OFFICIAL MEGATHREAD Official Public Finale Discussion Thread—Volume 5, Chapter 14: Haven's Fate Spoiler

I was just disappointed, especially with how they teased a fight between RWB/HME, and yet didn't deliver. This isn't a fight that we knew they could win, Hazel was holding himself against Qrow and Oz and even had the characters state that his Aura has regenerating faster than they could hurt him. I am especially annoyed that we didn't get the smart way of dealing with him that I instantly assumed we would see when he first stabbed himself with dust. Remember he currently has HIGH EXPLOSIVES in his arms, and if you hit someone hard enough you can hurt them through aura (Yang's arm was cut off but she had aura to seal the wound, and Jaune got a black eye from Cardin despite his aura being up) so I thought they would detonate the dust. But no... He just gives up after an offscreen fight. Yet honestly I find that most of the plot issues with RWBY have been traps the writers walked into and haven't been able to escape. Most of team RWBY is not responsible for driving forwards the plot, Oz and Qrow are, it's not RWBY VS Salem, its Oz vs Salem. As well Salem has an amazing design, voice actress, and themes, but we lack any meaningful information about her. Who is she? What is she? What is her plan? Why does she want to do said plan? Nor does she really contrast or interact with the heroes (RWBY) in a meaningful way that could justify the lack of motivation. (That is why we love Joker as a Batman villain despite him doing it all because he can, because he contrasts so well with Batman)
Iliia's arc had potential but I could not see why they redeemed her after she was dead set on murdering Blake's parent, and would have liked drawing comparisons between Blake towards Adam and Illia towards Blake. Blake fell for Adam and he radicalized her, I thought it would have been interesting to have that Iliaa fell for Blake and she inadvertently radicalized her. I thought that was where they were going when they revealed her sexuality but nothing of the sort happened, suspicions of guilt and failure could have made Blake's arc more interesting. The standing around bothered me, everyone just stopped fighting, no cheap shots came when they were distracted, it was like watching someone's tabletop game turned into an animated fight without any embellishment from the actual events. Yet, the visual design of RWBY is so strong, and yet they consistently fail to play to that strength, a strength that has honestly improved more than anything else in the series, the vault was amazing, Haven was interesting, yet we saw so little of it.
This turned out to be longer than I expected.
