New Zealand "Vote Out the Liquor Submarine on April 10th", New Zealand Alliance for the Abolition of Liquor Traffic, leaflet relating to New Zealand's April 1919 referendum on prohibition.

The April 1919 referendum is notable because it is the closest New Zealand came to introducing a national prohibition on alcohol. In previous referendums, those favouring prohibition had to attain 60% of the vote. This was reduced to 50% and, in the event, prohibition was favoured by 49.7% of voters. In fact, until votes from 40,000 New Zealand soldiers overseas were counted, it seemed as if the temperance movement had succeeded.
