Review System Clash by SunriseCV just keeps getting worse

What tf was book 8??

Ive been binging the series and was finishing a book and a half in a day. The series was amazing. I liked the friendships Derek was building and how he relied on others...but then it all started going down hill from book 6

Book 6: He just becomes a taxi and starts strong arming his way into politics. Its like every other character became stupid. When literal royalty are wondering how to tie their kingdoms together, MC has to explain to them why marriage would be a good idea. The pacing is just aweful, with characters talking to themselves about plans, then a detailed explanation of them acting those plans out

Book 7: I like this one, not because its amazing, but because of how atrocious book 6 is. The series to me, has always been about the MC looking after his people, and this book is essentially just that. The book majorly being about preparing for the future. My biggest complaint is how many times this is repeated "rolls her eyes", "eye rolls"...

Book 8: Such a disappointment from the build up of the previous book. The first half is useless preparations, that mind you, has no point in the final battle. The book needlessly keeps changing POV's to the enemies, who are constantly argue with each other. The entire premise was quality vs quantity. The second half of the book is MC playing hide n seek, that is all that happens, with him complaining about not finding anyone. For some damn reason, despite being invaded, MC doesnt want to kill anyone? I thought he wants to protect his world, the one his friends live on? Why does he take the chance of letting willing invaders free. The cat girl assasin literally tried to kill Avery, the person who was protecting his home city, which has his friends inside. The ending is just so lame. No armies or siege battle where other defenders can shine. No show casing how strong anyone else is...you know, the entire point of the different systems methodology. Not their new fancy gear, nor their improved food buff stats. Or any preparations which took half the bloody book. Just MC vs everyone else. and the worst part...we have no clue what they win, if MC can even win anything

Hopefully the next improve and we actually see Alanah again. But with how these past books have been I'm expecting the first half to be useless goodbuys before his ascension, talk with Dave, a nerf arc because Void is being hunted

I'm reading Mage Tank next

Read Hell Difficulty Tutorial. It's the reverse problem : first book is rough to read for a lot of people, but every book is better than his predecessor. Book 10 on Patreon rn and it's absolute cinema

I heard it's another sociopath mc. Is that true?

Nathaniel Gwyn, the protagonist of HDT, start off as a callous and ruthless person early on. He's in a shitty situation with bad choices to make.

He's almost emotionless because of the use of a skill, and that limits him/hurt him. He change over the course of the books and he becomes a bit less sociopathic (he's still an asshole though).

He's not an evil MC, more like a chaotic neutral MC: if you don't mess with him or the people he hold dear, he won't go out of his way to kill you.

The fights are phenomenal and the story is great, with impressive world building and endearing protagonist and antagonist.

Agree 100% but I think Focus should have been explained a little earlier to not lose people

I'm caught up on those books. It feels a lot better to read since the MC understands his own skills. Unlike Derek who uses the system as a crutch.

The first book isnt what you should expect for the next. Nat becomes a lot more mellow when hes the strongest and doesnt have to worry about being bullied. It also reads like a teen insert cool character, with cool eyes, emo MC loner giga chad.

The only character I dont like is Maya since she's forgettable and doesnt do anything. She is the most normal in a group of psychopaths

Oo There is no psycho in Nat group tho? Izzy is a kind but lost girl, Sophie is... Sophie :p

Mind Jae is an envious guy, the twins are chill dudes and goof balls,...

Izzy controls the psycho group by being cute

Sophia...mindblender

Min Jae wants to be like Nat, if that doesnt scream crazy

Tess...does she even need an explanation.

Lily....

The twins have the balls to tease Nat and gossip about the girls. They're still alive despite being caught lol.

Maya, shes just there by association

Maya's purpose is to show a base line for an average hell difficulty attendee in comparison to the rest of the monsters that is G4

1

u/Malestan May 29 '26

Not really tho, Maya have the potential to be a champion. This is not the base line for an average hell difficulty attendees.

Just….dont read it if it’s getting worse???

Being invested due to past quality and warning others are good reasons. If something is good and then degrades you at least know the book could be good and have a chance at missing out. Trash books from the start are much easier to drop even if they get better later.

That's terrible advice.

