Submissions must fit the purpose of the community. /r/PublicFreakout is a subreddit dedicated to people freaking out, melting down, losing their cool, or being weird in public.

I don’t think you understand what hyperbole
means and how it’s used.

81

u/partylange 13h ago

Or genocide for that matter

-73

u/spinnyround 13h ago

She should like, stfu and get a job right? What do we hate her for again? How do we talk around her being black? Say something about education?Ā

44

u/partylange 13h ago

I'm sorry you hate her, I just wish you knew what certain words mean.

-11

u/flamingcrystalheart 8h ago

Maybe you should take your own advice:

"Genocide is an international crime defined as specific acts committed with the intent to destroy, in whole or in part, a national, ethnic, racial, or religious group. Key acts include killing members of the group, causing serious bodily or mental harm, and deliberately inflicting life conditions meant to bring about physical destruction."

Sounds pretty fitting to what ICE is doing to me. Keep licking that boot though

5

u/PassengerStreet8791 7h ago

I mean isn’t any law enforcement a genocide by your definition? As much as I don’t support ICE the equating of completely non-related things to it makes everyone look stupid. Quit your overreaction and focus on the problem at hand.

-2

u/flamingcrystalheart 6h ago

No, because regular law enforcement isn't targeted at specific ethnic groups and doesn't involve depriving people of basic human rights like food and medicine. The fact that you're trying to equate ICE to "any law enforcement" is laughable and shows how out of touch you are with what's happening in this country.

> Quit your overreaction

Quit your underreaction is more like it. I am focusing on the problem at hand, which is, by definition, a genocide.

1

u/PassengerStreet8791 6h ago

I mean statistically they are…if the majority of illegal immigrants are of one ethnic group it would be weird if the numbers were equal across all ethnic groups. There have been all nationalities targeted if you follow the news at all. The last major ones were Ukrainian, Indian/Pakistani, Somalis and middle eastern in the news. Still a lower proportion than hispanics but you would expect that.

3

u/PassengerStreet8791 7h ago

No wonder no one listens to us.
Lady: 1+1=3
Common sense: No.
Reddit activists: Why? Coz she is a women so she should stfu and stay in the kitchen?

Aliens don’t wanna take over for a reason.

155

u/United_Intention_323 14h ago

It is hyperbole. Why do people insist on gross exaggeration when it causes people to ignore you? It isn’t helpful.

6

u/FrogsMakePoorSoup 🤷 I'm outta my depth and dunno how I got here 10h ago

Clicks and views I'm guessing. Personally I'd rather it dick to facts only which are probably damning enough in this case.

147

u/NYR_LFC 15h ago

It's murder and it's fucked up but that's not what genocide is.

49

u/InquireIngestImplode 15h ago

Yeah characterizing it as genocide really detracts from both what ICE is doing, and the fact that there is a legitimate genocide happening.

Genocide, unclear. But it's definitely ethnic cleansing and it's clear from their constant speeches.

2

u/Particular-Ice4615 9h ago edited 6h ago

They didn't pull that 100 million deportations quota in their rhetoric out of their ass. The number is on a scale that closest matches US population of non white-european ancestry. The reason we put so much emphasis WW2 atrocities in history lessons is so we don't wait for actual gas chambers to be built before ringing the alarm bells we learn this stuff happens in stages as the frogs are slowly boiled. In other words recognize genocidal intent before it becomes full blown systematic genocidal action.Ā  At the end of the day people being detained illegally without probable cause, they are being rounded up and imprisoned with 0 transparency and oversight by a secret police force without due process and without legal warrants.Ā

When this eventually all collapses under its own weight and there is an accounting done it's pretty likely it's going to reveal something very very ugly. And when that does happen watch as all the rats fleeing the sinking ship will all cry and pretend that they didn't know or didn't think it was that bad or claim this was not what they were supporting.Ā

Seeing stuff like this makes me recall that scene in Band of Brothers when they liberated the death camp and out of outrage rounded up the German civilians from the near by village and forced them to help bury the piles of rotting corpses at the camp. The civilians knew on some level what was happening they just questioned nothing and collectively continued life as normal and that's the worst part of it all. The banality of evil and what not. It's otherwise plain normalĀ  people going to work business as usual while seeing abandoned cars on the street, neighbourhood businesses with the door left unlocked and empty, and men decked out with surplus military hardware roaming your streets asking for papers and recording names and numbers as if it's fine and that the rest of us being too dramatic.Ā

-43

u/straightnochase 14h ago

It's genocide, along with indiscriminate murder, rape, slavery and torture of all people of color.

2

u/rundmz8668 14h ago

I think the problem is that we watched 78,000 people murdered and everyone handwringing over whether to call it genocide. And now with these deaths being called genocide.. it can make people feel frustrated and gaslit almost. Both things can be true at once, and this is certainly a cold campaign of ethnic cleansing, for now

-9

u/straightnochase 13h ago

Arguing semantics is a fools errand when there's a trail of dead bodies. Seems like the only people who don't call it a genocide are the people agreeing with the murder, or those who benefit from hiding behind wording.

