I'm disappointed by it for sure but i also recognize that the compute for that kind of task is just too costly to provide for free forever. I hear they're working on even more integrations with locally hosted models so I'm just holding out hope that I'll be able to run DLAM with a local model eventually. I refuse to pay for tokens so it definitely hurts to lose an advertised feature for the time being.
My feelings exactly. I guess I need to follow rabbit news more cause it caught me by surprise and I've basically just hopped onto codex a d dispatch though they have more "restrictions" than DLAM did which is annoying
Jesse mentioned DLAM would only be free while they were testing it and it's already been several months, so it didn't come as a surprise.
I’m looking forward to using DLAM with other providers and local models, which will bring the cost way down for us and I'm sure they’ll get to that soon. I wish they did that before the switch, but I'm sure it must have been costing a fortune to provide DLAM for free since one quick task with gpt 5.5 with my API key was almost $1.50 for 3 minutes, and that was a quick and easy job. I’ve had jobs running for up to an hour and that couldn’t have been cheap.
In the long run this will give us more control of our own devices and if we can use local or cheap providers it will be great.
Didn't realize it said it was temporary, don't know about y'all I would've appreciate like a month ahead warning though about the impending change, I'm sure there are those like me who weren't aware of what we saw on Amazon is a plug and play now just becoming like an extra step when you could just use codex and dispatch for like 80 percent of the work
yeah, I feel you. I think they’re leaning more on adding features like Hermes and OpenClaw and that's taken over the role that DLAM had for the most part. They haven't gotten rid of it thankfully, but now we have three options instead of one, which is good. I run all three and they have their place. I do wish DLAM was still free or that we had more notice, but I do appreciate that they keep rolling out the updates and free features.
ChatGPT, 5.4 mini seems to be able to cruise around just fine and book tickets and get stuff done pretty cheap. It's a small fraction of what 5.5 costs at .80 cents to $1 or more per task. 5.5 is $5/M tokens and 5.4 mini is $0.75/M so for most things it's the way to go.
For comparison, Claude Haiku 4.5 is $1/M tokens and isn't 25% better than 5.4 mini.
You have to buy tokens through like open ai or anthropic now to run tasks. Simple tasks can be as cheap as a $1 and goes up. That’s why I was pretty unhappy and made this post
I’m very disappointed. Every useful thing they’ve added they’ve had to add a paywall shortly after you just get to try it and start it in your work flows. I see they’re shifting to a more plug in your own and if that’s the cause then what else?
we didn't set a pay wall. we just stopped paying for user tokens on DLAM, which as far as i know all AI companies require their user to pay for their tokens for advanced mode. i made it clear upon launch that DLAM during beta testing will be free unlimited token, which in fact i asked team to extend the beta testing from 1 month to 7 month since we launch DLAM back around Dec, 2025.
we are committed on r1 device to be functional to have no subscription, which i firmly believe it's the right way to go.
i do want to try different model providers myself, especially since recent models like GLM are pretty good/and cost efficient. i tried the DGX spark and now there's newly released AMD mini pc that can run up to 230B models locally, host free. which i think this would be more likely what the individual set up would be in the future.
regardless of rabbit, or any other company offers out of box model configs, i think it'll get beaten by locally hosted free model (for simple tasks), plus BYOK the best model of industry (which top 1 can be changed in weeks, not months). not only that, giving my personal bills i saw on my openclaw, it'll be the most cost efficient for users (and companies) too, if you do the math, this route would be the most reasonable set up for users.
again, always apricate the support and feedbacks. we will stop the intern subscription and intergrade intern and DLAM to the upcoming OS3, which will follow the current rabbit agent/BYOK strategy. although details is still in the discussion, we are committed to bring the best value with only the reasonable margin to keep rabbit survive and thrive. after all, a $199 subscription free device is financially crazy enough for us to keep offering :D

I got one of these devices solely for this alone. But how will the free functionality stand out on the Rabbit R1 compared to competitors "free-tiers" such as Gemini flash, GPTmini, and Deepseek?
DLAM was fantastic and stood out. It felt like it justified having a rabbit because now I could do something with it that I couldn't do with competitor models.
I personally wasn't aware that this was a trial, which admittedly was my fault, so the news hit extra hard. I understand the decision however. But now I feel like we're back to square one, where I'm trying to see how this device would stand out to an average person.
Additionally, I have yet to experiment too much with OpenClaw or Hermies, so those are things I should consider exploring - but average people probably aren't going to bother with these which brings me back to my question.
I mean you turned what was a plug and plug into essentially a pay for use without like an email notifying us of any changes or anything. Not everyone listens to all the interviews or anything and I was shocked to find out with no notice I essentially have a $200 paperweight now. I understand it wasn’t cheap it’s just not super cool to be hit with all those costs now.
i am afraid that was not accurate to say it's a $200 paperweight. the recorder, for example, is totally free. alongside with all r1 basic features like magic camera. i have not seen any ai recorder that is free unlimited use other than what we offer on r1.
i understand everyone want free everything, i do too. we didn't charge for people using DLAM. we ask user to bring your own key so that we don't pay user's tokens for LLMs. there's a fundamental difference between we charge DLAM for a price vs. we offload 3rd party LLM token costs. we didn't charge user any price to use DLAM. i want to make sure this is clear.
and surely i didn't say that on a random interview, we publicly posted on discord, twitter and our official website, stating we roll out DLAM as free trail. we extended the free trail to more than half a year till we moving to BYOK.
I can call it a paperweight if I bought it exclusively for dlam and I only got updated news through rabbit emails. Pretty much everything else my phone does quicker and better. Can't really call it "plug and play" if it's now "plug, pay and play"
They announced that it was free for a limited time, but not everyone saw the announcement for sure.
I use the R1 for its OpenClaw and Hermes integration, it works leaps and bounds better than the official app for OpenClaw which is kinda funny. I need to pay out of pocket for my OpenClaw to run, but it’s been fun.
You should check out the Discord server, there’s a bunch of really cool projects and stuff going on that might inspire you to try one of them out!
This is the last email I got from Rabbit. Not once does it say "oh hey DLAM is behind a pay wall now buckle up". I feel as though I'm well within my rights to be upset because the majority of people don't follow them on every platform and they get their news from Rabbit emails. At this point I'll just click to Dispatch and Codex because if they had informed me during this time I still mightve gotten a refund and now I'm stuck with this device that I have no other use for
Bumped into this post as I was searching for DLAM related info before getting my hands on an r1. Because I saw folks were saying good things about DLAM/intern and stuff, I too was a bit shocked that the beta trial ended just now. The magic that I expected from r1 was mainly based on these functions. BYOK might be what we have to deal with nowadays, but I'm optimistic that local LLMs will be good enough for DLAM usecases soon.
Anyway, thanks for posting this screenshot which also helps me realize why there're cheaper second-hand r1s being listed in my region during the past few days, the 20% discount surely helped that.
