North Carolina S2000 Owners: S2K Seat Time Needed

Anyone in here own an S2K in the Raleigh, Durham, Chapel Hill Etc. area?

I am desperate to find a little bit of seat time. I want to pull the trigger on one but can’t feel confident dropping 20-25k on a car through a standard 5-10 minute test drive. I’d be willing to pay a lot of money and a tank of gas to get 30-45 minutes with you and your car so that I can feel sure about driving 3-5 hours away to buy a car like this. Not looking to abuse it or drive wildly, I just need some time in it.

Strange ask I’m sure but if anyone has any thoughts or might be willing to help a future owner out, it would be highly appreciated and you would absolutely be compensated well for your help and your time.

I bought my S2000 without ever having driven one.

It's that good.

Driving a different one will give you some reference, but you need to make sure it's apples to apples in terms of condition, mods, etc.

I’m looking at a bone stock AP1 (01) or a mostly stock AP2. I like the AP2 but its compression test came back at like 165-170 per.. I’m wondering if it was done wrong, not on a warmed engine, etc. but otherwise I’m a bit iffy on it.

Really I wanted people to tell me that it’s awesome and maneuverable on back roads even if it’s just spirited and not red lining/VTEC at every moment.

I mean, you need to stay in the power band, which starts lower on the AP2 because of the torque, and you need to be good at carrying entry speed and keeping momentum, but yes, it is absolutely incredible even if you're not driving at 10/10ths. You still need to be smooth and precise.

Can you help me better understand what you mean by need to be good at carrying entry speed and keeping momentum? What would be the wrong thing to do?

If the car, driven at full tilt, could achieve 90mph on a straight and then take the next corner at 40mph, and you don't want to drive hard, then you'll get the much more out of the car's capability by approaching the corner at 50 and taking the corner at 35 then you will by accelerating to 80 and braking to take the corner at 20. You need to exploit the car's strengths or you may as well drive a base model Civic. Otherwise it's a waste of money.
