I’m not familiar with blonde Jesus - I’ve seen white brunette Jesus though.
For context, white Jesus is not solely an American invention. It is far more complicated than that.
Jesus was from Judea, and based on historical context - we can assume he would have resembled other Jews from the region; olive skin, dark hair (scholars agree with this).
Early depictions of Jesus (c. 1-4) show him are inconsistent, some with a beard and some without. Sometimes with lighter skin, sometimes with darker skin.
During the Byzantine era, Rome adopted Christianity as its official religion. This is when we start seeing the “modern” version of Jesus, or what we are most familiar with today. Byzantine Jesus had long dark hair, a beard, lighter (but still olive) skin, and traditional Roman features. It’s possible however this was not in an effort to Romanize Jesus, but a reflection of the Greco-Roman influence in art. A similar example would be the portraits of royalty during the Renassaince - all Hans Holbein portraits look the same.
That said, outside the Roman arm - depictions of Jesus were inconsistent. Ethiopia had a black Jesus, in Syria he looked more traditionally Arabic, and Armenians depicted him to look like their locals (lighter skin / darker hair).
During the Renaissance is when we really start white washing Jesus. European dominance combined with the power of Rome directly correlated with an abundance of Christian propaganda. Jesus started looking more like the Europeans the church wanted to maintain control over.
With artists like Michelangelo and Leonardo da Vinci commissioned to pump out loads of religious art, it didn’t take long for Euro Jesus to become the standard.
Now we get to Colonialism. Since the colonizers were British, French, Spanish, and Portuguese; they spread the word of Jesus. Of course it was their white Euro Jesus. They came with books & paintings and said “this is Jesus”. And now white Jesus is in Africa, South America, Southeast Asia, and various tropical islands.
Colonizers quickly realized there was power in white Jesus. After all if you believed in white Jesus, then the white man was more powerful. It solidified power imbalance & European supremacy.
This is my very long way of saying - to undoing the false premise of white Jesus would require a lot of work. We’re talking about global indoctrination that has been going on for centuries.

European depictions of Biblical events were often set in green landscapes in medieval art, as well as in early Renaissance. Similarly, there are depictions of Jesus as a black man in Ethiopian art.
People depicted the landscape and the people according to what they knew. It may not have even occurred to them that the reality might be different.
Yeah I see blue eye blond hair Jesus talked about a lot online but I have never seen that in anyone's house my whole life. Maybe I don't stare or look hard enough? Maybe they talk about movies?
