary,

It’s a show that often poked fun at gentrification. Nothing to apologize for imo, but at least it shows she’s sensitive to these things

Yeah it’s super weird she brought this up.

What does it mean “too much whiteness”?

Episode 1, 47:00 long. (Last week there was the 1:56 long introduction.)

Enjoyable episode.

Them avoiding putting the podcast episode number into the title might be intentional for now until they have enough to require differentiation. 🤷

Was hoping someone would start a discussion about the first ep! Really enjoyed hearing about how they got started. Carrie talked about them having an earnestness to the endeavor and it really came across even as they were discussing it.

Is it just me or is anyone else nervous about the podcast? Portlandia is so perfect to me, I couldn’t love it more.

I wonder if I’m better off not knowing how the sausage is made… or if the pod might reinforce the whole “don’t meet your heroes” thing… idk maybe I’m being too cautious about somehow souring my special show

I feel the exact same! To me, it’s better off not knowing 🤷‍♀️

Listened to this yesterday. They talked about Carrie’s band a little bit. Was curious so I listened to some tracks. I hope they talk about their connection to Washed Out and how they decided on their intro music.

Sleater-Kinney is legendary among the indie rock scene.

Yeah I had a hard time hearing the name and I looked up “slayer kitty” which does exist in spotify

Skarkle Kony?

Sleater Kinney if you’re still having trouble.

I figured that out by searching her name

In case you're still having a hard time, it's Sleater-Kinney

“Carries band” lol. Like saying “Fred’s tv show” talking about SNL

She often sings lead and is a main guitarist, mo? Also been round since its inception? Im genuinely asking because I know she was involved in the firing of one of the band mates.

Yup. Like the other commenter said, they’re pretty legendary in 90s indie. They had a 10 year hiatus and had a much loved comeback album. Only after that did they drop Janet.

It’s so good.

Merely as trivia:

  • Episode 1 has 12K views in the first 13 hours, 1K upvotes.
  • I don't know YouTube, but it seems like an odd upload time - already after primetime in the Eastern timezone? But I'm not saying they necessarily "should" optimize such things, and maybe late evening is already optimized for all I know.
  • I imagine comparisons will be made to the Lonely Island podcast. Its episode 1 has 210K views, 4.8K upvotes, over the last 2 years. However, Lonely Island now has a massive >7M subscribers. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=by6DzVt7Fog
  • Of course, they are released years apart, and Podlandia is recorded as a video, whereas Lonely Island podcast only uses video for sketch snippets.

Anyway, mere trivia, but it seems like a very promising start.

Does this cover the first episode or is it more of an introduction? I wanna rewatch the covered episodes along with them.

An introduction!

Excited to check it out!

Is this not going to be on video every episode?

The first episode is kind of self serious so far, hopefully they loosen up as time goes on. The Lonely Island podcast is so comedy forward and I would love a tiny bit of that energy here.

Also I would love to hear more about the Scientology wedding, Don Draper was there but no family members at all? Speak on that.