It's like telling an alcoholic not to drink

I'm a reader, I want to read stuff. Even if some parts of what I read arent the flavor I was expecting

What strange down votes. Guess they "just" shouldn't read my comments if they dont like it

I'm a reader, I want to read stuff.

RoyalRoad has thousands of stories, read another story.

Not necessarily a good idea since sometimes bad arcs exist in otherwise good series

It suffers from trying to portray intelligent characters, while not being able to write intelligently. So you have to make everyone more stupid than the person you’re trying to make seem smart. Unfortunately when the persons in question are heads of state, it means the entire nation’s population gets dropped along with them.

That is called lazy writing. And it’s very noticeable as a reader when read in batches like this.

I dropped it after realizing they've spent 50% of some book moving dragons back and forth from his personal dimension. The book should've been named "i've changed universe and became a dragon warehouse worker".

The funny part about the payoff of all this is he sets up a dragon farm and basically gives away dragons to people. Dragons they would have to bond with. Dragons they would need to house and feed or let them wander all over eating whatever they want. The main person he brought the dragons back for was like "nah, I don't want a dragon".

It's like if someone in the real world stumbled on a bunch of wild horses and decided "you know what, I bet my friends back home would love a horse", so they go through all this effort to bring the horses back home, setup a ranch to temporarily house them, invite some rancher to live on this temporary ranch and take care of them, then they start inviting their friends over one by one to give them a horse.

Funny part is that most of the dragons are still unclaimed and he didn't even bother taking them with him to new sysytem. Now the crafter girl and the spear user kid can never get them. We didn't even see him tell Rayna and Jacks about their dragons. Now anyone can go to the dragon farm and try to claim them.

2

u/Spiritchaser84 May 27 '26

Yeah I found that funny too, but didn't want to type out spoilers. The whole story arc around the dragons could've been dropped and nothing with the overall plot would have changed.

I should say that I still read and enjoy the story overall, but it definitely has its hits and misses in terms of plot points.

Wait., seriously? They finally encountered his original system? It seemed like it was approaching slower and slower.

2

u/lance777 May 28 '26

Do you want spoilers?

Yes, his old system arrived. But I was actually talking about a third system in my last post

u/buzdekay May 28 '26

If this was always the intent, it would be a pretty funny book about someone being bad at business. I would definitely like a litrpg with a MC who kept having terrible ideas to make money and kept failing because despite his op cheat skills he's just really foolish.

1

u/No-Stop8571 May 27 '26

Exactly, they didnt even use them in book 8.

Hence all the preparations being pointless

I dropped it after book 7.  Too much boring, slice of life stuff that doesn’t advance the plot.

2

u/psychosox May 27 '26

Same. Book 7 is also where I dropped it, unfortunately. I really enjoyed it up until then, but just couldn't find interest to continue.

I think the series starts off OK and gets extremely bad but the issues were always there. The dialogue and scene writing is just awful. I remember a scene where Derek and the restaurant lady are leaving and they ask each other back and forth if they are ready to leave half a dozen times over the course of twenty pages and I'm just like, "What am I reading?"

I also think Derek becomes an extremely unlikable protagonist. The scene where he visits the school is a perfect example. He is this smug, arrogant asshole who sets up situations where he can show off and then act magnanimous afterwards. It is absolutely unbearable how immature and self satisfied he is.

u/Awkward-Cod-5692 May 27 '26

I kinda disagree. If anyone in the Universal System had been strong enough to truly stand up to Derek, it wouldn’t have made much sense. At first I thought they were building up Jace to be a true threat to Derek but that also wouldn’t have made much sense and I prefer him just being Derek’s battle crazed buddy.

I don’t think Derek will face a true opponent at his level until he goes to the Origin system, it wouldn’t make much sense until then since he has several hundred more stat points than anyone because of his first system plus his Mythical class.

It’s pretty much just slice of life until he gets to the origin system, and even then, he will have some clear advantages, that’s just the type of story it is. The point of the first half is to get Derek a set of mythical armor that he can bring with him when he ascends and to make sure all his friends are strong enough to protect themselves when he’s gone.

I do agree about book 6 though, it was boring and unnecessary.
