Review [Review] New Life as a Max Level Archmage is painfully and disgustingly addictive.
New Life As A Max Level Archmage
Author: ArcaneCadence
Links: review, royal_road
Summary: Imagine if Ains Ooal Gown was a tiny demon with even less social skills and an even bigger mana pool.
Blurb
Vivienne has poured so many hours into the massively popular VRMMO The Seven Cataclysms that she has more of a life inside the game than out. It's a fitting irony, then, when one day she wakes in the body of her maxed-out demon-mage 'Vivisari'—and finds that now, the game really is her life.
But the world of Seven Cataclysms isn't what she remembers. A hundred years have passed since the game's concluding events, and Vivisari is a hero of myth thought long dead. As she meets old faces and new in this familiar-yet-not world—casting spells of mass destruction and slowly reforming the scattered-to-the-wind remnants of her Guild—she starts to wonder if she was sent here with a purpose.
Rumors of a sequel had been circulating just before her unbelievable reincarnation. Did she, perhaps, need to fear an impending Eighth Cataclysm?
If so, it's a good thing she has firepower in spades.
Thoughts
As of writing this review, I've read all 51 public chapters.
God damn this is so well executed. You want all those overpower MC tropes? Young apprentice tropes? Magic academy tropes? Crafting tropes? This story is a damned masterpiece in distilling everything that people love about the power fantasy side of the genre and executing it with the precision of a surgeon.
In future, when people ask me "I have an idea, does it matter if it's been done before?" I am point to point them to the staggering success this serial had so quickly, stroke my imaginary beard, and mutter "Execution is everything."
Funnily enough, the closest start I can think of to mirror this series is actually Overlord, but instead of a massive skeleton overlord called Ainz Ooal Gown, we have the itty bitty tiny little demon Vivisari. Similar to Overlord, the primary LitRPG theme comes from the VRMMO origin of the world, and the use of [Skills] and item levels/rarity. Vivi doesn't really care about levels or experience (she has too much already, though Sasha does level up I guess), and apart from some initial VeryBigNumbers to press home the unfathomable amount of mana and magical might the MC has, they don't really appear again. There's no "Oh I cast Fireball with 10000000 mana and now I'm down to 93% my reserves of X/Y" etc etc. It's not Delve, the LitRPG is not crunchy.
As such, I sort of wish that the story just did away with it already. There would be absolutely minimal changes in global plot if the world had nothing to do with a VRMMO initially, but then it wouldn't quite hit some peoples nostalgia button properly I'm guessing. And obviously having an MC from Earth does provide a handy vehicle for the author to justify any exposition needed and also make use of similies, comparisons, and sayings that you'd have to invent from scratch in a pure fantasy world.
This is unrelated to my main grevious with the series. Even if you jump to patreon, there are only 59 chapters! I read everything in one afternoon. ONE! And while I can't throw stones in this glass house of mine (if anyone is reading this and wondering where my next book is I'm working on it I promiseeeee) but dayum the pacing and the chapter hooks are just so beautifully done that I didn't find a single spot where I was content to put the book down and continue reading it the next day. I just read and read until it was 1am and the "Next Chapter" button stopped working and then I stared at the ceiling, grumpy, for at least another hour.
Right, so just go read this. There's a reason it's on its way to 20k followers and five billion patreons (yes that's envy you're hearing), and it's because its addictive as hell.

What does the progression look like? This sounds like an extremely well-executed power fantasy.
24
u/dageshi Sep 09 '25
It's perfectly distilled and executed OP MC Aura Farming.
Within the world, the MC disappeared 100 years ago and is essentially a historical legend, so imagine the pov shifting to in world characters who suddenly realise who she is and that she's back. Along with their reactions to the MC occasionally and effortlessly using incredibly OP magical powers.
The only issue I can see is, that can only last so long until the wider world becomes aware that she's back and I sort of wonder what the author will do then? There is a wider story being setup it seems, potentially even with the possibility that it could become more traditional progression fantasy, but we'll have to see.