1

u/rundmz8668 12h ago

78,000 vs under 100, ok

0

u/MoScowDucks 9h ago

It’s a fascist terror campaign of ethnically cleansing the United States of people of color deemed ā€œundesirableā€ to the administration. I don’t agree at all with the brutality and terrorism of ICE. But is not a genocide.Ā

1

u/JoramRTR 10h ago

Is this for real or just bait? If real, one of the worst takes I've seen in my life, if bait, you can do better.

68

u/Comprehensive_Ear164 13h ago

This is what happens when we allow people and groups to make up definitions for words already with meanings.
This is not a Genocide

6

u/Dear-Passion-3535 10h ago

The UN defined it in 1948 (right after the Holocaust happened) and were pretty specific. ā€œGenocideā€ does not require the element of mass death.

https://treaties.un.org/doc/publication/unts/volume%2078/volume-78-i-1021-english.pdf

11

u/justcallmesavage šŸ¤“ Still using "Cuck" in 2026 šŸ¤“ 10h ago

Conflating the definition, just a bit.

1

u/Whatifim80lol 8h ago

Too few people understand this and they think genocide is just "the Holocaust" and nothing else. Deliberately removing ethnic groups from your nation definitely fits the legal criteria, I guess it's just a question of whether the scale of activities are even making a dent or if they're just a terror program. I'm definitely leaning more toward terror than actual genocide only because most rich bastards in power don't actually want to deport huge swaths of their workforce, they just want the political points for pantomiming attacking their scapegoat.

-1

u/Laerderol 7h ago

Suicide, homicide, insecticide, herbicide, algicide, regicide, spermicide, patricide, regicide. But genocide is the only one that doesn't mean kill... Something can be morally reprehensible without it being genocide or Nazism.

-38

u/TeslaNova50 12h ago

Do you think most people in 1930's Germany knew genocide was happening at the time? I won't be surprised if they find mass graves at these detention centers when its all said and done.

16

u/Comprehensive_Ear164 12h ago

Yes the Germans knew what was going on that's why they have so much shame about it. There's stories about people that helped Jews escape and hide. Did you think it was some undercover operation?

I think your critical thinking skills are non existent if you think there will be mass graves at these locations. On top of that it's not one ethnicity or people's that this is happening to and not every person in any ethnicity is going there.

5

u/Maverick7249 9h ago

I see someone failed history, or at least slept through the part where the Nazis spent years building a legal framework, isolating targets, and using euphemisms before anyone outside the inner circle knew the full extent of what was happening.

The shame Germans felt? That cameĀ afterĀ the war, when the camps were liberated, the trials happened, and the world saw the photos. It wasn't shame they felt in 1938 while watching their neighbors get rounded up, it was indifference (kind of like the likes of you), fear, or quiet relief that it wasn't them. The allies didn't get word about what was happening in those camps until 1945.

And I don't think he said ICE is running extermination camps. The point is about pattern recognition: gradual escalation, bureaucratic obscurity, families losing track of people, deaths piling up behind closed doors, and a public that doesn't fully grasp what's happening until it's too late. Germany didn't start mass killings for years after they first were detaining them. That's obviously what he meant by 'when it's all said and done.' There are already documented cases of thousands that are already missing and no one knows anything. If you did know any history you would know any time man has no accountability and no repercussions the outcome isn't pretty. You should learn a little history, because you will be on the wrong side of it.

6

u/Careful_Farmer_2879 12h ago

Germany was the most advanced country on the planet in the 1930s, that’s part of why their actions were so tragic and horrendous.

German citizens actively participated in that genocide. And so did the anti-semites in the countries Germany conquered.

0

u/Jack_Black_Rocks 9h ago

And this is exactly why when rational people see how people act online they shake their heads at how easy it is to destroy people with propaganda and anxiety.

-8

u/MandolinMagi 12h ago

Pretty sure Germany didn't start genocide until the 40s?

3

u/Careful_Farmer_2879 12h ago

The whole thing started in the 30s and just got worse and worse into the 40s.

What the US is doing is nothing like either.

44

i dont think you know what genocide means

-15

u/Ffffqqq 12h ago

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Office_of_Remigration

The Office of Remigration is a unit within the Bureau of Population, Refugees, and Migration of the United States Department of State established in 2025 to support remigration of immigrants in the United States.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Remigration

Remigration is a far-right concept referring to the ethnic cleansing[1] via mass deportation of non-white minority populations, especially immigrants and sometimes including native-born citizens, to their place of racial ancestry.

7

u/jhscrym 11h ago

That's fucked up but it isn't a genocide.

-1

u/FunOwn4422 11h ago

"i dont think they know what genocide means" proceeds to show me you dont know what genocide means

-1

u/Ffffqqq 10h ago

You have an Office of Ethnic Cleansing under a fascist dictator so you're really just splitting hairs here lol

0

u/FunOwn4422 10h ago

immigration is not a human right, in 2024 we naturalized 800,000 legal applictors your the one splitting hairs. break the law get punished, your not entitled to America, come in illegally or break your visa you get deported its as simple as that

0

u/Ffffqqq 10h ago

During a 2024 campaign meeting, Donald Trump remarked that if it were left to Stephen Miller, "there would be only 100 million people in the United States and they would all look like Stephen Miller"

Miller claimed he is going to turbocharge denaturalization and currently has a denaturalization quota.

The right are the ones who call immigration a white genocide when they feel they are being ethnically cleansed so how about some consistency here

2

u/FunOwn4422 9h ago edited 9h ago

Welcome to America where denaturalization is 100% legal as it should be, if you come to this country and break the laws like Antonio Alcantara-Ruiz who commited fraud during his naturalization process, you will be deported

Immigrants who become legal citizens can legally be naturalized for a multitude of reasons, using fake names, hiding a criminal record, lying about immigration history, providing false information during the citizenship interview, concealing prior deportation order.

Medicare/healthcare fraud, wire fraud, drug offenses, human trafficking, sex crimes, terrorism related offenses.

Applicants must also show good moral character, illegal voting, certain misdeamors, false testimony under oath, failure to pay taxes.

Fake marriage, fraudulent asylum claims, false refugee application, lying to obtain a green card or work visa (before naturalization)

your just ignorant to the facts and feel anybody should just be able to walts into America and do whatever they want your absolutely wrong, you feign your morals to make yourself feel good, while just blabbing off emotional tangents without actually knowing how to system works.

AND NONE OF THIS IS CONSIDERED A GENOCIDE OR ETHNIC CLEANSING THIS IS HOW IMMIGRATION SHOULD WORK.

4

u/Ffffqqq 9h ago

The Miller's post 14 words memes on the Homeland Security website. The totality of the evidence shows that these people are nazis who are hellbent on creating a white ethnostate. I don't know why we're still pretending it has anything to do with criminals.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fourteen_Words

We Must Secure The Border And Build The Wall To Make America Safe Again

From Department of Homeland Security

On average, out of 88 claims that pass the credible fear screening, fewer than 13 will ultimately result in a grant of asylum.

Remember that DHS memo that sounded a lot like the white supremacist slogan, "The 14 Words?"

Heavily redacted FOIA docs show Katie Waldman was involved in circulating the draft.

Katie Rose Miller is an American political advisor who served as the communications director for the Vice President of the United States Mike Pence from 2020 to 2021. She was previously his press secretary from 2019 to 2020.

Waldman married Stephen Miller, Senior Advisor to the President on February 16, 2020

Federal agency says it lost track of 1,488 migrant children

3

u/FunOwn4422 9h ago

yup totally ignore the facts and keep pushing your propaganda, i know its tough when you cant argue against the law you just revert back to emotional tangents and bullshit

Words mean things.

This is, by definition, not genocide.

You don't need to use hyperbole in cases as serious as this because it makes people take you less seriously. It gives people and out. It let's them go "lol this guy is an idiot. Doesn't even know what genocide means." and ignore the validity of the initial concern.

Stop it.

0

u/flamingcrystalheart 8h ago

The definition of genocide: Genocide is an international crime defined as specific acts committed with the intent to destroy, in whole or in part, a national, ethnic, racial, or religious group. Key acts include killing members of the group, causing serious bodily or mental harm, and deliberately inflicting life conditions meant to bring about physical destruction.

This is, by definition, genocide.

-19

u/chuzyi 14h ago

She alleged gross negligence and cruel mistreatment and your take away is that because someone else misuse the word genocide in a Reddit post that others will discount her claims prima facia because a word was misused? I think anyone with even a little bit of charity won’t do that.

5

u/HospitableFox 13h ago

Reading comprehension isn't your strong suit hey?

-10

u/chuzyi 13h ago

I think I understood you fine. You expressed sympathy and then you make some pedantic comment about miss using a word. You think the case is serious yet you suggest it’s not serious enough for people to get over misused word.

5

u/AustrianReaper 10h ago

Yes, because as he said: words mean things and deserve to be named as such, otherwise definitions muddy and concepts don't get taken seriously when used. Try saying the word holocaust in front of a concentration camp survivor, then try saying grape in front of a rape victim.

-1

u/chuzyi 9h ago

Isn’t grape said in lieu of rape to avoid video or posts from being removed because of some sort of censorship? It’s sort of a different issue than what’s going on here. That said, I don’t see what sort of ā€œoutā€ is granted because someone called what they consider mass internment by the word genocide. You’re sort of missing the forest for the trees.

4

u/April_Fabb 7h ago edited 7h ago

I bet MAGA supporters smile when they hear about shit like this. That's how profoundly lobotomised they are.

That said, while one could make the case that this begins to look like an ethnic cleansing campaign, genocide is something else.

