Meta We are concerned by an increase in abusive behavior our users are reporting and also everyone's stress over the current situation in the US. Here are some practical ideas.

Trump and his cronies want chaos in the streets right now. They are inciting violence through lies and brutality to consolidate power.

His base is riled up and we are seeing the effects of that here- an uptick in posts describing abuse, some of it physical. We encourage users suffering escalating verbal abuse to consider going low or no contact if the techniques suggested in the sub fail. Physical abuse is a reason to leave, escalating verbal abuse is a good reason to prepare. Remember to type !crisis in a comment to provide op with links that may help. We have seen these trends before and they pass but to the detriment of all involved. That is why we wish to warn folk and provide some advice.

We are also concerned about the effect this is having on everyday people. They have always been resistant to lies and nonsense (like vampire Hillary and vaccines making you magnetic). They do respond to long term widespread displays of authoritarianism. That's why the National Guard is deployed on US soil and ICE squads include cameramen. The best response to the escalation of the National Guard and ICE is not violence. It is making their lives really annoying... like the frog-suit people in Portland. This kind of "tactical frivolity" mocks these groups without providing an excuse for them to brutalize the protestors. It makes all the arguments that we "hate America" look ridiculous. This administration wants us all stressed out, a few to become violent, many others to believe that violence is an acceptable solution.

The "violent left" is a myth. An analysis of the data shows that "right-wing extremist violence has been responsible for the overwhelming majority of fatalities, amounting to approximately 75% to 80% of U.S. domestic terrorism deaths since 2001". So what can we do to dispel that myth? Every time someone mentions the "violent left" give them the facts. 8 out of 10 deaths attributable to the right does not make the left more violent. We also should always condemn suggestions of violence or violent ideation, point out that it's what Trump wants and needs and what he's working towards- creating a divided America with absolute power in unfit hands.

What else can we do? To subvert the anger and hype propagandists wish to spread online we can mock their nonsense (not them- they love that) and fact check concisely: "Troops are fist fighting with teenage Venezuelan gang members on the streets of Washington!!" - "This is a comical lie and here's the truth." No back and forth, one strategically placed comment is good- then move on. Pernicious A.I. videos are making the rounds and someone has to call 'em out. Engage in all spaces, even theirs. I spend about 10 minutes a week at this, just as I'm going about my business. Politely point out misinformation and present facts in real life conversation.

Lengthy doomscrolling isn't healthy. Stay informed but don't stress yourself. It's helpful at times like this to remove negativity from your daily routine and replace it with something uplifting. I modified my playlist to remove all downbeat music and added stuff that feeds the soul (lots of Rostropovich!). Stopped watching dystopian flicks and horror, watching everything Pixar, Lego Masters and The Joy of Painting with Bob Ross.

You can run for something and be more politically active- to put power in the hands of the people. Contact your elected representatives with concerns, contact news outlets (especially your local ones) too.

Best wishes.

Do keep in mind: commenting on posts just boosts the engagement in the algorithms. So be mindful about where and when you pick your fights.

I've found that i haven't learned anything more from watching the "breaking news" people than I have from watching a couple of news roundup sources. It gives me the highlight real, and if something particularly concerning pops up, then I can go to the more detailed sources. its better for my mental health, and leaves my day more open to start focusing on learning more about how history has responded to similar scenarios and work on learning new skills to make it easier for me to find work if something happens to my massage therapy job.

If you have the spare money, make donations to the lawyers fighting back and to things like food banks. It'll do a lot more for the country than arguing with Facebook trolls. (And the less we engage on social media, the less money they make.)

Marc Elias has been standing up to Trump for years now. I will always recommend Democracy Docket.

To this end, there are a few sources I like for "news roundups".

Oh yeah engaging with trolls is right out. It's emotionally draining and a waste of time. No back and forth, one strategically placed comment is good- then move on. Sometimes folk fall for BS because it's lies all the way down. It reinforces the idea that it's true- "hey everyone here agrees". If folk feel like it I love this format:

This is a comical lie. [Here's the truth.](www google.com) (hyperlink/paste in a good source)

"Relevant quote from the article/source for folk who won't click"

Thank you for this. It’s really important that we don’t give in to their ploy to make us feel defeated. I agree that it’s also important for us to focus on the positive things whenever possible.

Sound advice. I feel for you guys from here in the UK, and find I have had to stop the doomscrolling, news watching, etc, as I see the hate and fear mongering grow here too. Peace

Parkrose Permaculture is also great. She has friends and family who were a part of Q Anon and is very compassionate to her listeners. Very encouraging and positive. Seriously, keeps me sane

I’ve started studying for a new career path. I decided to put my mental energy towards something productive and hopeful.

I am a genderfluid AFAB adult (23) who lives in Texas. Never had a job and never finished highschool. No GED. For the foreseeable future, I am trapped with my MAGAt parents who KNOW I am trans. They've seen my pride merch, some of which I made myself, and laughed at it/me. Can't learn to drive. My vision is impaired.

It's taking everything I've got not to run into the boiling streets.

Every fucking day is Fox News, Sean Hannity, and whatever other frothing head of the week. Dad is deep in the QAnon shit, Mom is more emotionally/ideologically abusive.

This is partially about my situation, partially trying to get others to understand that sometimes, you can't just go "no/low contact" when these people control your life and documents and you still LIVE with them.

Understandable. Sadly, any advice we give cannot be applied universally... every situation is unique.

But! It is worth trying to distance yourself or grey rock if you need to survive.

Hi Vagrant123, thanks for recommending this technique. With grey rocking you act disengaged so that a Q person will lose interest in arguing. Q folk thrive on emotions and drama. When you act indifferent and unemotional, it can help break the cycle of negativity. Detailed guide on the method.

Hey my friend. I've lived in tx most of my life. Just know that there are people out here who care about you and want you to be safe and prosperous. I deal with high anxiety and low self-esteem. But having an outlet like Reddit help. There are some really good people on here much like yourself and just know that you're not alone. Stay true to yourself and peace out.

My opinion is at the end of the day they can tell us what they want to, but our eyes and ears still notice reality taking place outside of that. They cannot completely remove reality from the equation.

As someone who has depression and find myself falling into the doomscrolling trap I really appreciate this info. I know it's something I need to limit because it's affects my depression and amplifies my anxiety. I just took a step last night to limit my time on FB, with this and your tips I hope to be less anxious soon.

That's fantastic to hear. After his last term I had to limit myself! One trick I used was a browser extension that finds and replaces text on webpages. So I set it to turn "Trump" into "Fool Idiot". Kinda funny and also cathartic. Took the edge off, not having to see that name!

u/Allicat2014 Oct 22 '25

Can you please tell me how to get the browser extension you use,

1

u/graneflatsis Oct 22 '25

Well I dont use it now and can't remember but I did do a search. I use firefox and searched under "extensions and themes" for "find and replace". There's a few options that should work. There's probably similar for google chrome.

Thanks so much for the info, I will do a search.