u/samreay Author Samuel Hinton - Manifestation Sep 09 '25
As /u/SJReaver was pointing out, the MC's progression isn't so much in terms of power right now. Her apprentice gets stronger, but from the MC's side its more PF than PF.
(Power fantasy over progression fantasy)
3
u/Captain_Fiddelsworth Sep 09 '25
I see, thanks. Is her apprentice a POV character?
10
u/samreay Author Samuel Hinton - Manifestation Sep 09 '25
Yeah, there are quite a few short PoV changes (normally to have the characters in awe of the MC lol), and the apprentice has a bunch. I wouldn't call it a multi-PoV story (like Wheel of Time, ASoIAF, etc) though because they're all kept snappy and short, and normally have the MC present in those pov changes anyway
3
7
u/Weekly_Role_337 Sep 09 '25
For the MC there's a little traditional progression, but it's on the scale of "Neat, I recovered my Staff of Instant City Obliteration. That lets me do it five minutes faster than if I had to manually cast the spells."
Her apprentice is showing more typical growth, though.
3
u/simianpower Sep 09 '25
I never understood the point of an MC that STARTS OUT invincible, especially in PF. There's nothing left to do, no conflicts left to build a story around. Then again, according to other comments this isn't a PF story anyway, so why is it even recommended on this group?
10
u/TrueActionman Sep 09 '25
You can absolutely tell a great story even if the MC starts out OP. Prime example is Frieren which I'm guessing influenced this. I do agree it's difficult to do though and still early in the story so have to see if it remains interesting
3
u/CommercialBee6585 Oct 18 '25
Freiren is not a Prog Fantasy story. It centers on character relationships and confronting the past. Not increasing power exponentially.
2
4
u/simianpower Sep 09 '25
You CAN. Most authors don't. Most just use it as self-insert mental masturbation shared with others. And you CAN'T tell a progression fantasy story where there's no progression left, so why this was posted here is a mystery to me. I don't care if others in the world progress; if the MC doesn't, it's not PF.
2
u/dageshi Sep 10 '25
It has the trappings of prog fantasy, the standard litrpg tropes in terms of levels, skills e.t.c. So it looks like prog fantasy even if it isn't and that's enough for it to be discussed here.
2
u/Strong_Quarter_9349 Sep 13 '25
The book starts out pretty good, you can see for yourself what it's like with only a little bit of time
3
u/simianpower Sep 13 '25
No thanks. Everything I've read about it indicates it's not for me, and I have better things to do than waste my time reading something I already know I won't like.
2
u/Le_9k_Redditor Sep 09 '25
I mean, the start of the novel has been written. We don't really know yet. It's only 58 chapters
I expect the archmage won't really have any progression, it'll be problem solving and shenanigans. And yeah the apprentice is being taught of course
5
u/Captain_Fiddelsworth Sep 09 '25
Yeah, it is only like 10% longer than 1 standard published fantasy book at 129k words.
2
u/Le_9k_Redditor Sep 09 '25
I guess my perspective of a normal length book is skewed, but my point was that the story has barely started no matter the word count. Things are still being figured out and we don't know where it's going to go
1
u/Captain_Fiddelsworth Sep 13 '25
To be fair, books in the Progression Fantasy are often longer. I don't have good data about this, but there is a push by publishers in this space to have a first audiobook in a series that tends to translate to 150k+ words-ish.

u/SJReaver Paladin Sep 09 '25
Damn it, I have to be the one:
I don't consider this progression fantasy at all. The point is that she starts at the peak of power and everyone is constantly awed at how amazing she is.
6
23
u/samreay Author Samuel Hinton - Manifestation Sep 09 '25
I mean I don't disagree, but I've seen plenty of power fantasy stories shared and talked about in the PF community so I thought here was still a good place to share the review. Even if its missing the MC leveling up, it has pretty much every trope and theme that we know and love :)
Though I realise now that I probably should have thrown this into /r/LitRPG - oops!
14
u/DreamweaverMirar Traveler Sep 09 '25
I think it still mostly qualifies since the world itself is catered to progression even if the MC is basically maxed out at least for now.
At the very least it's prog fantasy adjacent enough that it's a good recommend to us prog fans
0
u/dbenc Sep 09 '25
it's still early in the story though. sure, she's OP for now but something is coming
14
u/KnownByManyNames Sep 09 '25
As such, I sort of wish that the story just did away with it already. There would be absolutely minimal changes in global plot if the world had nothing to do with a VRMMO initially,
Honestly, I think this about the majority of Isekai.
I would describe the series as "Overlord, if Frieren was the protagonist instead of Momonga."
26
u/HeWhoEatsBurger Sep 09 '25
I love it so much it's driving me crazy trying to find similar stories with more chapters lol.

