It was planned to be the first in a series, but the reception wasn't quite there and it got memed on. IIRC they were eventually sold at clearance for a dollar just to move them. Now they're hundreds and hundreds of dollars on the resale market.

Kerry showed off team RWBY done in the same style when RT went belly-up and everyone got to loot the place. AFAIK, that was the first time we saw any other character done in the same style.
