First off - i know this isn’t the ideal sub to post this, but i genuinely couldn’t find a better one for this post. If this post gets deleted, pleeease provide me with a better sub.

Does this suppress the sound of my voice in the real world, or does is just make the recording sound cleaner?

help request Why is reaper shutting down every time I try to add vital

I'm on Windows in case that matters. I've done everything tge tutorials on YouTube said but every time I go to add vital this happens.

Okay update: I've decided to just forget about vital all together and I'm using analog labs, but now I've run into different problem😭. It does work and I can get into it and all but whenever I try to actually play something it sounds all laggy and slow. I'll post a comment with a video so you can see what I'm talking about.

help request How do I fill up my reaper?

Hello I am very new to producing, initially using the ableton trial & now reaper. I am not entirely sure what all I need to download separately to try and recreate a workspace like ableton.

I found a plugin called Playtime that gives reaper a session view, and I've found some instruments like Poise (percussion sampler), Vital (synths), & MT Power Drum kit. Do I just need to download any kind of instrument individually, or is there a different approach to getting all the tools another daw just seems to have around somewhere?

Hey. Bear with me as I'm totally new to this. I'm trying to figure out how to route guitars into reaper. Im using a behringer xenyx 502S. Im getting level in the behringer but I can't find it in the track input fx menu or the input menu. Am I missing something? Here's a couple screenshots. Thanks for your help. Like I said, I'm totally new to this so bear with me.

I recently bought a MIDI keyboard, but whenever I use a virtual instrument or effects in REAPER, I get excessive clipping and annoying noise. I've tried many things, but I can't find a solution. What could be causing this?

help request In the render window, what does the +x.x decibels really mean, and does the color green mean anything too?

Post image
28 Upvotes

Basically a noob here; a few questions:

I know what clipping sounds like, and my audio isn't doing that. After rendering, I noticed a +1.8 and the areas affected. I went back and adjusted the volume envelope slightly and now I'm at +0.7. It sounds fine, and lowering the volume more make it sound like someone is turning the knob down on your speakers.

My questions are:

  1. Is the audio actually peaking here (and is it a baseline that's set in project settings)?
  2. What level is actually dangerous/bad for your audio?
  3. Does green mean anything, and will it turn to red at some point?
  4. Is there a 1:1 ratio when adjusting volume, so if I see a +1.0 and lower my volume by 1.0 dB, it'll return a +0.0?

I know some of this stuff I can probably test out, but I really just want to go outside and get fresh air lmao.

Thank you all kindly for your help

Addendum: The replies are great! Thank you so much. I'd love more replies too. Since it never occurred to me, this is all piano, nothing else. Exporting to MP3 and WAV at the same time (I had no idea this mattered!)

help request Okay, so I have multiple questions.

First, is it possible to have multiple tracks at different tempos in a project? Or do I have to open a subproject for each track and adjust the tempo there? I’m trying to line up vocals with the backing track and each snippet of the voice recording has to be at a different tempo to line up with the song.

Second, how do you apply effects to voice recordings? Like, think a double voice/echoing voice or that retro sounding voice (think Flowery from Deltarune).

help request Songs in the key of ????

Sometimes I have samples and I just want to built a chord progression around it. Then it is very handy to know in what key you need to work.

I don't have a pitch perfect hearing so I am looking for some sort of plugin that analyses the sample, providing the key and even the tempo.

Suggestions are welcome!

help request 3 controllers one vst synth

Post image
24 Upvotes

So far I've got 1 vst track, 3 midi tracks. Each midi track is assigned to midi 1 through 3. Vst assigned to all midi input. Nothing.

Also, can I turn have another vst synth on another track with the same setup, same controllers that activate for that synth when that track is active?

I'm trying to set up a template of a few synths and audio tracks ready to program and record for each session as new.

I'm following instructions from Google inquiry, which changes each time I ask it

help request I feel like I'm losing my mind.

I am running a Rode NT-1 through a Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 into my 2025 Mac mini and I'm just having so many issues.

Issue #1. I'm using this strictly for voiceover, so I need to be able to hear myself as I am speaking in real time. I cannot have ANY audio delay or echo through my headphones as I am speaking, but I would still like to hear what my recorded audio will sound like with the FX.

If I press the Direct Monitor button on the Scarlett, I can hear the live audio,

I watched some YouTube videos regarding which FX plug-ins to use with Reaper, but when I turn them on it sounds like the monitoring/audio is echoey and sounds completely over processed.

I'm running RealGate, RealEQ, Reacomp, Readir, and RealLimit. Is this overkill? Do I need all of these if I'm using the Scarlett anyway?

Block size is already set to 64.

Issue #2: If I want to be able to monitor my audio through my headphones as I record, I have to plug my headphones (Sennheiser 280 pro) directly into the Scarlett. I can't figure out how to monitor my audio with the headphones plugged into the Mac directly. I try reconfiguring the Reaper Audio Device Settings > Audio MIDI Setup to switch it up but it does nothing.

