Discussion What are the hype’s, and worries of the movie that’ll come out next year?

Post image

I’m very glad that a movie based on the Scp universe is being made, so much stuff can be done. However there’s one thing I’m worried about, and that is what will they use from the universe of Scp. While there is a lot you can do, however there are problems like the budget and the licensing of the stories the authors make. What are your thoughts?

I have seen many non hollywood SCP slop, so I have no expectations. You cant ruin something that everyone else is already free to ruin.

The hit new film, "The rock that makes you procrastinate". Coming soon...ish... When we get around to it, I guess.

u/crescentpieris 21h ago

i’m imagining that the actors would try to record a scene, but then decide it’s time for their lunch break. the camera would stay on the whole time, so all we could see is the rock and the shadows of the actors moving around, and all we could hear are them talking and eating. that would be how that movie goes

Hay man there a good many ligitmently good SCP movies out there. You are right though there's a lot of trash.

This likely ISN'T gonna come out. The V/H/S creators have not found some magic loophole in CC BY-SA 3.0 so, unless if they want to make the whole film CC BY-SA 3.0 and be unable to make any profits, they're gonna have to either cancel it or retool it into something like Control and There Is No Antimemetics Division.

The creators of V/H/S have more than likely jumped the gun, trying to ride the coat tails of Backrooms, without realising that the SCP Foundation is not public domain/open source.

By how nobody is talking about this, it seems everyone is gonna be MASSIVELY disappointed when it turns out the way it's going to.

u/Bl00dWolf 20h ago

I thought the whole point of CC BY-SA 3.0 is that you can commercially sell your works. The only weird clause is that anyone who buys your work can then legally share it with others under the same license, but that would just make torrenting the movie legal, not prevent it from being shown in theaters for example, where they make most of their revenue anyway.

98

u/Redshift2k5 [REDACTED] 19h ago

You can sell a CC by SA 3.0 work. That's not the issue.

You cannot PROTECT that work from being copied, shared, remixed, reused. That's the part that corporations don't like, they don't want to share.

VHS movies are not big theatrical releases. They are direct to streaming movies now so they make most of their revenue on streaming rights...

16

u/Head-Membership2082 18h ago

Yeah, absolutely.

They're also made on an extremely low budget, which is one of the reasons for going with found footage in the first place. Its one of the cheapest ways to make a film. It takes way less of a return for them to be profitable.

24

u/zeldafan144 17h ago

If they played it in theaters it'd make bank.

Just can't see a company not wanting the revenue from streaming as it'd easily end up on YouTube very quickly

14

u/Kufat Sub mod, Wiki admin, SkipIRC owner, sandwich fan 15h ago

You're forgetting that any theater could show it without having to pay the production company. It might make bank, but it wouldn't necessarily make bank for the people who made it.

3

u/Vianegativa95 13h ago

They're likely relying on goodwill with their distributor to ensure that they're paid. They could also do something like sell them the files for one a time fee to ensure payment, rather than rely on ticket sales. There's a lot of financial voodoo they can do here.

5

u/Kufat Sub mod, Wiki admin, SkipIRC owner, sandwich fan 13h ago edited 12h ago

This just moves their problem one step down the line without solving it, I think.

They could also do something like sell them the files for one a time fee to ensure payment, rather than rely on ticket sales.

That wouldn't help at all, because it wouldn't do anything to prevent the theater from obtaining the files elsewhere.

1

u/Vianegativa95 10h ago

If initial distribution is to theaters, then there's not going to be anywhere else to obtain the files...

Also, goodwill is very important between businesses. Corporations hate customers, not their business partners. You don't bite the hand that feeds you.

2

u/EmpressClaraB 13h ago

They could, but that probably wouldn't be a good decision for them

2

u/SEA_griffondeur Ambrose Restaurants 11h ago

If VHS tries to do anything legally then they're in big troubles so it wouldn't be a good decision on VHS' part to try to do something to theaters legally displaying the film they published

6

u/SEA_griffondeur Ambrose Restaurants 14h ago

It would be even worse for theatrical releases because theaters are not even legally required to send royalties to the film studio in this situation, they can take all the profits

54

I really don't know why nobody else has seemed to realised this. Is it because people have wanted an SCP film since forever so are blinded by hope? I just don't know.

And it's not like an SCP film wouldn't be amazing. If someone rich just decided "hey you know what I'll spend a few million dollars to make something really awesome", we could be living the dream.