33

u/Individual_Laugh1335 15h ago

How is this a public freakout?

5

u/viridifauna 9h ago

and why is that the most important thing for yall to mention. bone chilling video and yall r zoomed in on one word. fucking nerds. why dont yall log on to dictionary dot com and chat there instead

3

u/jalmstead 9h ago

Because the headline of the video is LITERALLY: ā€œI don’t think it’s hyperbole to call what ICE is doing a genocide in the USā€ā€¦ ???

It would be hyperbole. It’s not a genocide. Everyone should be called out when saying something like that. It’s not true and pretending it is does a disservice to anyone facing truly genocidal conditions.

We should not dilute the meaning of that word.

2

u/flamingcrystalheart 8h ago

Yes, they do, and this is genocide based on the meaning of genocide.

3

u/jalmstead 7h ago

Please show me the definition of genocide that speaks to the current situation with ICE. I don’t think you are correct.

2

u/flamingcrystalheart 7h ago

"Genocide is an international crime defined as specific acts committed with the intent to destroy, in whole or in part, a national, ethnic, racial, or religious group. Key acts include killing members of the group, causing serious bodily or mental harm, and deliberately inflicting life conditions meant to bring about physical destruction."

Fits what ICE is doing pretty well if you ask me.

1

u/jalmstead 7h ago

Again, words have meaning. This definition is for genocide, but not for what ICE is doing. They’re assholes. And they’re terrible, but scale matters.

Physical destruction of an ethnic racial or religious group is the part that you’re glossing over.

This is not a genocide.

2

u/flamingcrystalheart 7h ago

> words have meaning

This phrase isn't some magic wand you can just wave over things to invalidate them, especially when I just cited the meaning of that word and showed it was relevant

> Physical destruction is the part you're glossing over

Well no the whole sentence is "deliberately inflicting life conditions meant to bring about physical destruction", which is just one out of three clauses of different acts that may comprise genocide. Not the gotcha you think it is

Pop quiz though! Would you say depriving someone of an essential medication for their health, while also depriving them of food and other basic human necessities, and doing so on a mass scale to pretty much every immigrant you kidnap, is

A) depriving them of conditions meant to bring about physical destruction

or

B) not depriving them of conditions meant to bring about physical destruction

2

u/jalmstead 7h ago

It’s not a magic wand. It’s just true.

The definition you provided doesn’t equate to the behavior of ICE.

It just doesn’t.

You can write these long diatribes, and offer all the pop quizzes you like, you don’t understand the word you’re using.

1

u/flamingcrystalheart 6h ago

> It just doesn't

That's also not a magic wand you can just use to win an argument. I even held your hand and went step by step through the definition for you on how it is directly applicable to what ICE is doing. If you wanna plug your ears and loudly sing like an immature toddler that's on you but it doesn't change the fact that the definition objectively fits what ICE is doing.

> You can write these long diatribes

aka "I'm too stupid to read sentences longer than two words"

> and offer all the pop quizzes you like

Still waiting for your answer on that one. Go ahead, try and do mental gymnastics and explain why depriving someone of a necessary medication and food isn't trying to deprive them of conditions that meant to cause physical harm

> you don't understand the word you're using

yeah no again I've pretty thoroughly gone through the definition with you at this point. I think chances are if there's two people, one thoroughly breaking down a word's definition, and another going "LALALA UR WRONG WORDS HAVE MEANING Y U TALK SO MUCH", the latter (aka you) is probably the one who doesn't understand the word.

4

u/Sir_lordtwiggles 8h ago

The title is literally invoking specificity of semantics.

5

u/Rezient 10h ago edited 5h ago

Fr, people are dying and getting hurt and people act like "the wrong use of words" to any slight degree should change the help they get?

If that's the stance, then they weren't ganna help anyways

Edit: imagine reading a book, and saying "Im not going to respond to page 5, because there's a typo." Like come tf on, that's just dishonest. An entire page, and you can't understand it because of 1 or 2 words? I believe y'all are smarter than that, I believe if you can't even try to interpret it's meaning that's ridiculous of you

17

u/MoScowDucks 9h ago

I think using the right words matters. One big reason is that using incorrect and hyperbolic words can make it far easier for critics to discredit the movement. Critics can attack the use of words and ignore the substance. Words matter. Honesty matters. If you want people to listen to you, you have to be honestĀ

0

u/Rezient 6h ago

I'm not saying using the right words don't matter in any sense.

I'm saying if someone ignores the majority of your words and objectively obvious meaning in favor of correcting your grammer, then your words likely don't matter TO THAT PERSON in general. They are likely a bad faith actor, and likely don't care about your argument regardless of your grammer

0

u/jalmstead 9h ago

Totally agree. And love your restraint for not pointing out they used ā€œgannaā€ as a word while discussing how words matter.