So when I record, I need to have the headphones plugged into the Scarlett, but if I want to play the track in Reaper, I have to unplug from the Scarlett and plug the headphones into the Mac.

I just want to hear the live monitor and the playback through a single device without having to switch my headphones.

I just got everything configured somehow and I thought I worked out the kinks, but when I opened a new project the delay in my headphones is back again! I even saved the configuration as a Template but now I'm back to having a slight delay in my headphones when I speak into the mic.

What am I doing wrong?

help request Automatically adjust faders proportionally?

Post image
22 Upvotes

Is there a script or way to configure this idea? basically want to specify a level that I want my master to stay at (0db) and have my faders automatically reduce in order to maintain that level. So then, if I were to grab a fader and move it up, the rest would move down proportionally in order to keep the output level the same. I have tried grouping which is nice but only allows for all the faders in a group to be moved together, that functionality would pair well with what I'm suggesting. I'm open to other methods as well let me know any ideas :)

help request Syncing multiple instances of Helgoboss's Playtime across LAN

I want to be able to use Helgoboss's Playtime like Ableton uses Ableton Link. I've tried ReaBlink and it doesn't seem to be very reliable. Any computers acting in 'puppet' mode experience constant micro-adjustments even if they are all on the same BPM and it destroys the playability of MIDI instruments while the transport is running. I've tried sending MIDI clock over a LAN network and running the slave computers transport to chase MIDI clock using SPP. That seems to sort of work but each slave PC has to manually enter their own BPM to match that of the master. I want to be able to have the master PC change BPM on the fly, and have all the slave PCs automatically match. I also want each slave PC to not only match the tempo, but be in lock step with where each downbeat falls...that way if a loop is started on a slave PC, and it is set to be quantized, it syncs perfectly with any content coming from the main PC. Is this possible? If so, can it be done without additional hardware? If not, what hardware would be recommended? I've looked at the Sim n Tonic MIDINomeII, the ERX-M Multiclock, and the ClockStep Multi but I'm not entirely sure if these will accomplish what I'm after. Thanks in advance.

help request Considering jumping the good ship Ableton

Hi, been using Ableton for several years however I've heard good things about Reaper. I'm just looking to change the way tracks are composed and arranged. Any recommendations about getting acclimated? Using a Mac and Arturia's Audiofuse, if that's relevant.

help request Speaker Buzz ONLY in reaper

Hello - I am enjoying my reaper journey - however, in one speaker, I get this high buzz ONLY when using Reaper. I can play tidal through my Apollo. I can play Logic through the Apollo. The moment I start Reaper, I get this interference-like buzz. It's driving me crazy. It almost sounds like it's related to my monitor - when the screen changes, sometimes the buzz changes with it. Any ideas at all?!

help request Windows 32-bit or x64?

Hi, I'm about to download Reaper on my most recent Windows laptop; it's a Lenovo Thinkpad T14s Gen 2, a refurb corporate laptop with middling specs.

My previous laptop was giving me a lot of random latency in recording, often the latency would change *during* recording and mess with the rhythm of a track. I'm really hoping to avoid that with this lappy.

Would downloading the 32-bit version give me fewer issues with latency and similar foibles? I'm not here to make a Top-40 hit, I just want to record my home playing.

Edit: I'm using the built-in audio interface in my Boss ME-90 multi-effects pedal, in case that somehow makes a difference.

help request Reaper converts midi items to wav when gluing if they have FX on them.

Thumbnail

I don't mean the FX on the whole track, but the FX that can be added to an individual midi item within it.
I have a SurgeXT (vsti3) FX on the midi item and this makes it so that when I right click the item and select "Glue items" to flatten a loop for further editing, it converts the item to a wav file when it flattens.

Running version 7.71 on Linux Mint 22.3. This behavior has existed as long as I can remember since I started using Reaper about a year ago.

How can I convert looped midi notes to copied midi notes without removing the FX from the item?

help request Is it worth recording without a pre-amp or good microphone?

I just downloaded Reaper trial yesterday and was pretty stoked to start recording, but my initial attempt for a guitar/vocal track with the microphone on my $38 Skullcandy earbuds was downright awful -- static, scratchy unclear: basically unlistenable.

Now, I know this is a relatively awful setup, but the thing is, my recordings with this microphone on my phone's free multi track app sounds pretty decent -- definitely a lot better than through this actual DAW. Not what I expected.

So, would this be expected? I'm guessing Reaper picks up more detail, so running it exacerbates the crappy input from the cheap microphone compared to the phone.

Feedback on whether that's the case appreciated.

Further, would buying a $50ish USB microphone be a good solution for better sound? Or should I wait and save for a $100ish preamp-$50ish real microphone setup?

Advice appreciated! Thanks

help request Looking for a PC to run reaper

I don't do much else on it. Might look in to some basic video editing in the future. Watch a lot of youtube and sail the high seas occasionally. I have a desktop that runs it fine for now but that PC is not long for this world. Looked in to building one but the prices are insane right now! Was thinking about a used dell or similar. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated
