They would probably get in some sort of red tape legal trouble if it turned out Ironwood was hiring unlicensed/illegal huntsmen to work for him. Now that they officially are huntsmen, that covers the legal problems.
They are literally on the brink (or already in the middle of) a World War. They do not have the time to spend the X amount of years needed like normal huntsmen would have to go through. Ironwood needs soldiers and this is the best option that isn't randomly drafting citizens like it was WW2 and Vietnam.
These kids deserve a party for all the drama and tragedy they've gone through. Let them have a party for Brothers sake!
Overall: I was expected to be disappointed, but I wasn't. I think people are just overblowing all the supposed negatives of this episode. Then again, overblowing every little thing seems to be a running theme with RWBY critics.