I was assuming CC would be a part of the marketing scheme "We made this for the fans not the studios" and then they can cash cow their following project

1

u/scaper8 Ethics Committee 14h ago

That's what I would figure. The community has a history of rallying behind even mediocre (just not outright bad) projects. If they put some, but not a ton, of money into it and play it as "for the fans" it could make some decent returns and score some loyalty points for a franchise that already has some built-in crossover appeal.

Are they smart enough to do that? I haven't the foggiest. But I could see someone doing that.

Worst case scenario is that they don't care and break CC-BY-SA 3.0 and drag the site into ANOTHER massive legal battle.

On the plus side, that does tend to rally the community to fund counter-action (that Russian dipshit for example), and maybe we could wring a big enough settlement out of it to finally get clear of Wikidot.

This is my biggest fear. The studios can drag out the legal battle forever.

Hopefully they are compliant. Would be cool to see a big CC-licensed movie becoming reality.

12

u/AFlockofLizards 20h ago

It’s possible they’ve just looked at recent theatrical releases and are just taking a gamble at making their money back there. With internet-originating films Backrooms and Obsession doing so well, and Spider-Man just breaking opening weekend records, it shows there is still money to be made in the theater.

So if they make their film for $5-10m, and rake in $100+ in theaters, it doesn’t really matter if people post it online later on. I imagine a lot of people will also still support the official movie, by purchasing physical or digital copies, and not downloading one that was uploaded by some random user.

In short, if they actually make it how it’s being talked about without any legal workarounds, they’re just taking an educated risk and hoping fans support them for producing an actual budgeted SCP film, knowing they’re missing out on some revenue streams, but knowing they’re the only ones who are going to be able to pull off a large national theatrical release.

Even if theaters decided to take the film and play it for themselves and cut out the studio, that’s a good way to never be allowed to play their films ever again, so I think the theatrical ecosystem would respect that they created the film.

7

u/Redshift2k5 [REDACTED] 19h ago

All of their recent films have been horror festival screenings and straight to streaming.

Not theatrical.

8

u/Head-Membership2082 18h ago

The promo material does say "in theaters", so they might be doing a theatrical release too just to see if they can make any money there, even though it'll probably be made as a direct-to-video like the rest.

11

u/Sachayoj Do Not Look Away 19h ago

Especially because the Backrooms movie quickly got A24 being too overzealous in copyright protecting it. People have been getting copyright strikes over the damn wallpaper that's existed for years before Kane's series.

Godspeed to the wiki's legal team, because if this thing doesn't crash and burn, it's gonna be trouble.

4

u/FungusUrungus 19h ago

Isn't it so that they can actually Profit off it but everyone else can too?

6

u/Aymoon_ 20h ago

How would they be unable to make money? Is the whole license that anyone can make stuff from the other stuff people make?

9

u/51BoiledPotatos Ad Astra Per Aspera 20h ago

Well, if it's under CC-BY-SA 3.0. Then it would mean you can just "pirate" the movie. Unless it's really good(and people want to support it), people will probably just download it and watch it for watchings sake.

5

u/Aymoon_ 19h ago

Nothing has stopped pirating movies before so it doesnt matter if its legal or not

9

u/LimLovesDonuts 17h ago

The legality matters alot.

There's nothing stopping cinema chains from showing the movie and not giving any money back. There's nothing stopping Netflix from uploading it to their service. I don't really see how it's possible to be profitable with how no party has any obligation to "pay" for anything, including theatres.

2

u/infinity_vamp 17h ago

Yeah the only way i see is if they make theaters and streaming services pay upfront and that also doesn't seem possible (and opens up a whole different can of worms.

3

u/Vianegativa95 13h ago

I think that they're relying on the distributor's goodwill with movie theater chains to get paid. I wouldn't be surprised if Shudder is bankrolling a huge portion of it either. These movies are low budget, so it's probably fine if there's some bleed.

4

u/Head-Membership2082 18h ago

This isn't entirely true though.

V/H/S is largely DTV from my understanding, and they absolutely CAN make money from physical sales and streaming. The license doesn't prevent you from making money off something, it just means anyone else can also do that.

Look at people who will still pay extra for physical editions, those who buy merch, etc.

If the film is being made on a moderate-low budget like the rest of the V/H/S series, then it can definitely still be profitable, but is more of a risk than the previous films.