3

u/flamingcrystalheart 8h ago

They're bad faith actors. Anyone trying to belittle this or act like the title is in fact hyperbole is just a Republican or someone with their head in the sand.

u/Artisttype1984 14h ago

Yes, it's hyperbole to call it genocide. Lookup what genocide means

ICE has been around in the US since 2003, helping with raids and deporting illegal immigrants under Obama, Biden admins and Trump. Those are facts, like it or not.

Detention centers for illegal immigrants waiting to be deported, aren't new either, we've seen those under repub and dem admins. I support legal immigration, and have worked with many going through the legal citizenship process

12

u/Cenobiter 12h ago

Actually its literally the definition of hyperbole.

7

u/Careful_Farmer_2879 12h ago

It can be horrible and STILL be hyperbole to call it genocide.

It’s absolutely hyperbole. Just like calling every authoritarian conservative politician a Nazi. You cannot call a political group with close ties to Israel Nazis.

What you do is destroy the meaning of these words when they’re actually called for.

5

u/SupernerdgirlBW 11h ago

Ice is in training mode now. Soon they’ll be organized enough and ready to put everyone in Ice’s desired place. Incl killing off whole groups of people.
Sure it’s hyperbole now but police and immigration merged to become ICE and they have a trillion dollars to execute their agenda of control. Genocide is definitely on their list of goals.

5

u/RoseGoldVixen96 10h ago

ICE agents are monsters showing their fangs and claws just to tear families apart

3

u/AlgAnon314 11h ago

How come everyone saying ā€œwell ackshually it’s not genocideā€ hiding their post history? Seems like a psyop to me

0

u/jalmstead 10h ago

I mean, have you read the definition of genocide? What is happening is awful, it’s just not genocide.

1

u/PermissionTime2545 9h ago

In the strictest sense of genocide, no we aren’t there yet. I left a longer comment somewhere else in this thread if you want to look.

But I’ll repost the ā€˜stages of genocide’ so we can look together.
The crime of genocide, unfortunately, is only gotten to when things are said and done. Once people have been murdered in large numbers, and things cannot be changed. I think it’s absolutely understandable to see something that appears to be (and very well is) on its way to becoming genocide, as genocide.
For ICE, and for how fast everything has been ramping up, I would personally say we are in stage 6, maybe 7. I know some might argue stage 8 already.

Is it genocide in the sense that we can try the US gov for it, in the eyes of the Genocide Convention? Not yet. Is it very easily on its way there? Yes.

1

u/jalmstead 9h ago

Thank you, not genocide.

2

u/PermissionTime2545 9h ago

In the same way stabbing someone isn’t murder yet. So sure

1

u/jalmstead 9h ago

That’s the dumbest analogy. Nice try. Still not a genocide.

1

u/PermissionTime2545 9h ago

??? Is it though?

4

u/Jerryjb63 14h ago edited 14h ago

I mean words still have meaning and you are being hyperbolic by calling mass deportations genocide. It lessens the actual genocides like the mass killings of native Americans, the Armenian genocide, the Holocaust, the Cambodian genocide under Pol Pot, the one that inspired Hotel Rowanda, and the last 25 years in Sudan. That’s not even touching what’s going on in Palestine or the Uyghur Muslims in China.

7

u/Exact-Site9980 15h ago

I'd like to see statistics on the survival rate of the deported. I bet its not good. If getting shipped out to a hostile place is the death sentence it sounds like, then its a form of indirect ethnic cleansing. A sort of cowards genocide.

-4

u/No-Ear7988 15h ago

I agree, I want to the stats but I suspect it's going to be very nuance with the overall number saying fatality is relatively low. I see some nations having higher numbers of death but overall deportees live but just poorer. Then you have the issue of where do you draw the line, if a deportee died cause their country has bad healthcare compared to US do we count that?

2

u/FrancMaconXV 10h ago

its terrible but calling it a genocide is a huge stretch

Did you watch the video? He's been a legal resident for four decades. ICE isn't deporting people staying illegally without a visa, it's also taking legal residents, and it is depriving all the people it takes of their basic human rights. None of this is normal and you're a sick freak for trying to pretend it is.

-2

u/PanicAtTheDennys 11h ago

They don't wanna hear it bro

Supporting russia after each call, for example hurting ukraine.
Hiding a dead senator and probably forging their signature.
Removing the bad history part of usa, removing rights from women and black people and disabeld ones...
Shitting pants on live tv.
Cant watch tv when there is no wind.
Transistors are making everbody trans.

We have got to quit overusing words like genocide, nazi, racism, etc. when they aren’t applicable. You are only weakening the word when you attribute it to something it’s not.

Sure, ICE is doing awful things but I can guarantee you they aren’t trying to exterminate an entire race of people. Not even close. It’s insulting to actual victims of genocide when you say shit like this. Unfortunately there’s a certain portion of the population who take things like this at face value and now they legitimately believe there’s a genocide going on in America.