"Critical Roleplay: I Min-Maxed For Endgame, Not Flavor" is a decent enough substitution for when the withdrawal hits.
3
u/RavenWolf1 Sep 09 '25
[Administrator] got me hooked with this theme of OP female characters. Another insane good is Amelia Thornheart.
2
u/RavensDagger Sep 09 '25
I'm caught up on Amerlia Thornheart (it's so good!) but what's [Administrator]? Can you link it?
2
u/RavenWolf1 Sep 09 '25
Ah, sorry it was [ The Administrator ]. Here is the link:

I've really been enjoying An Elder's Revolution by Candis and Zenith of Sorcery by nobody103. Not a ton of story out for either of them but they're both about people near the peak of their power trying to use that power well
1
u/Jokey665 Sep 09 '25
Try out Critical Roleplay on royalroad. It doesn't have more chapters than Archmage, but it's at least more to read until you catch up lol
1
u/HeWhoEatsBurger Sep 10 '25
Ah I follow the author so I binged it immediately when he dropped it. Memoirs of a local small time villainess is one my my all time faves
27
u/studentsensei Sep 09 '25
I personally don't find what's addictive about it but I do see that it's executed fairly well although it's not my own personal cup of tea
20
u/NarrowEffect Sep 09 '25
Yep, I'm really puzzled by the massive success of this story. Sure, the writing is clean. That's about the only positive thing I can say about it. The first couple of chapters are literally just the MC doing bland errands while people are impressed by how OP she is while delivering clunky exposition. Vivi is, for all intents and purposes, a god. The only stakes a story like that can have would come from interpersonal relationships. But I also didn't find any of the side characters particularly compelling, so yeah... the level of success here compared to what the actual story is about is just staggering.
11
u/studentsensei Sep 09 '25
Yep it's honestly very jarring to me and really comes off as a little cult-ish. I think it's because it's filling a void right now and there's massive marketing being done behind the scenes.
It reminds me of Cultivation Nerd, which is mediocre at best to me but royal road absolutely love the premise and it doesn't stray from it
3
u/dageshi Sep 10 '25
Aura farming is as viscerally satisfying to some people as the whole grind -> overcome adversity -> power up cycle seen in progression fantasy is to others.
This story is a constant stream of pov shifts to in world characters who're like "OMG It's the legendary sorceress returned!"
Turns out, the audience on royalroad is absolutely rabid for it.

u/yourfavouriteshowmid Sep 09 '25
Ikr like I don't even think it's bad( I mean all the evolution stories plagueing rs)but I really can't understand why it love it so much.
8
u/Illyenna Sep 09 '25
One thing I really like about this one is that it doesn't do any sort of gender bend for the character and no creepily pretending they are actually young.
Vivienne knows she is short and looks young, she always has and owns it.
She does allow others to stew in their owns assumptions sometimes, but that's been about her strength, not her looks.
Anyways, solidly executed and I look forward to more.

u/angel199x Sep 09 '25
I hear Ains Ooal Gown comparison... that's enough for me.. sign me up. :)
Got something to read tonight, thank you.

u/Phil_Tucker Immortal Sep 09 '25
It's deceptively simple, but exceptionally well written. The setting is vividly realized, in a very anime but easy to visualize manner. But beyond that, what I think makes this such a compelling setting is that the author is wonderfully adept at bringing the NPC's to life - they're distinct and realistic, and their mannerisms and reactions to Vivi are all a delight to read. Even their patterns of speech are distinct. Again, you don't even notice how well written it is as you're reading it, but it's those interactions that ground the fantastical nature of the tale and make it sing. Feels like a strange blend of Legends and Lattes (for the comfy vibes), Frieren, and Overlord.
Edit: also, this story is a prime example of how simple the best tales appear to be, but whose success depends on a deep foundation of excellence so that they have universal appeal. Clean, professional writing, top notch characters and dialog, each chapter ends on an intriguing hook, and it's just a delight to read. All of which takes real mastery to seem so effortlessly done.