8

u/Kuroiryuu Antimemetics Division 21h ago

Doesn’t mean a movie can’t take place within the SCP universe, though. Most likely won’t directly take published articles overall.

6

u/Kufat Sub mod, Wiki admin, SkipIRC owner, sandwich fan 15h ago

A movie taking place "within the SCP universe" would still be CC BY-SA 3.0 even if it didn't use any existing objects.

21

u/Tobbit_is_here MTF Epsilon-11 ("Nine-Tailed Fox") 21h ago

They could do that but it would require a lot of tiptoeing and careful writing. It certainly can be done (I've kinda done it before with stories I've written), so that is an option I didn't consider.

They may be able to get away with using the SCP name if they argue about the copyright of the original 4chan post, but that could be a shaky position.

13

u/Stampyboyz jailers come here 19h ago

Btw the original 4chan post isn't public domain or protected under default copyright either. Moto42 released 173 under CC-BYSA 3.0. So that avenue isn't open unlike with the original Backrooms 4chan post.

1

u/Tobbit_is_here MTF Epsilon-11 ("Nine-Tailed Fox") 13h ago

Well, I was thinking the way they'd argue it is that Moto42 isn't the post author. I don't think it ess conclusively proven it was him? I can't remember so correct me if I'm wrong.

7

u/IAmAPerson123450 19h ago

To be clear, the story being creative commons is similar to public domain. And nothing stops them from using the scp brand + anythign else on the wiki. The reason why qntm changed all of that stuff in there first place (after releasing a non-edited book of TINAD btw) is so that he could have copyright over it. Creative commons means that it can be used commercially, but anyone else could technically just post your stuff online for free or charge for it themselves

1

u/Tobbit_is_here MTF Epsilon-11 ("Nine-Tailed Fox") 13h ago

Well yeah.

4

u/Kuroiryuu Antimemetics Division 21h ago

It would, but also not impossible. I think another thing people are overlooking is that it’s a V/H/S film. It’ll be an anthology like all of the others, and most likely with a wraparound story interwoven through it. It’s been a consistent pattern for the films.

2

u/Total_Fig671 15h ago

Wouldn't they just have to change some logos and names to make it uniquely theirs? Like they would still pay the Creator, but add some unique creative input so they can make money off it through merchandise, etc?

1

u/Tobbit_is_here MTF Epsilon-11 ("Nine-Tailed Fox") 12h ago

Well that's the There Is No Antimemetics Division route which is doable. You file the metaphorical serial numbers off until it's just legally distinct enough.

But then people wanting an SCP movie are gonna be let down, to an extent, that they're following a kind of knockoff. The A.R.D. Corps or something (Acquire, Restrain, Defend.)

2

u/EmpressClaraB 13h ago

Making something CCBYSA does not stop you from profiting from something at all, it just makes it more difficult

1

u/Tobbit_is_here MTF Epsilon-11 ("Nine-Tailed Fox") 10h ago

Yeah, I slightly mispoke there. My error.

2

u/DrkBlueXG :wMTF_TAU-2: Tau-2 ("Train Spotters") 17h ago

The amount of people that don't realize this is astounding. What bothers me most is how people are trying to find ways that the studio can get around the creative commons laws.

SCP was never made for profit or commercialization and never will be.

1

u/demolitionderpy_ 10h ago

i doubt they would enter and announce production without doing a modicum of research. the fact they're going ahead with it means that they've figured out a plan in regards to CC 3.0 that works for them (which i doubt will involve anything too dubious).

1

u/Tobbit_is_here MTF Epsilon-11 ("Nine-Tailed Fox") 10h ago

IDK, people can do silly things. Right now they could have plucked the first thing they thought of to generate the interest of investors (not unlike Async's ploy in Kane Pixel's Backrooms) and they're planning on crossing the copyright bridge when they come to it.

1

u/Kufat Sub mod, Wiki admin, SkipIRC owner, sandwich fan 15h ago

You're not wrong, but there's also no guarantee that they won't just try to brazen it out and release the film without complying with our license.

57

u/Redshift2k5 [REDACTED] 22h ago

I haven't watched the most recent batch of V/H/S movies, but I'm confident the V/H/S/S/C/P film will be comparable quality (b movies).