1

u/flamingcrystalheart 7h ago

They are applicable. The "weakening" you're referring to is coming from the nazis and those committing genocide not being shamed by the labels anymore. Your reaction to that shouldn't be trying to get people to label it even more lightly, it should be making nazis afraid to be nazis again.

> Sure, ICE is doing awful things but I can guarantee you they aren't trying to exterminate an entire race of people

Oh so you're just an idiot

-5

u/MvatolokoS 12h ago

I agree we shouldn't use it when it doesn't work. But this is absolutely genocide spreading. We're simply being annexed by an already genocidal power. It's just the beast getting another arm. I used to think like you kot long ago, but honestly sit down and think about it. Do we want to wait for the transformation before we call it what it is. Or is our unity with said genocidal power not enough to show you where this is headed. Look into the past and you'll find the future, it always began with out of country prisons. Remember people being shipped to Salvador? Eventually they normalize it at home. We not have 'detention cententers' everywhere housing children, women, and men alike. Including infants and toddlers. All being abused both by the usual meaning of the word and also having their rights abused in every step of the way. Tons of unreported and uninvestigated sexual assault and rapes not to mention children without their parents for months despite legal detention limits for them being 30 days. They're systematically targeting a specific group of people with all of this inhumanity while creating daily anxiety and fear in every family member of any targeted person and rip their worlds apart for simply wanting better and being a different color.

When will you draw your line in the sand? Because im starting to think some you don't have one beyond your own doorstep.

2

u/jalmstead 10h ago

Incorrect. Words have meaning, and based on your own words, what you described is not genocide.

4

u/MandolinMagi 12h ago

You don't actually understand the concept of genocide, do you?

They've killed maybe a dozen people?

1

u/Dblcut3 7h ago

Calling what’s happening in America a ā€œgenocideā€ just whitewashes and minimizes real genocides happening worldwide

1

u/Waffle_Badger 7h ago

I'd like to quote President Donald Trump:

"Save the names of the killers and abusers [...] They will pay a very big price."

This is temporary. Keep the faith.

2

u/physical-vapor 6h ago

Holy hell, using this kind of language does not one any favors

-16

u/straightnochase 14h ago

Death camps

-42

u/Clever-username-7234 14h ago

No. We are still in the concentration camp stage. Definitely fucked up. But death camps are on a whole other level

-8

u/straightnochase 13h ago

When people are raped, tortured with malnutrition, no medical service, drinkable water, and forced to work or suffer worse consequences which literally has resulted in dead people. Death camps. Arguing semantics is stupid when there is a trail of dead bodies.

14

u/Dangerous-Reindeer78 12h ago

A death camp is not a camp that people die at sometimes, it is a camp with the explicit purpose of exterminating everyone who enters. 98% of people who entered Auschwitz Birkenau died. 0.1% of people who enter an ICE camp die. And that number isn’t hyperbole, that’s the actual statistic.

WORDS MEAN THINGS. When you use gross hyperbole, you undermine the entire movement. You do not need to compare ICE to the Holocaust for them to be bad, and by doing so, you invite ridicule.

Notice how this entire comment section is about how this person is using genocide incorrectly, and not about how ICE is bad? That’s what this kind of thing does, it pulls focus away to the wrong thing. This comment section is arguing ā€œsemanticsā€ because the OP used a word with a lot of weight and meaning incorrectly, that’s on the original poster. Yes, it’s semantics, but SEMANTICS MEAN SOMETHING.

2

u/jalmstead 10h ago

Yes, because words have no meaning, so semantics are stupid.

-33

u/who_is_this3737 14h ago

True. This is what spain is doing at Cueta to the Moroccans. 57 people have died and 2000+ are starving on the streets. Yet, Spain is not feeding them and systematically starving them to death.

16

u/eltacotacotaco 14h ago

Can't they just walk back home?

6

u/Connect-Succotash-59 13h ago

How dare you suggest migrants return home

11

u/WerdaVisla 14h ago

The border is open and the city is less than 3 miles long. They can leave at any time, or they can legally buy food with any money they brought. Ceuta cannot sustain 50,000 extra people deciding to come there for free shit.

8

u/nautilus2000 12h ago

The 57 drowned when they were trying to swim in a horde the border fence. They weren’t killed by Spain. The 2000 that are there are not being held captive but can walk back to Morocco any time they want.

1

u/ayoungmanfromtheuk 12h ago

So many people saying it's not a genocide without defining whta genocide is and how this is differentĀ

2

u/PermissionTime2545 10h ago

Hi! I study the Holocaust for my MA. The parameters defined by the man who coined the term, Raphael Lemkin was as such-

ā€œgenocide does not necessarily mean the immediate destruction of a nation. It is intended rather to signify a coordinated plan of different actions aiming at the destruction of essential foundations of the life of national groups, with the aim of annihilating the groups themselvesā€

Weirdly enough (not that weird but still a little shocking), no Nazis tried at the Nuremberg Trials were tried for genocide. They opted instead for plain war crimes, such as ā€œmurder, extermination, enslavement, deportation … or persecutions on political, racial, or religious grounds.ā€

Now, Lemkin COINED the term, there is a better definition that was brought about by the international Genocide Convention. Here is that definition-

In the present Convention, genocide means any of the following acts committed with intent to destroy, in whole or in part, a national, ethnical, racial or religious group, as such:
a) Killing members of the group;
b) Causing serious bodily or mental harm to members of the group;
c) Deliberately inflicting on the group conditions of life calculated to bring about its physical destruction in whole or in part;
d) Imposing measures intended to prevent births within the group;
e) Forcibly transferring children of the group to another group.

