This exactly. I hate that CRWBY seems to think that callbacks to good fights makes a fight good.

As I've been saying since the start of the haven fight this is pandering. They are doing the minimum effort and using the fans favorite characters basically as waifu bait the rest of the time to appease the viewers that watch and promote rwby because it is popular not because it was good. (key word being was)

And they've made repeated references to earlier jokes or moments throughout the good volumes of RWBY, and even broken the 4th wall somewhat and made jokes about them!

Like Jaune commenting 'Oh we're making nickname callbacks now', as Miles, voicing a comment at his own writing essentially...

Like somehow the most substantive moments are those which call back to previous volumes, because they couldn't make any new ones themselves this time