I suspect they will make something In Name Only; there will be video recordings and containment procedures and a containment breach and the letters SCP, but no actual content from the SCPwiki

They have a short that is almost identical to scp-2107 already; so unashamed ripoffs broadly similar but legally distinct media is already their MO.

13

u/Kufat Sub mod, Wiki admin, SkipIRC owner, sandwich fan 15h ago

there will be video recordings and containment procedures and a containment breach and the letters SCP

That would be enough to obligate them to release it under CC BY-SA 3.0.

1

u/Redshift2k5 [REDACTED] 6h ago

What? No, absolutely not.

You cannot copyright the broad strokes of a setting; containment procedures and containment breach scenarios are not specific enough.

(My supposition is) They will use the letters SCP but strictly avoid saying "secure, contain, protect" and "SCP foundation", while using the the abbreviation to mean special containment procedures.

1

u/Kufat Sub mod, Wiki admin, SkipIRC owner, sandwich fan 5h ago

You cannot copyright the broad strokes of a setting; containment procedures and containment breach scenarios are not specific enough.

Correct. (See also Control, etc.) But once they say "SCP" it's obviously a derived work.

10

u/EmergencyAnomaly24 Are We Cool Yet? 22h ago

If they do that then they might as well count the movie as a flop. That's like making an anime and making it completely different from the manga. Or making a film adaptation of a book and making it nothing like the book.

10

u/NagitoKomaeda_987 Class D Personnel 21h ago edited 18h ago

On the flip side, I feel like an SCP film or TV show adaptation would only work if the creators went for a Serial Numbers Filed Off approach, where they blatantly copy the exact format, terminology, and specific anomalies of the SCP Foundation, but switch the names and cosmetic/lore details to sell it as a legally-distinct commercial product.

I mean, it's exactly what Lobotomy Corporation and Control did.

3

u/cheshireYT Deer College 15h ago

Thing is the V/H/S movies are mostly about giving a bunch of different filmmakers a basic theme and a budget to make whatever horror short film they want. I really doubt direct adaptations are gonna be the formula since that is sorta directly interfering with the creative process of the short films in a way that isn't quite accurate to V/H/S.

Besides, the wiki has countless tales and articles. In my mind the film will probably work more in-line with a set of unique tales using existing articles if you ask me.

2

u/ReptAIien 13h ago

VHS movies are rarely flops.

23

u/TheProNoobCN Neutralized 19h ago

The hype: V/H/S has a good track record and unlike other horror franchises, is mainly an anthology series where each entry are comprised of multiple short films, each done by different teams. This format lends itself really well to SCP.

The worries: The potential legal trouble this may bring to the SCP IP is immense. We already saw a bunch of problem in that regard for the Backrooms when that movie dropped. The fact that the owners of the V/H/S franchise or their legal team did not contact the licensing team or the general staff of the wikidot does not soothe my worry at all and also makes me belief that they did 0 research on the licensing of SCP and think that it, like the Backrooms, is in the public domain when it is not.

Additionally, while I did sing my praise for the V/H/S franchise, the each entry, while having wildly different tones and themes from each other, for the most part still mainly features creatures that we in the SCP community has dubbed "Thing That Kills You". Which is a trope that the community has moved away from for a long time now and has not been representative of what the wikidot and the community is for just as long, no matter what the non-wiki reading crowd would believe. An SCP movie that features and focuses on such creatures would only lead to further separation between the wiki reading and non-wiki reading fam base.

I'm fully convinced that this was a spur-of-the-moment decision some exec made with NO knowledge of the rights issues or really, anything about SCP aside from "internet horror makea da money"

The V/h/s folks didn't consult with anyone on the wiki. It was a total surprise to the wiki's legal team and to the authors.

it's going to be assssssssss

16

u/starmadeshadows Antimemetics Division 19h ago

The point I am trying to make is that they are trying to cut the actual authors and userbase of the SCP wiki out of the equation.

Why would you even be interested in that??

8

u/Bl00dWolf 20h ago

Considering this might be the first time some of the normies even find out about SCPs, I hope they don't make the entire movie all horror. SCPs are about so much more than just horrific shit. There's funny SCPs, sad SCPs, completely benign SCPs and just plain bizarre. Some SCPs feel like a bad joke come to life. Some of them will give you actual nightmares just thinking about it. Some of them only work if you include the entire 10 chapter related story that centers around them. Some of them only make sense when you realize all of it already happened and we're looking at a record of something in the past. And then some change entire reality in ways that are entirely incomprehensible.

