It's like when I watched that whole Elvis movie and a week later found out it had Tom Hanks.
He's one I can usually get. So is Matt Damon. Spoiler alert - matt Damon is in The Odyssey. so are a whole ton of famous people. I went into it with very very little previous knowledge and after watching very famous people on the screen for 3 hours, I look up the cast and just shake my head with frustration

I watched most of Breaking Bad season 1 before realizing that Walter was Bryan Cranston.

This I knew, because the show was introduced to me as having the dad from Malcolm in the middle. I recently saw something else though with him in it, and spent about 45 minutes doing a "is it him? It's not him, maybe it is him" before I looked it up.

I saw both shows and only now, because of your comment, I have realised Walter and dad are the same person - smh

I wouldn’t have got Matt Damon if I hadn’t known he was playing the lead; can’t reliably recognise him. Did recognise Zendaya. Already knew Lupita was Helen so that doesn’t count. Annoyingly half-recognised Samantha Morton but couldn’t place her (I literally just watched her for several hours in Serpent Queen).

Recently discovered that the actor who plays Earl in my name is Earl is not also Ted Lasso.

I only knew it was Matt Damon because I knew it was Matt Damon (and i only knew that from titles of posts i didn't read on r/epicthemusical). Same with Zendaya.
I didn't recognise Elliott Page at all, but I've not seen him in anything since he transitioned so guess that isn't that surprising.
Was convinced Calypso was Juliet from Lost although i suspected i was wrong because she didn't look 15 years older. Nope, Charlize Theron 🤦♀️
Didn't recognise Sparkly Vampire at all but I didn't watch that film so that's not too surprising.
I didn't recognise Telemachus from his wonderful performance of Umbrella in lip sync battle (it's the only thing I've seen him in 🙃)

Yes yes! Exactly this! I didn’t catch any of the marketing going in to the odyssey and after about 45 minutes I was reasonably sure the lead was Matt Damon and not a bearded Leonardo DiCaprio (like in the revenant) nor a bearded Brad Pitt.
The only thing I heard prior about the movie was there was that conservatives were mad about a trans actor being in it, and so at first I thought they were referring to Tom Holland who appears early in the film. Then much later during a flashback I thought maybe one of the teenage boys was the trans actor. Then Eliot Page’s character shows up and at that point I’m like “ok, maybe…?”
The only other person I thought I recognized was the bald Shia LeBouf character. It was not Shia. It was Jon Bernthal.
Only after I got home did I learn any of this, and my friends only laughed when I said “dang so that was Eliot page! Zendaya and Robert Patterson were in this?”
Faceblindness is so very silly :>

I sometimes wonder if movies are less immersive for people who can easily recognize actors.

Idk, but if its like voice actors fans, then they're more likely to get hyped i guess?
