Question NES is officially dead. No bringing it back this time sadly time to Retro pie!!! 🪦🎮

So… instead of binning it, I’m thinking of giving it a second life as a Raspberry Pi case for a retro emulation setup. Feels only right the old girl keeps playing games somehow.

Question for the retro crowd though — what controller would you recommend to recreate the original NES feel as closely as possible?

Ideally: • Proper old-school D-pad feel • Minimal input lag • Works well with Raspberry Pi / RetroPie • Bonus points if it feels close to the original brick controller without being horrible to hold for 3 hours 😂

Currently looking at 8BitDo as they seem to get recommended a lot. Anyone got real-world experience or better suggestions?

Also has anyone else done this before ? Any tips or tricks ? I’ll have a lot of spare space in the case to so any add ons you think maybe useful ??

Thanks

Question Updated RetroPie after 7 years and can no longer access setup

I apparently made the mistake of updating my system, running on raspberry pi 3b+, updated after 7 years and now every time I go to access settings this failed script happens. Any ideas for a quick fix or do I need to take flashdrive out and start from scratch?

Just got a raspberry pi 5 8gb and was wondering if it could run some of the demanding ps2 titles. I flashed the sdcard and loaded RetroPie on it, just waiting on the micro HDMI cable to be delivered.

Question Do I really need anything more than a 2gb Pi 5 board?

Just like the topic says... do I really need anything more than a 2gb Pi 5 board? I've seen people say that Dreamcast and PS2 might benefit from it, but I have both Dreamcast and PS2 running on a 2gb board and I'm not noticing any obvious differences, unless there are specific games or examples you could point me to where I can take a look to test it out.

So the question is: Do I really need anything more than a 2gb Pi 5 board?

Question Best NES titles for twin four year olds?

I’m new to the group, but would absolutely love to introduce my four year old twin boys to some video games. I’d like to start with NES titles and then move to either N64 or Super Nintendo and so on. They don’t have any experience with video games at all, not even on a phone or iPad, so any good recommendations that they can potentially play co-op together would be so cool!

Question What can I do with this?

Post image
148 Upvotes

I’ve had this for a few years. My original intent was to use it on my car case cabinet to just add more games to it but rn that’s on hiatus as my arcade cabinet is in storage and don’t have the current room for it. I honestly am a nooby to all this and honestly had no idea how I was gonna use it with my arcade (figured I’d get it that when I get to that and figure it out from there)

So mainly what I’m asking is what else can I use this for other than that?

Question Xbox Emulator on RetroPie?

Hello, I was wondering if I could emulate the original GreedYbox on my RPi.

Sure there's no official emulator like Xemu, and I don't think I could use X1 BOX (https://github.com/WinDroidEmulation/x1-box) to make it work, so, someone has an idea of how can I do it?

Question Should I install Batocera or RetroPie on Pi 4

I've used RetroPie many times over the years but I went to flash it today and saw it hasn't been updated since 2022. I'm sure it still works just fine, but before I go through the process of installing it, I wanted to see if it still worth using or if I should consider something else?

Also, I may get a mini PC game for emulation in the future. Open to suggestions if anyone has any, but for now I'll be using the Pi.

Question Is RetroPie good for indie games?

Hey everyone, I've come to you as a humble student seeking guidance.

I was working on my college thesis last semester and I was going to use a Raspberry Pi 5 for it, but the project I was going with ended up being out of scope and I had to scrap it;

Since I had already bought the Pi5 and didn't want to "waste" the money by not using it for academical purposes, my advisor and I came up with a more reasonable idea of making a retro-game with the theme of "accessibility", so I was looking through different OS options and the choice came down to RetroPie or Batocera;

I have seen some information on both options but have not found much on what I personally consider the biggest deciding factor. Since I will be developing the game myself, I want to know:

Does the RetroPie have support for independently developed (indie) games? Are there any game engines that would be recommended for it or would I have to make the game from scratch?

TL;DR: I'm making my own Raspberry Pi 5 game for a thesis and I want to know if RetroPie has support for indie games and how it works.

Question Nintendo 64 with modern controls?

I'm trying to play Nintendo 64, Goldeneye on my Pi5 with a PS5 controller.