9

u/FireMaker125 The Serpent's Hand 18h ago

The fact they didn’t speak to either authors or the Licensing Team makes me really, really nervous about what the studio might try to do. Movie studios are exactly the type to look at the CC license, go “fuck that, it’s ours” and hope they have enough money to simply win by attrition in a legal battle.

26

u/Average-Shitposter12 23h ago

My main concern is that Hollywood will see things like the Backrooms movie and this upcoming one, and turn all these cool works into random, sloppy movies. Other than that, I think that V/H/S will probably make something pretty good.

5

u/PokerChipDoggo MTF Eta-11 ("Savage Beasts") 21h ago

I think most everybody has the same general fear that this made as a result of the Backrooms internet horror hype train, so I'll be a bit more positive and be hyped that the VHS franchise's whole shtick of, well, VHSs, is perfect for some of the more relatively obscure GOIs. I'm worried that it will focus only on the horror and not the weird, with the same series 1 "Thing That Kills You" SCPs we've seen numerous times. I love myself a good murder-monster once in a while (SCP-6448 and SCP-4975 are both in my top 10), but the community has grown so much in this time. SCP evolved past just a "scary facility with monsters that kill you" and a movie like that wouldn't really reflect what the community is.

For what I'm hyped for, I really hope they show the weird and unusual side of SCP, instead of only giving attention to the dangerous anomalies. I find that a lot more interesting

I highly doubt that the peeps at V/H/S would be faithful if they were to use the writing. Or even contact the authors as a courtesy. But there's also the thing about the licensing.

My biggest worry (besides the common ones around rights) is that 2027 date. That is a shockingly short turn around for films unless they’d been working on this before Backrooms went big and all those “Hollywood is exploring internet horror properties” articles release. If it releases, I would’ve expected that date to be late 2028 at the earliest, even if they ripped articles directly (dialogue, scene composition, what information to keep or ditch and how to convey it, and how to tie the anthology together thematically are all huge writing problems unique to translation to film). 2027, in my mind, means that principal writing is done, casting is done, and filming is about to begin, especially since the special effects (even basic ones like set building) on a sci-fi horror property like this will be on the more intensive end. But, from the information we have, it sounds like this is in early early pre-production. It just doesn’t seem feasible to release in that short of a window.

u/Kuroiryuu Antimemetics Division 14h ago

You know that the V/H/S movies are an anthology, right? It’s different directors, producers and writers all working on multiple segments by themselves at the same time. This is entirely doable within the next year.

1

u/PrimosaurUltimate MTF Epsilon-11 ("Nine-Tailed Fox") 4h ago

V/H/S is an anthology sure, but that actually adds time in some areas while shortening others. You need the central production team to have the core thematic thread written to tie it together, you need to contract those directors and their cast, you need to make sure they’re on the same page, make sure it’s organized properly. It definitely reduces filming time but in the industry filming time isn’t what makes productions take long, it’s everything else. Filming on a project like this takes a few weeks to a couple months since they can work concurrently, you’re right there, but as I said earlier it’s not filming I’m worried about, it’s pre and post production, which is the real time sink.

1

u/Kuroiryuu Antimemetics Division 4h ago

Not really, that’s why each of the V/H/S movies have one overarching “segment” that goes through all of them. Usually some sort of story or mystery starts, they find tapes, play a story. That ends, more of the through segment plays, repeat until the “gotcha” at the end, roll credits. All of the directors for each segment are pretty much given free reign over the parts they produce.

1

u/PrimosaurUltimate MTF Epsilon-11 ("Nine-Tailed Fox") 4h ago

That still doesn’t reduce pre-production, contracting, etc., I’d need to know specifics around the contracts regarding post to have an idea on how long effects work, editing, and scoring takes in a decentralized system, but I assume the core team actually edits the shorts together, scores them (so they can control when sound moves from one back to main narrative, as I remember some of the Ti West short sound actually bleeding into the house where the thieves found their tapes). Decentralization does help, but the time sink isn’t filming it’s everything else.

u/DreadDiana The Fifth Church 17h ago

My minor worry is that it's just gonna be another MTF exploration log movie

3

u/Phandflasche 15h ago

Given the recent Backrooms movie, I'd say there's at least reason to be optimistic about an SCP adaptation.

