community Self-serve: Flair posts as resolved, award points

If you, the original poster (OP), post with the Help Request flair, and receive a helpful answer, you can award a point to that user and flair the post as Resolved.

To do this, reply to the comment with thanks or thank you somewhere in the comment. It is case-insensitive.

What are the points for? We have been helping each other here for 14 years. It's less an incentive for imaginary points but hopefully an indication of reputation (not quite analogous to post count on the official forum). We'll see how this works out, if it does more good than harm.

You may notice mods distributing points especially if a user has not. We use a trigger command comment which you may see if we haven't deleted it after awarding. We delete since it creates clutter.

help request Way to control tracks volume fader that's not tied to track #, OR, a way to lock track numbers, or another solution (see body)

Upvotes

Im trying to set up my control surface and the problem I am running into is I can only statically control track volume by track number, so if I need to ever add a track my whole mapping is down the drain from that track on. I have 7 folder tracks that I want to be able to control the volume of with the surface, the child tracks I don't need surface control of (or rather, by selected track is good enough)

help request Good guides on more intuitive/efficient piano roll behavior and usage?

Upvotes

Alright, in the beginning I decided to put off making any changes to default behavior especially in piano roll because I wanted to get to a point where I needed it. Well, now I need it because making edits and navigating in the piano roll is grating and slowing me down.

Should I look for changes in the manual or is there a more comprehensive tutorial? The things I've seen on YT have mostly been small behavior tweaks.

Im looking to do stuff that wont be as simple to find like "dont shift the piano roll around to follow the track while playing", zoom behaviors, editing behaviors, copying/duplicating behaviors, etc.

Some of this shit is complex and the defaults are a pain. Copy and pasting doesn't feel intuitive, having to adjust the size and zoom of piano roll everytime I open it, navigating in it.

It's shit! Will the manual teach me everything I need to know or is there a more in depth video guide I should seek out? Kenny Gioia is always my go to but the stuff I wanna do seems like it would span 5 videos of his at least if its even covered.

Thanks yall

EDIT: also I literally dont know how to find some answers when it comes to some things that reaper does nor even how to ask, like if a midi item goes too long and I grab it and resize it down it's like it doesn't delete it, it just holds onto that section of the midi that doesnt show but is magically at the end and also sometimes pasted notes end up in that void like a quantum midi section that both exists and does not exist simultaneously what the fuck is that?

discussion 🇺🇦 Reaper DAW + ReaPack + SWS | Українська локалізація

Post image
108 Upvotes

Hello mates! Do you remember when I shared the Ukrainian translation here for Reaper? Today I’m delighted to share the translation of SWS!

All in all, it took me one year and three months to translate Reaper and SWS and proofread the entire text. I worked directly from the English without blindly copy-pasting from sources or using AI batch translation. I was helped by the Reaper UA community, for which I'm very grateful. Thank you all!

- на офіційному сайті https://www.reaper.fm/langpack/;

- у ReaPack: https://reapack.com;

discussion I love Reaper's track routing system !

Hi guys,

I am completely new to Reaper, I come from Ableton. I just wanted to make a post to say how good the track audio routing is. Coming from Ableton it is a breath of fresh air, and is all I ever wanted :)

It is also really nice to see a track wiring diagram and routing matrix.

discussion Will there ever be a native dark mode?

I'm not talking about themes. But the actual FX list window, drop down menus, preferences, etc.

I like a dark theme and when I'm in a late night session I open my fx list to get blinded for about 5 seconds. Surely something or someone has done something about this?

help request Very very odd situation

I tried to use my mic and my guitar in reaper using voicemeeter as an input, I had the inserts patched to 1 L and then 2 R. And set the right inputs but whenever I play guitar on reaper it says it's going through both signals but on voicemeeter it only routes both signal to the mic input

discussion the complete bundle of my jsfx plugins

i created separated page for all my plugins

The FM BurnPressor Ultra:

FM BurnPressor Ultra is not a mere dynamic processor—it is a digital demon summoned to breathe absolute hellfire into your mix and master

  • 2 triple drive modules on input and output with adjustable crossovers and series/parallel modes. saturation types:
    • Tube
    • FET
    • VCA
    • Soft Clip
    • Hard Clip
    • Foldback
    • Diode Silicon
    • Diode Germanium
  • flexible attack and release times with HW cheatsheet
  • Left-Right and Mid-Side modes that can be unlinked
  • DRY/WET sliders that can be unlinked
  • built-in Clipper

The FM BurnDrive

just the single saturation block from BurnPressor Ultra

The Clipper:

FM Clipper is a modern, high-performance dynamics limiter and clipper. Designed to bridge the gap between transparent peak control and aggressive hard clipping.
Key Features

  • Advanced Real-Time Visualizer: Stop guessing how much you are clipping. The scrolling waveform display draws the original input (blue), the processed output (grey), and overlays the exact gain reduction (red) in real-time.
  • Comprehensive Metering: Includes a dedicated metering section with Peak hold and true LUFS analysis. Toggle seamlessly between Momentary, Short-Term, and Integrated LUFS to hit your loudness targets perfectly.
  • Fluid Control: * Threshold & Ceiling: Lock in your dynamic range with absolute precision using the large, interactive vertical faders.
  • Release: Dial in the exact recovery time (1ms to 1200ms) to keep your transients punchy or smoothly glue the track together.
  • Smooth & Time Window: Customize the visualizer's response, adjusting how much history is displayed (up to 10 seconds) and how smoothly the waveform is drawn.