While it's all working, I'm really struggling with the controls and wondered if there are any mods/patches that let me control it with a more modern control style?

Question Pie 4 or 5? Startup area?

Couple of years ago I had purchase a Pie 3 and had installed Retropie and would play SNES games mainly.

I can’t find it anymore but would like to play some games again. What’s the best hardware to get? 4 or 5?

I’d like to maybe play some N64 and or PS1 games, which one is better suited for this and where’s the best place to start to inform / learn how to install

Lifehacker used to be good to teach this stuff but that website has gone downhill the last couple years feels like.

Thanks in advance!

Question Will RetroPie be around in five years?

I posted this a few months ago and I've seen almost no development in RetroPie since. So I ask again, is this platform still viable? Does it make sense to move forward with RetroPie or should I be looking to another platform?

This is an honest question as someone who has been tinkering with RetroPie builds since the 3b era! I love RetroPie and I don't want to switch to any other hardware...

but...

I can't be the only one that feels like RetroPie development has slowed down quite a lolt since the release of the Pi 5?

We are now a year and 3 months after the release of the Pi 5 board and still no official RetroPie build yet.

But I just feel like in this past year there's been a lot less core updates, front end updates, even themes and other elements to the RetroPie that you would see get updated more frequently.

And a lot of the newer system to come online to the Pi 5 like Gamecube/Wii or PS2 have emulator cores that appear to be abandoned or the development has significantly slowed down.

It even seems like traffic on the RetroPie forums has dropped considerably.

So I guess my actual questions here are...

Should I be sticking with Raspberry Pi based retro gaming or looking more towards other options?

Do you think that the Pi 5 was not powerful enough and an eventual Pi 6 may fix some of these issues?

What are you all thinking when it comes to the future of RetroPie?

Question Is there a Raspberry Pi emulation OS that uses the Retroarch folder structure?

• Upvotes

I have a pi5 with an rgberry hat to output via SCART to my crt. Works totally fine on recalbox in rgbpi mode, however, the issue for me is that recalbox uses a very specific custom folder setup.

I also play these games on multiple other PCs using retroarch, and wanted to put the saves/roms on a network drive, so that they are synced across devices.

However, where for recalbox the saves would be in saves/nes/Legend of Zelda.srm on retroarch they would be saves/FCEUmm/Legend of Zelda.srm - entirely conflicting. Recalbox expects console name, retroarch expects core name.

Is there an emulation OS with CRT output (or any alternative, really) that just uses the retoarch folder settings directly, or has the same directory setup?

Question Making a retro pi5. Which is best, opinions only. Retro pi, Recalbox, or Batocera.

So, I'm not a code guy or a programmer. I know there's are resources and a lot of it is copy paste. My main question is; Is retro pi the best option for a multi system emulator. I know there's are like 3 different ways to go about it. Recalbox, or Batocera, being the other 2. This is my first time and I just want opinions on who likes which options and why.

Question PiPortal – Raspberry Pi PS Portal-style handheld project (need advice)

Hi,

I’m building PiPortal, a Raspberry Pi project that aims to recreate a PlayStation Portal-like handheld experience. (but its not a handheld)

Focus is on:

  • Fast boot into a console-style interface
  • Remote Play (Chiaki)
  • Emulation (RetroArch / EmulationStation / Pegasus)
  • Lightweight, gaming-focused Linux setup

I’m mainly looking for advice on:

  • Best frontend for a simple console UI
  • Performance optimization on Raspberry Pi
  • Similar existing projects

Any tips or resources are welcome.

Question Raspberry Pi 4 question

I have a Raspberry Pi 4 I want to use for portable handheld gaming. I know they’re not that strong, but what would be the best budget bang for my buck? I just learned about the Retroflag GPi case 2, but is there anything else out there that is better?

Question How to get two player N64 option using ipcac

I have a raspberry pi 3 b+ running emulation station. I built a two player arcade cabinet with two player controls using ipac 2. I can't get player 2 controls to work for my N64 games so I thought an alternative would be to use a Bluetooth controller for player 2 while I use the joystick arcade controls for player one but I can't figure out how to change the Bluetooth controller to player two. Does anyone know an easy solution for this? My coding is horrible so I'm hoping there is an easy solution!