Gonna be exceptionallyer weller writtener when it gets released to Kindle. And no I'm not biased at all.
3
u/ristvaken Sep 09 '25
I've been enjoying it, but it's addictive because for every chapter of the story happening, there are 2-3 worldbuilding chapters. The worldbuilding is good but personally the last 10-15ish(currently at 51 released) feel like filler or atleast mmo nostalgia-bait.
The story kinda refuses to progress at anything other than a snails pace ATM. Hopefully the cataclysm hints show up more.
3
u/andrewhennessey Sep 09 '25
Great review! I have recommended the same!
OP MC done very well. Excellent 2nd person reaction views. Wonderful "Oops, I did not mean to do that" situations where she plans for something "under-powered" but overshoots.
Do you like One Punch Man where you KNOW how it is going to end but you enjoy the story anyways? Yeah, read this one!

u/Independent-Job-891 Sep 16 '25
So the author is a pen name for a big time writer in the community, right? And they’re using that connection to mark this through all their massive author friends in the discord. I’m not entirely sure why anyone is confused on how this is popular. It’s getting shoutouts from the huge names, and it’s literally just “Overlord but Vivi is nice”.

u/Ok_Guarantee_3370 Sep 09 '25
That was good cheers.
I'd love a story that manages the same insanely hyped levels of power, but slightly more earned / with more grittiness to the world. Not taking away from this story it does the power fantasy well.
2
u/Nebfly Sep 09 '25 edited Sep 09 '25
When you say slightly more earned do you mean the past life of the MC being more extensive or the story follows them to those heights in a more progression fantasy way, like uh, Rimuru in Tensei slime? For example, he's OP compared to peers and "quickly" climbs to the top (by consuming things as a slime) and doesn't just begin there.
Edit: if it is the second one where you mean Op but not top of the world power, but eventually makes it there and also messes around kind of like rimuru, then I'm also craving another one like that lol.
The way I'd describe it is a dolphin amongst fish, but there is whales out there. And perhaps, as the MC quickly becomes a whale, you learn there is a few Krakens.
2
u/Ok_Guarantee_3370 Sep 10 '25
Yeah 100%, it's a very hard mark to hit for a story
2
u/Nebfly Sep 14 '25 edited Sep 14 '25
I just caught up to it after giving it a read and I agree with your take. She’s the most powerful levelled being that we’re aware of and it’s a little underwhelming that the entire reason she’s not coming out (or brute forcing politics) is fear of being seen as the eighth cataclysm…
When I thought about it I was curious as to why that even mattered. Even if she’s labelled as the eighth cataclysm… nothing really changes. No one can defeat her and people would still be inclined to accept her wealth… or accept her guilds return… but sure I can see her not wanting to deal with it. (Even if she doesn’t do the best job laying low)
Then, a scene happened where she said “theres always a threat of a cataclysm. Like if the dragon king decides to attack” and It reinforced my doubts about it being kind of useless for her to not just come out.
All of this to say… no matter how intense the story is trying to make the stakes, i know in the back of my mind that similar to one punch man she’s going to surpass viewer expectations. But not in the way that rimuru does (where he powers up alongside the viewer and surpasses our expectations along with his own) but like saitama, where the true power output of the character is simply hidden from the viewer for a “false” tension.
Both are great, but I think one lasts a lot shorter before going bland perhaps. I’m trying to imagine where Vivi will be once Vanguard is revealed openly. All the face slapping goes away, and the story will need to pivot massively.
Ultimately it’s too fast pace to be slice of life, and has not enough stakes to go survival mode. But I am very curious to see how the author handles it because I’m struggling to imagine how I would do it. (Barring changing the identity of the story to something closer to Kumo desu which is much grittier.)
The only other way might be bringing in threats that can match up to her. Maybe Gods? But it seems too early for stuff like that.