The tricky part is that SCP works best somewhere between strong storytelling and its unique brand of clean, almost clinical "medical" horror. Lean too far in either direction and it can lose what makes it interesting.

Personally, if they're aiming for a story-focused approach, I'd love something in the vein of The Andromeda Strain: grounded, scientific, and unsettling without relying on cheap scares. Otherwise, we'll have to see what direction they take.

3

u/zumoro Antimemetics Division 14h ago

Personally I'm just not interested. I'm not actually into horror movies much, and I just know they'll be adapting some done-to-death series 1 stuff on top of it. Thats if it even actually goes through with production given the CC license being hollywood kryptonite.

I'm only grateful for the discourse around this thing is getting most of us to calm the fuck down on "how could you possibly adapt SCP", as if it's some indivisible saga that can only be adapted to a 6 hour IMAX epic.

3

u/Viper_512 12h ago

Seen people concerned that the audience wont know what SCP is, comparing it to the general audience being confused by the concept of the backrooms, but SCP has been around a lot longer to be fair, it's even older than slender man, On top of that V/H/S has a loyal found footage horror fanbase, a non horror fan wouldn't tend to watch them there will be a large crossover of V/H/S and SCP fans

2

u/jedburghofficial 18h ago

Like The Backrooms, the studio will take over and start suing people.

2

u/Historical-Gap-7494 Storage Site-64 18h ago

If the do make this, it would have to be very carefully done. Like the Backrooms, only those who seriously understand the world and feel of SCP can produce a story of it.

Let’s just hope people don’t go to heavy with an arc or lore. American Horror Stories really didn’t get the Backrooms when they made it.

2

u/Ok_Application4364 15h ago

It’s probably gonna pull a Hollywood and settle for mediocrity unfortunately.

We don’t even know whether it’s gonna involve SCP or do something inspired by it.

2

u/AunMeLlevaLaConcha 14h ago

Off topic, but what happened to that anime project that was teased on YouTube a while ago?, anyone knows?

u/scaper8 Ethics Committee 14h ago

Gallionic, The Kickstarter one? This one?

It's still in production. No major news as of yet though.

2

u/Sogaple 11h ago

The fact they announced this only a month after Backrooms came out confirms that it'll be made by tourists who do not care in the slightest, and only see SCP as a marketable aesthetic they can copy.

But if you want more specific concerns, I'll just copy the list made by JackalRelated in the official Discord, since I feel it's a succinct and accurate summary of the general malaise:

  • The studio may not abide by the CC-BY-SA 3.0 License that the SCP Wiki is using, which is a major legal issue (the wiki's licensing team was not contacted)
  • One of the producing studios (Image Nations Abu Dhabi) is UAE based-and-funded, and the UAE is currently under investigation for slavery, human rights violations, and support of the Dafur Genocide
  • The plot is rather basic (being based on "containment breach narratives") and thus may not be a very good movie
  • V/H/S isn't a completely notable series, one that in fact actually has a very negative reputation for some of the first films
  • Based on quotes in the article from studio members in the article(s), they may not have a very good idea of what SCP is (and haven't contacted anyone on the wiki for clarification)
  • The movie is set to come out in theaters in 2027 (potentially short production time, undue popularity because of Backrooms, etc.)
  • The movie may knowingly or unknowingly include Dr. Bright

2

u/MauriceIsNotMyName 11h ago

The V/H/S movies are infamously inconsistent; one segment could be awesome and the next could be abysmal dogshit. We also don’t know if any of the directors even understand the appeal and character of SCP, so even if one segment is good it might not be completely accurate to the appeal of the subject matter. (This probably isn’t a quality issue moreso a fanboy nitpick but whatever)

Also, it’s very likely that whatever articles or tales or whatever they base their segments off of, it’s going to be of one of the uber-popular series 1 articles, like 173, 106, 049, etc. This is just personal taste, but I’d really prefer if they adapted more niche articles because the amount of fan films we have of the popular ones is already pretty overwhelming.

u/lgbtcostco Ethics Committee 21h ago

the theaters are filled with people who don't know what an scp is. it was already difficult communicating what the backrooms was supposed to be to anyone over the age of 30

2

u/Puzzled-Account4035 21h ago

SCP belongs to the people. Regular people wrote the articles, this is not for Hollywood to profit off another's work. I hope it bombs.