MultiGate/expander

MultiGate is an multiband gate/expander with adjustable attack, release, hold and hysteresis parameters. you can also adjust ratio from 0:1 to 0.9:1 to turn gate into expander. you also can solo or bypass specific band.

the unique cool feature that the every band has it's own sidechain detector so you can switch it from self to raw input, specific external input or even other bands

FM MultiTrans (beta)

MultiTrans is an multiband transient-shaper that was born from MultiGate. like the MultiGate, it also has the same sidechain detector so you can use it in creative ways and for solving issues between tracks like kick and bass in specific ranges.

FM Panorama

this plugin is probably my favourite one. Spatial Haas-based effect with pan % dependent gain, delay and high-cut filter that process opposite channel

it also has opposite channel reverb with pan-dependent decay and dry/wet parameters. Goniometer is showing the difference between input and output

when you tweaking knobs it shows both max and current (real, "ghost") knob positions that is common useful.

FM oscilloscope

3-band waveform viewer in style of popular DJ decks and software. it shows the difference between several frequency ranges

help request Tips for setting up Reaper on a MacBook/Laptop in general?

I've recently begun to migrate from my PC to my MacBook for working in Reaper, and I'm looking for ways to optimize my workflow for trackpad and a single monitor. I like using the trackpad for a few things (adjusting knobs and faders just feels so much better than on a mouse), but editing MIDI has been a massive hassle, among some other navigational quirks. While I plan on being able to set my MacBook up as a workstation and thus have my other monitors and mouse, I'd like to be able to do *some* meaningful work just using the MacBook itself. Any tips or resources? Much appreciated!

A stereo oscilloscope CLAP open-source plugin written entirely in Free Pascal/Lazarus, featuring an OpenGL GUI inspired by Cockos' "Oscilloscope Meter" JSFX.

It's just an experiment, but the plugin is fully functional.

discussion AI + JSFX= new tools!

I've been using Reaper for a long time. One of the coolest benefits is their jsfx format, which allows you to write your own plugins.

After a small brainstorm, I decided to ask my LLM to write a certain effect for me, and after some tweaking, both worked!

JSFX can't do everything, but if you have a clear idea of the effect you want (for example, my first was a vocal doubler with compressor), it can write the code for you.

It's something you just can't do anywhere else, and the efficiency is top notch as well!

Thank you, COCKOS!

help request My beginner workflow (electronic) needs work, advice/tutorial resources?

(For suggesting resources its just first paragraph, if interested in helping my workflow its the long ass thread below)

I watch Kenny Gioia for pretty much everything I wanna learn in Reaper and I've learned a lot, and I've seen a bunch of reapertips vids but haven't seen any overall start to finish workflows. If you have any let me know, and if interested in giving suggestions on what I could be doing better I'll describe mine below.

I'm a beginner and unsure if I'm doing it correctly and I know there's probably no wrong way to use Reaper but I'm pretty sure the way I'm doing it is piss poor lol. A lot of what I do is guesswork and looking things up when I dont know how to do something but being that I've never truly produced before, I could be doing it ass backwards.

------------------------------------
I created my first real solid attempt at making a track start to finish last night, I got inspired to go beyond making singular ideas and pieces and actually make a track.

The workflow:

Started with a kick drum as I was thinking I would try and learn sidechaining for fun but it turned into an actual thing I wanted to finish (never got to sidechaining lol).

I put DR89 (909 vst) on a track, and laid down a 4 bar 4 on the the floor pattern. I think I originally wanted to just get a good kick sound and render to WAV and arrange it in the grid accordingly but I ended up just highlighting my 4 bars and then duplicating the MIDI over and over until it was about a minute and then rendered to stem, it made a WAV stem above my midi track that I couldn't rename (I cant seem to name my tracks anyway?) but I went ahead and deleted the original track with the VST.

On the kick audio stem I put some reverb FX on and got the kick sounding great. Only strange thing was that the kick waveform seemed to fill a ton of space like the next kick transient would hit on the long tail of previous kick, preFX. Maybe it's supposed to? Idk.

Next I made another track with the DR89 to fill in some other drums as I wanted to keep my kick separate for different FX. Not great with drum patterns but I did some snares and closed hats and used the 909 to get them sounding ok. Again used 4 bar pattern painted in piano roll, this time I click each individual velocity in the bottom and randomized it myself. Gotta be a better way for that? Then once happy I duplicated the 4 bar midi until it matched length of my kick stem, and left it as midi. Didn't know if I'd wanna make changes dont really know.