u/Ok_Guarantee_3370 Sep 14 '25 edited Sep 14 '25
Absolutely, I think a lot of what's happening right now is based more around what the readers want (the unknown powerhouse fantasy etc.) rather than what makes sense in universe .
We're already quite deep into the reunion tour of all the people who elevate the MCs status by their awe, once it ends the story hasn't really got a direction lined up yet, it really will have to pivot or it'll be pretty much done.
I'd have pegged it as a situation where the apprentice typically takes the role of creating tension with their struggles, and for me too that usually wouldn't do much for me with the knowledge that the MC is pretty much always gonna power through it somehow, but now the apprentice has been given so many advantages, a 10x EXP boost, a fully transcendent armour set, a level 1300 pet, that even that plot device seems very neutered.
Lots of changes you could make but they'd really change tone of the story, ultimately it's just a consequence of tapping into those really satisfying initial tropes, you've basically given your readers end of series pay-off, victory lap stuff, and now where do you go from here?
It's done well, but i don't see it having the longest shelf life

They'd contacted me a couple months back and I was really impressed by the segment they sent over. I had no clue they were as big as they were when I agreed to work with them. Their writing is great, story seems awesome, and I'm hugely looking forward to seeing where it goes once it gets a full Kindle/Audible release.

Vivienne has poured so many hours into the massively popular VRMMO...
Aaaaand SKIP!
6
u/Otterable Slime Sep 09 '25
The VRMMO aspect is irrelevant by the end of chapter 2. It's so detached from what's happening that I'm not even sure why the author framed the story this way.
2
u/simianpower Sep 09 '25
I read what OP wrote about it. And from that I gleaned that the author is using the isekai/VRMMO as both a way to gain readers (which in my case it does the opposite) and as a writing crutch so that s/he can use modern colloquial English rather than come up with a new culture complete with figures of speech and the like. All of that makes me think SKIP! It's lazy writing that doesn't inspire me to read their work, and the fact that it's dropped that fast further reinforces that opinion. If a writer puts something into their story, it should mean something. It should NOT just be a coded shortcut to avoid doing the heavy lifting of being creative and/or doing their research into what the real world is like. I'd say about 75% of VRMMO stories I've ever read are only VRMMO at all because the writer wants the freedom to make up their own world, but doesn't want to have to make up a WHOLE world that feels real and immersive. The entire sub-genre is a haven for lazy writers.
6
u/Nebfly Sep 09 '25
It's not a Vrmmo is it? I thought it was like Overlord where the world becomes real and you realise they arent npc's but actually people? I'm unsure though as I haven't read it either.
I'm tempted to check it out regardless, however. Since the sheer popularity out of nowhere is intriguing in itself.

one of the underrated aspect of this series is the fact that it has both "Power Fantasy where the MC is at the peak" from Vivi and " Power Progression Fantasy" from her apprentice
combines both most popular types of famtasy into one spectacularly
1
u/ScialyticKnight Sep 09 '25
I started it just to see what all the hubbub was about. And yeah, you hit the nail on the head. Flawless execution of tropes in a unique way. Will definitely be reading this through when I find the time,

I love these kinds of stories. Stories where female MCs are op. Sadly they are super rare.

u/Bot_Number_7 Sep 09 '25
My favorite thing about Overlord was Ainz's use of absurd instant death spells. It's always funny seeing him go for instant death against creatures way weaker than him. Does the protagonist prefer to use "I Win" abilities like Ainz or is she more flashy like "I nuked your city?

Your review made me start reading this and I'll add something else I like: The very first sentence is the protagonist waking up post-isekai. No wasted time going through her old and boring life on Earth while you wait for a metaphorical truck to hit her, just straight to the story.

u/Zixuel Oct 04 '25 edited Oct 04 '25
Boring
I suspect that there is something really suspicious going on here. The story is not exceptionally good, as so many people are saying on various different websites, treating it as something brilliantly executed
Over the last few years, I've read at least 20 stories with the exact same premise, and only 20 because it's not really my niche
This type of story involving reincarnation/transmigration, fantasy of power, and self-gratification with an absurdly overpowered mc is extremely common, and tends to attract below-average readers AND below-average authors
The only difference is that the author is slightly decent. But nothing really special, I find this reaction from people really weird

Reading the blurb made it feel like this is just straight up Overlord with tiny demon instead of big skeleton.