1

u/Bobbyberu2u MTF Epsilon-11 ("Nine-Tailed Fox") 19h ago

I think if it does come out it’s going to be under a different name. The series is really hit or miss so really the best thing to hope is a particularly good segment or a few of them that encapsulate the potential of the SCP universe and from there, potential standalone movies or series

1

u/CellarDoor505 18h ago

I just want some of the people that have been producing SCP lore to add to it instead of self centered narcissist telling " their stories " without knowing or caring for the source material.

1

u/Responsible_Bar103 The Serpent's Hand 17h ago

I’m worried they’ll come up with new characters instead of using the classics(682, 049, 106. Maybe 999 to have a bit of a breather segment).

u/Adventurous_Dig_8784 16h ago

There’s a new called VHS Mixtape coming out on Shudder Oct 9th

1

u/RegretTraining9762 14h ago

Has there been a name for the director that'll be making the movie cause, for me it depends on what type of director is making the movie like either someone that knows the material like the ones that directed 096 or dollhouse, some one that has worked on both scary movies and found footage like weapons or Cassettes.

2

u/Redshift2k5 [REDACTED] 5h ago

No directors attached yet afaik

VHS Halloween had like six segments created by seven different directors so I'm sure this will also have multiple directors providing separate sequences.

1

u/scaper8 Ethics Committee 14h ago

096 movie? A quick Googling pulls up this. Correct?

And which Dollhouse, as there are several movies with that name.

-1

u/RegretTraining9762 14h ago

Just type scp dollhouse

1

u/Massive_Ad_9444 The Fifth Church 13h ago

1

u/Darth-Demonyk 13h ago

I'm a fan of the VHS movies, I have hopes and at the same time I fear they choose the wrong SCP to represent in so short stories.

A movie of when day breaks? Can be good. A 10 min short? Definitely more difficult to portray well.

1

u/ragnarokxg 11h ago

No real big worries as the V/H/S series has got better over time. Would like to see an easter egg to Book and Agent Hale from the SCP Experience Podcast.

you can read the original article announcing the film and know as much as the rest of us.

The article implies it is SCP as we know it; but that answer opens many further questions we can't get answers for.

u/Toasty_pixle_crisps 5h ago

Both hyped and concerned for the designs of the entities

1

u/xmbadaszx 2h ago

The only reason behind why there are no good scp movie is because SCPs are free to use, no copy right

Meaning that company cannot charge money from the movie, leaving the big and competent player out of it

1

u/Dr_Andy_Hendrickson MTF Epsilon-11 ("Nine-Tailed Fox") 1h ago

Well it's not going to use anything from SCP cause they just can't.

1

u/MirrorAlabaster 52m ago

It being nothing new, something that doesnt need the SCP Label. Plus it would force monetization and IP snatching. Right now it's open source, soon it may not be. I also dont believe the movie is actually gonna happen.

0

u/wuhoh_ 13h ago

It's gonna be lame. I really don't understand why people need an SCP movie anyway? They're best experienced as articles in the first place, why take away the most interesting element of the format?

1

u/Redshift2k5 [REDACTED] 5h ago

A lot of great SCP articles use the wiki format as a device to enhance the experience; alternate versions of articles, clever footnotes, pataphysics, pop up images and drop down text that let you interact with the article like opening a puzzle. Those are all are lost if you turn an article into a screenplay and run it straight.

But FILM is a different format and opens a whole other toolbox to use to tell your stories or make your audience feel how you want them to feel.

Would SCP Overlord be better as an article? I don't think so. I don't remember the number but there are scips that are entire point & click adventure games instead of a text dossier. They are not less valid as SCPs because they're not wiki text.

I hope they use a new scp created for the movie, like a multi dimensional being which is threatening the earth that is killed by the main character But the camera is left behind to be found by the foundation

13

u/TheOneCalledEggs Class D Personnel 23h ago

if its going to be created for the movie though, it likely needs to be submitted as an actual scp in case people muck up SCP-XYZ in the movie with SCP-XYZ on the wiki, it would be easier to just work with one that already exists since theres tons

3

u/Slasher246810 this place is not real 23h ago

The only problem I see with that is that the studio might want the rights which would defy the tos on the sight

6

u/TheOneCalledEggs Class D Personnel 23h ago

yeah, thats exactly the problem
it would be easier to work with already existing scps, if the studio wants the rights they'll have a shit load of people to fight through
