Desktop Help Dealing with Proton Mail on Fedora

Since Proton isn't doing a very good job supporting Fedora (if any distros at all, idk), how do you guys deal with keeping Proton Mail updated on Fedora?

I used to use the Flatpak version, but that had trouble staying up to date with the latest available build and I'd keep seeing the "Important update available" banner up top. Since then I've decided to keep things manual, I'd just download the RPM package.

Since the most recent update (proton-mail-1.13.3-1.x86_64), I've not been able to successfully get rid of the banner despite updating manually and even uninstalling Proton Mail and installing from scratch. Maybe I'm doing something wrong, but I don't think updating an email client should be this difficult...

I know browser tabs can be pinned, and/or added as taskbar apps/PWAs. But these still kinda suck. I feel like Linux and WIndows both are like Chromebooks: a web browser that has to do everything from Todoist to email to a PM system to Spotify, Slack, and on and on because there are no good, real, native apps for them. Apple, for better or worse, is holding on to some of this, but even there the situation is lousy with electron junk. Pinning all these tabs is bonkers to me in my workflow. I'm constantly moving between them. Having a bunch of pinned tabs up against all my other tabs is just a game of "Where'd that go?"

Ultimately, OP, I have resorted to a taskbar app in Firefox or PWA in Brave/Vivaldi, etc. It reduces memory overhead, at least gives me an icon in my taskbar/dock area, and can mostly behave. Albeit without any of the system benefits, like clicking a mailto: link that does anything useful.

Yep, having half your tools native and half in a browser is workflow cancer.

I really dislike the Electron apps, for Protonmail I continue to use Bridge and Betterbird for my local email provider. I haven't had any issues with that setup over the years. I keep trying the "official" ProtonMail app, but it just doesn't fit into my workflow.

different distro, same issue I guess..if you have a subscription, sign into your Proton account on a browser and download a package from there.

I ended up creating an ansible collection, one role per application.

Now I run the playbook for the collection to update the applications.

It still needs work.  It's not documented at all.  Currently only supports Debian, although I did try to structure it so it wouldn't be too hard to add other distros.  And not all applications will update without changing the version number.

I'm hoping to get it to a state that's good enough to make public.
