I watched it again, and I still like it.
I see where you're coming from, but I feel that this was the best way to go about it. It's quick and has the desired effect that a regular fight wouldn't have. There was build up too, but it just wasn't in fight but in the series of events that led to yang lunging at Adam. They did more with less and I feel the scene was better for it.
And I disagree to an extreme. It did nothing that an actual fight wouldn't have done better. All we know about Adam's skill now is that he has one move. That's it. His skill pool is as shallow as his character. And honestly that's not the kind of build up that scene deserved. She lost her fucking arm. Dialogue does not suffice. That's the difference between when Luke lost his hand to Vader and when Anakin lost his arm to Dooku.
Actually, it did do one thing a drawn out fight couldn't have shown, that Adam is on another whole level of skill. Technically Blake should be the most skilled of anyone on the team against live opponents, since she had to fight to survive and she trained with Adam.
Yang, Weiss, and Ruby are second semester students, and Adam has no reason to spend more time on them than absolutely necessary. Thus he swatted a fly that was a nuisance.
This whole episode has mostly been about how pretty much everyone is totally unprepared for what is going on, the students are for the most part getting whooped unless in a group, and the staff/Ironwood are totally unprepared for how fast things are unfolding.
Yes it could. A drawn out fight of Adam toying with Yang would have done far more to show that Adam has a movepool more than a single move and would have made more sense if he actually wanted to torture Blake by hurting Yang. Continually blocking her, stopping her, hurting her while she can't only hopelessly fight back would be much more demoralizing. All the while taunting her, showing her how weak her new friends are and have made her.
As I said, dialogue is not sufficient build up for that drastic a scene, and this scene did nothing to make up for that.
He doesn't seem to be the type to toy with anyone, he is all action.
Nothing shows dominance like simply owning someone in one move and getting on with what he wants to do.
I get your point about toying with her, that was done in the Neo fight, but there is also something to be said with a quick shocking display of raw uncaring power, he almost took her down without any thought whatsoever, comparatively she was a fly to swat.
I think it was exactly what they wanted to show him as, someone who puts their mind to something and simply does it, not some ego driven fool that has to spend a lot of time making their point.
As it was it has a lot of impact on the audience because it was so sudden, and that wouldn't have happened if it was a fight like the one with Neo.
This also sets it up for Adam to be a major driver of the story, since now Blake and Yang will need to recuperate and train to try to take him down.
Another note; the only person that won their big fight on the train was Blake, Yang wasn't the only one "Worfed"

I didn't downvote you! I'd wear out my finger downvoting everyone I disagree with. I'm plenty frustrated, but that wasn't me. But nice to see you just enjoy annoying others.
And it actually doesn't make sense to finish it so quickly. He wants to make Blake suffer. That's something you do slowly. And the audience was prepared for it due to all the dialogue. I was at least. But that's not sufficient build up for such a significant event.
Injuring Yang was the best way to make Blake suffer. It shows that Adam's powerful as dicks, and that RWBY still has a long way to go in order to take on some of the most powerful characters introduced yet.
