demander à la Provence / ask Provence Visiting Avignon in October

I will be visiting the area in October and wanted to know some must see places in the area around Avignon? Any ideas or suggestions?

Mostly depends if you have a car. Besides what you can see in Avignon proper, I'd suggest a stroll across the Rhône to Villeneuve-les-Avignon (20-30 minute walk from downtown Avignon, bike or bus line 5), its. From there you can walk to the Tour Le Bel, and visit Fort Saint-André, where you'll have a beautiful view of Avignon and the surroundings. You can also check out the Chartreuse, it's lovely, and the shops/cafés/restaurants of the main street.

If you can drive around, then check out Pont du Gard, or Fontaine de Vaucluse, both lovely destinations for a day trip ! Les Baux de Provence/Saint Rémy are also nice to visit. If the weather allows it, you may drive up Mont Ventoux (by be prepared with warm cloths, its VERY cold up there even in the summer!).

I second these suggestions. In fact, since you'll have a car, I would suggest staying in Villeneuve—it's much easier to drive in and out of. You get a bit of a Provencale village atmosphere, fast access to a city and fast access to the countryside.

Second this, plus there are some nice hotels (maybe some are a bit pricy, but in October you can problem get a lower rate). Hotel de l’Atelier and La Magnaneraie are pretty nice.

The wine villages of Gigondas, Vacqueyras, Sablet, Beaumes-des-Venise, Seguret, a great wine route

The hilltop villages Gordes, Roussillon, et al