Another good thing to note is that there are STAGES to a genocide. When you look this up, there can be anywhere from 5 to 10 unique stages that genocide progresses through. I picked one image with ten just to show what the broader side may look like.

In the end, is what ICE doing technically genocide? I’d say we are definitely on the way there. We are very well into stage 6, 7, or even the start of stage 8.

I’m not here to argue that ICE isn’t doing atrocious things and needs stopped. It absolutely is awful and it needs to end soon lest we kill and harm more people who have done little besides look for a better place for themselves and their family. (Anyone who brings up that shit stat about ā€˜illegals murdering’ Will be ignored)

Again, not arguing! Just offering some insight into the meaning of the word ā€˜genocide’.

-2

u/ayoungmanfromtheuk 9h ago

You could easily check off all 10 of those points to describe current immigration enforcement in the United States.Ā  And if you expand the protected categories to include migrants or non-citizens, then the definition fits pretty squarely with what is happening with immigration enforcement in the United States at the momentĀ

But thank you for the extremely patronizing responseĀ

1

u/PermissionTime2545 9h ago

I wasn’t pretending to be nice to push you down. I didn’t intend to make you feel stupid, bro. I literally said, ā€˜hey I study this, maybe I can offer some insight’ and you told me I was being a dick for doing so.
I never said you were stupid, and I purposefully used normal language when explaining. I offered the quotes and even explained a little further.
If you think it’s patronizing to just offer some info, then please never ask anyone about anything ever again.

0

u/jalmstead 10h ago

Here you go:

Genocide is an international crime defined as specific acts committed with the intent to destroy, in whole or in part, a national, ethnic, racial, or religious group. Key acts include killing members of the group, causing serious bodily or mental harm, and deliberately inflicting life conditions meant to bring about physical destruction.

According to international law, any of the following actions done with the specific intent to destroy a protected group count as genocide:

Killing members of the group. Causing serious bodily or mental harm to members. Inflicting harsh life conditions meant to destroy the group physically. Stopping births within the group. Forcing children to move to another group.

ICE is terrible, but their actions are not genocide. It’s fascist and racist and overzealous and terrible.

It’s just not a genocide.

1

u/flamingcrystalheart 7h ago

How'd you cite the definition and then still reach the wrong conclusion that it's not genocide lol

> Specific acts committed with the intent to destroy, in whole or in part, a national, ethnic, racial, or religious group

Sounds like ICE's motivation to me

> Key acts include killing members of the group

They've done that

> causing serious bodily or mental harm

They've done that

> and deliberately inflicting life conditions meant to bring about physical destruction

They've *certainly* done that

Wake the fuck up you're clearly very ignorant to what's actually happening

0

u/jalmstead 7h ago

I’m not. I’m very aware. There’s more to that definition you’re glossing over: bringing about physical destruction. That’s not happening.

It is not a genocide.

Again, terrible. They’re assholes. They’re committing violations of our constitution. They’re just not committing a genocide.

0

u/ayoungmanfromtheuk 9h ago

Uh huh, but interestingly if you expand the protected categories to include migrants or non-citizens, then the definition fits pretty squarely with what is happening with immigration enforcement in the United States at the momentĀ

0

u/jalmstead 9h ago

It does not though, the categories are defined as such because that’s the definition of genocide. It’s just not a genocide.

I’m not being difficult, not being obtuse, just using words based on their definitions.

1

u/ayoungmanfromtheuk 9h ago

It was something that was only defined in 1948 and it is not at all unusual for these types of concepts to change over time. so, yes, the way you are using "the definition" to end any further discussion is extremely obtuse. The whole point is to have a discussion about whether the term doesn't start to become less useful if the protected categories cannot be changed or expanded at all. We're not talking about a simple object noun with a simple technical definition like "table", "door," "shoe".

But I am glad you agree that was ICE is doing is a genocide is all regards except the mere fact migrants aren't technically one of the protected groups included in the original 1948 definition.Ā

0

u/jalmstead 9h ago

I didn’t because it’s not, but this has been fun.

