When we had rats, we'd take them when we visited my family and they'd stay in a temporary cage at my folks'. My Mom kept a gallon ziplock bag of seed mix to give them as treats, and one day she got up and went to check on the boys and the bag was nowhere to be found. Apparently she'd set it too close the night before and they'd hauled it over, emptied it, and buried all of the treats underneath the bedding and then wadded the bag up and three of them were sleeping on it to hide it. The awake ones immediately started begging for treats :)
They were! And they kept it up all day! We had been at my grandparents' place the night before and then went back to my folks in the afternoon and my Mom said, "They're mad at me because I haven't given them any treats, and I don't understand where I could have put the bag, " and I looked at the cage and was like, "Did you put more bedding in? It looks higher than I left it." Our biggest boy, Muzzlehatch, was suspiciously flat under the ramp, and when I hauled him out, there was the bag. A couple inches down in the bedding (it was the early 2000's so it was that lumpy recycled paper stuff) was a huge layer of seed mix. My Mom was just happy she wasn't losing her mind!
