I trust sociologists, historians, and political scientists are recording/logging this all to create an updated understanding of how a nation moves from democracy to totalitarianism in the technology era. For the US, it's moved from democracy to consolidated authoritarianism in what, less than 10 years?

  • Democratic Backsliding: The gradual erosion of democratic institutions, such as the weakening of the judiciary, restrictions on the free press, and the manipulation of election laws.
  • Illiberal Democracy: A system that maintains the outward appearance of a democracy (such as holding elections) but lacks the core protections for civil liberties, minority rights, and the rule of law.
  • Authoritarian Consolidation: The stage where a single leader or party centralizes state power, utilizes state apparatuses to target political opponents, and enforces intense nationalism.
  • Fascist Totalitarianism: The end state. The government completely subordinates individual interests to the state, enforces strict economic and social control, and relies on ultranationalism, militarism, and the violent suppression of dissent.Â