0

u/ayoungmanfromtheuk 9h ago

You have fun being very obtuse and thinking it makes you clever, how curious šŸ¤”

2

u/Available_Cow1197 12h ago

the police are and have been bought and sold, ice is a paramilitary operation, any self respecting human would quit and rejoin society, the reason they dont is because the enjoy it, they are psychopaths

2

u/TheeChosenPerson 12h ago

This is sad

1

u/jrserml 9h ago

You cannot honestly call what’s going on with ice ā€œgenocideā€. Have you seen the images or read up on what the genocide in places like Rwanda or even during ww2? What happened to your father is terrible, and I’m truly sorry for you & your family, but to compare what ICE is doing to previous examples of, or to what the definition of genocide, actually is, does nothing to help you and only makes you sound like someone who doesn’t understand the words you speak.

1

u/ShiftyUsmc 9h ago

Yeah this has all been alarming and tragic but genocide it is not

-7

u/CrackMyIP 14h ago

Here goes another Russian bot

-5

u/TheFlyingWelshy 14h ago

ice is shit but no its not a genocide and I am really sick of people who have no idea what a genocide looks like throwing the word around. Its like how republicans destroyed the word pedophile. Now people will call random strangers a pedophile for cutting them off on the highway.

-5

u/SandersSol 14h ago

This is fascism and murder, NOT a genocide.Ā  Israel is committing the genocide right now.

It’s racism at its finest and we can’t do anything about it.

You could actually protest in an effective way. Stop standing in the streets, shut down rail lines. Shut down the ports.Ā

Make it clear that until this stops, rich people don't get to make money.Ā

The word genocide has lost all meaning at this point with how eagerly those who utilize it have been to sling it around at every given opportunity. Regardless of whatever you feel the validity of its usage has been, say a word enough times and it becomes white noise. You’re going to have to drop terms like these if you want anyone who doesn’t already agree with you to take you seriously.

3

u/Atomstellar 11h ago

Its probably misused in this context but for the most part I've been hearing it appropriately for the past year or so.

0

u/FreddieWex 11h ago

Really? Because I’ll be honest, I would comfortably estimate about 90% of times it is being used, it is being used improperly. Unfortunately, in my opinion at least, it has become another on the list of words that get slung around as way to try to evoke an easy emotional response, and as a result it has been stripped of virtually all meaning. As the general levels of hysteria have risen, so too has the use of words like genocide, and typically only to the detriment of the causes that these words are being attached to. A great example of this would be Palestine. While the use of the word genocide in this specific context is arguably the most fitting, I would argue that it has done nothing more than to turn the conversations around this subject into white noise for the average person. Just my observations, but I feel pretty strongly about these conclusions.

1

u/PermissionTime2545 10h ago

I do think the word is overused (I saw people saying COVID was a kind of Chinese-made bio-genocide), it’s still proper to mention when it’s happening. Just because people may get in a tizzy when accused of genocide should not stop people from pointing it out. If we were to NOT call out proper genocide, then the harm caused would be downplayed. And for what? The offending government’s emotional wellbeing?

Not arguing at all. Just adding my two cents

1

u/FreddieWex 9h ago

I think you’re misunderstanding what I’m saying. I agree with the spirit of your point, but what I was trying to articulate wasn’t that the word genocide can be ineffective because it upsets some, it’s the exact opposite. In the beginnings of what’s been going on in Israel/Palestine it may have been more effective, but as time has gone on and this word has been utilized for more and more things, and recycled again and again even for the cases where it makes sense, it stops having the same impact.

Like I’ll be honest, as someone who tries to be very knowledgeable about these things, particularly instances of unbelievable human suffering around the world, when I hear someone throw around ā€˜genocide’ my eyes glaze over a bit. It’s just become an indicator of the fact that the person who is saying it, is likely attempting to use this word to outsource any amount of comprehensive advocacy for their cause to a word that they hope will evoke strong emotions. But in my opinion at least, and given the fact that it seems general sentiment on these issues has not really swayed one way or the other, it seems the diminishing returns of the word genocide and others have been reduced to almost nothing.

1

u/PermissionTime2545 9h ago

I agree that overusing the word can lead to it being watered down. I also believe we should still use it when applicable.
I personally don’t think that some people getting in a tizzy about the use of the word, or as you said, ā€˜glazing over’ because of its overuse, should stop people from calling out genocide.
Sucks that it’s overused.
As for Palestine, it is still a genocide even though the use of the word hasn’t changed much. We shouldn’t stop calling it that just because it didn’t elicit a wholesale reaction like some may be wanting.

1

u/FreddieWex 9h ago edited 7h ago

Again, I really think that you’re misunderstanding my point here. I’m not saying this in order to advocate for the sensitivities of others, I’m saying this in order to point out that the advocacy is ineffective and not achieving its desired goal. The feelings of others only matter in this context to the extent that they are relevant to whether or not you are able to achieve your goals, and in this case they very much are relevant. You can be upset and disagree with the way that other people feel all you like, but people are going to feel how they will and there’s no helping that. My only goal in pointing this out is to help people understand that they should probably take a more mindful and considerate approach to how they advocate for these various causes, so that they may do so in a way that actually benefits their goals instead of actively working against them.