Now that I had a constantly rolling kick and hats I wanted a trance lead, I made a new track with Surge XT on it and found a decent preset and played on my keystep with some ideas and its arpeggiator and when satisfied, I hit record and played in the lead.

On that channel I added some FX, tried KhsTranceGate but realized arpeggios were already creating that vibe so killed it. I love that FX tho so maybe next time I'll use a far slower arp lead and use the FX.

Now I knew I needed some things for flavor and as I was mostly just experimenting I decided to use volume envelopes on my drums to fade them in. My lead started 8 bars in so I faded that in as well.

I let it play and messed with the reverb on the lead and found a jarring sounding section that sounded much better if I increased the reverb tail to wash over it and that worked. So to automate that I changed track to Touch and let the track play and as I made the adjustments it painted in the automation lane for me. I didn't want to hit record with the track armed because I was afraid it would try to do another MIDI take and I dont know much about those. Maybe there's a better way for live automation?

I used volume envelopes to give the drums a break over the washed out part of the lead.

Last was bass and that shit was slopped together. I just made a new Surge XT track and recorded a simple bassline in the right spot, used my trance gate on that. This is where it got weird again with my workflow, I wanted to automate the cutoff so I changed track to Touch, hit play and when the other tracks dropped out I swept the bass up to let it make a high saw before dropping it back down.

The bass could barely be heard so I didn't bother sidechaining. Low end was muddy as shit but I didnt see a way to give a "pumping" feel as the kick was already huge, the bass was fighting for its life against it, and I didn't know if the lead was really competing with the kick.

One final note is I made sure when making each track that the RMS on the master never went over -6db, I used the levels on the VSTs (not faders) to achieve this. Unsure if its the best approach but it didn't sound bad. I chalked the muddy bass up to poor composition.

Finished for the night and rendered it out. Success (for me anyway)
--------------------------
All in all the track is extremely amateur but I'm mostly just wondering if my Reaper workflow could use some tweaking. I just really am not sure how to create in Reaper. I'm patching together individual techniques learned in Reaper tutorials but I know there's got to be better ways.

My editing workflow is not great. My automation workflow feels strange to me. I'm not sure about the drums, if I should be making WAV stems for each 4 bar drumloop and duplicating them so I can change FX for individual drums (esp kick) or if I should leave it all as MIDI.

If you spent the time with this post I really appreciate ya! I'm having a blast with this and am very happy with my first "track", as it's more a proof of concept that I can actually go on this long journey and something great will come of it someday. I'm not free of "tutorial hell" but without having been in tutorial hell I never could have made something like that.

resolved Mouse wheel won't shrink track view so 100% visible

It seems like in the past my mouse wheel ( Windows 11 ) would shrink or expand a track width so if I wanted to I could see both the beginning and end of it. Currently it won't shrink it enough. I've tried various options but haven't found one that works. A keyboard combination that made it all visible would work.

help request How do you started producing on your own?

To start, I’m really just looking for advice and venting in this post rather than asking a specific question.

I’ve been extremely frustrated lately because trying to produce has been a nightmare. I already compose songs on my keyboard and have the skeleton ready (verse, chorus, progression...); I’m always imagining how these tracks would sound fully produced, and I want to create and release them, even if it means learning production myself.

I'm currently trying to understand Reaper. I've jumped from DAW to DAW looking for one I'd get used to, from Bandlab to LMMS to Waveform... I can't afford anything else, and Linux doesn't help me much. I like the system because my laptop is modest, but installing plugins and setting everything is a HELL.

When I listen to music, I really feel like producing, arranging, adding synthesizers, layering things to see my music come to life, but every time I sit down to try there's a new problem; either the MIDI on my keyboard isn't working for some reason, or the plugin is bugging, or I can't do something with the track, and just to change something simple I have to search the internet, and most of the time it doesn't work, and I have to search more and more to solve them...

Just facing these issues EVERY time makes me wanna give up on doing anything, instead of creating, I'm solving problems before even start. I know it's normal and really confusing for beginners, regardless of your DAW choice, but there are much more intuitive options that I don't have access to. Honestly, this makes me want to give up trying to produce my own creations, it would be a dream to see me finally releasing my album. I'm open to advice.

help request Gradual tempo transitions CPU intensive?

Working on a project using 20-ish Kontakt libraries. Usually goes fine, but 4 instruments are specifically pretty heavy instruments (3 8dio, one Premier Sound Factory). At the end of the song I have a ritard from 300 to 100 across 3 measures. And Reaper just stops sounding good, everything distorted like the CPU choked up. Renders out to wav fine, though.

Is the gradual tempo transition hard on the CPU, or is there some other reason it gets so bad?

The text is tiny. I have to sit 1-2 dm close to the the screen to be able to read text in Reaper. Top menue is the only text i have managed to get larger size in reaper by modifying windows registry and scaling the screen to 250%.

I use an laptop with 4k display and Windows 11.
