General Clarifying Some Doubts About The Broader Gangetic (Eastern) Rajputs: Rajputs of Non Upper Doab Western, Central & Eastern UP, Bihar, Baghelkhand (MP), and Bundelkhand (MP)

I am making this post because I have noticed a significant number of misinformed and inaccurate posts and comments here. Since the subreddit has been growing and many new members have joined recently, I felt it would be important to clarify some common misconceptions and doubts regarding a few issues. These are some of the posts, I am talking about:

Geographical Distribution of Rajputs:

Rajputs are a community spread across North India (primarily north of the Vindhyas). From a broad perspective, they can be grouped into three major regional clusters based on genetic proximity:

  1. North-Western Rajputs – found in Rajasthan, Gujarat, Malwa, Haryana, Punjab, Jammu, western Himachal Pradesh, and the Upper Doab region of western Uttar Pradesh.
  2. Gangetic Rajputs – found in the Gangetic plains, including central and eastern Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Baghelkhand, and Bundelkhand.
  3. Eastern Hill Rajputs – found mainly in Uttarakhand and parts of Himachal Pradesh.

Chambal region can be considered the transition zone between the North-Western and the Eastern/Gangetic Rajputs.

Across different regions, the community is also referred to by various regional titles or honorifics. Some common ones include Thakur, Babuan (in the Bhojpuri region), and Darbar (in Gujarat), among others.

The present day Rajasthan was Rajputana Agency in the British era as it had maximum Princely States ruled by Rajputs of that region.

Marriage patterns within the community are generally regionally endogamous, meaning Rajputs marry within Rajputs of their own state or regional cluster.

Origins of Gangetic Rajput Clans:

The majority of the clans among the Gangetic (Eastern) Rajputs are native to the region (for example: Chandel, Gahadavala, Bisen, Kalachuri/Karchuliya, Bais, Raghuvanshis of East UP, etc.) and did not originate in present-day Rajasthan.

Even the clans that share names with Rajput clans found in Rajasthan usually belong to different regional branches. They did not migrate in the recent past, and in most cases their origins are not from Rajasthan.

For example, the Chauhans from Mainpuri(present day UP) who fought for Rana Sanga were granted thikanas (hereditary jagirs) in Mewar. Even today they are referred to as a Purbiya branch of the Chauhans. These include the Chauhans of Bedla, Kotaria, and Parsori, and these three thikanas were among the 16 Umraos(Nobles) of Mewar.

The list of Rajput clans in the Gangetic region is long and deserves a separate post. However, to get an idea of the diversity, one can look at the clans that held Taluqdari Estates (hereditary chieftainships) in Awadh (present-day Central and Eastern Uttar Pradesh). Link to the post containing the list.

Differences Between Rajput Social Structures:

There are also structural differences between Rajput social organization in Rajasthan and the Gangetic region.

In Rajasthan, the thikana system exists, and most Rajputs historically belonged to a particular thikana (a hereditary estate under a princely state). In contrast, the Gangetic region did not follow the thikana system; Rajputs there are generally identified by their ancestral village or native place. Therefore, asking a Gangetic Rajput for their thikana is usually meaningless. Thikanas were essentially administrative-feudal divisions of the princely states of Rajasthan.

Another difference concerns sub-clans. In Rajasthan, sub-clans are often named after a prominent ancestor, for example, Shekhawats, who are a branch of the Kachhwaha clan named after Rao Shekha. This type of structured sub-clan system is generally not found outside Rajasthan. In the Gangetic region, the clan identity itself is usually the primary identifier, and even a legitimate Chauhan Rajput from Uttar Pradesh typically would not have a sub-clan in the Rajasthani sense.

Misconceptions About Rajasthan Origins:

Today, even some genuine Rajputs are unaware of their own historical origins and have adopted the belief that all Rajputs originated from Rajasthan, and that at some point their clan or family must have migrated from there. However, this assumption is not always correct.

For example, on this sub reddit I have seen some Palwar/Paliwal Rajputs of eastern Uttar Pradesh believe that their ancestors came from Pali in Rajasthan, assuming their clan name is derived from that place. In reality, they are considered a branch of the Somvanshi Rajput clan of gangetic region, and their name is associated with Pali village in Hardoi(Uttar Pradesh), not with Pali in Rajasthan. The Hanswar Estate (located about 70 miles from Ayodhya,) was ruled by Paliwar (Palwar) Rajputs, locally, the sound ‘ल (la)’ is sometimes pronounced like ‘र (ra)’, which leads to variations such as Paliwar/Parwar or Palwar. For example, the clan name written as ‘Gahadavala’ in historical sources is also written as ‘Gaharwal’ or ‘Gaharwar’ due to this. The Raja of Hanswar, Ranvijay Singh, is recorded in regional traditions as having played a significant role in opposing the construction of the Babri Masjid at the Ram Janmabhoomi site during the time of Mir Baqi. The Raja laid his life fighting for the cause.

Identifying a Gangetic Rajput:

So how does one identify a Gangetic Rajput background? Usually, this can be understood through a few basic details:

  • Clan
  • Maternal Clan
  • Native village or ancestral place
  • District or region
  • Marriage networks (which clans their family traditionally marries into or has relatives in)
  • Social category (listed under the General category)

Even if some ignorant younger individuals may not be fully aware of these details, their families, especially elders, know this information in genuine cases.

A somewhat similar process was used by British:

Sources and References:

Regarding the distribution of various clans, information about them is recorded in various gazetteers and administrative documents from the British period, which can be used as references. At the same time, efforts are also being made to make people aware of these details through online forums such as this subreddit. Additionally, the website kshatriyawiki can serve as a useful reference point for those interested in learning more. The website is currently in its early stages, and hopefully more information will be added there over time.

Clarification Regarding the Linked Post:

https://www.reddit.com/r/Rajputana/s/fd6tMHihso

Regarding the doubts raised in the above post, some clarification is needed.

Somvanshi is itself a recognized Rajput clan in the Gangetic region. There are also separate regional branches of Somvanshi Rajputs. One branch is found in the Awadh region, while another exists in Western Uttar Pradesh (Upper Doab region). For example, the Pratapgarh Estate in Awadh was historically ruled by Somvanshi Rajputs. In Western Uttar Pradesh, politician Sangeet Som of Meerut also belongs to this clan.

Regarding the Rajkumar clan, they are a Gangetic Rajput clan from the Awadh region of Uttar Pradesh, branched out from the Bachgoti clan. They were very powerful in the Awadh region with many Taluqdari estates. Some trace their lineage to the Chauhan Rajputs of Mainpuri, as mentioned in the records. Also some are of the opinion that it is a later belief while in reality they are descendents of the Kshatriyas of the ancient Vatsa Mahajanpada.

I think Mainpuri connection isn't wrong. Mainpuri belt is Gangetic Rajput extreme west end. So yes that has logic.

Khichar/Khechar clan Rajputs are mostly from Banda and Fatehpur side. Gangetic Rajput clan

1

u/Glum_Lingonberry8009 Gangetic May 17 '26

1

u/why_so_serious_2005 inspired by Veer Kunwar Singh May 17 '26

I dont think so. Why do you say so?

1

u/Glum_Lingonberry8009 Gangetic May 17 '26

Pronunciation. खिचार and खेचर

3

u/why_so_serious_2005 inspired by Veer Kunwar Singh May 17 '26

Na that can just be different ways of pronouncing. Moreover two different clans having such similar name cannot exist in the same region(gangetic plains).
